Resident Evil 5. I was looking for something new and the game was only 6 bucks. The first mission in and I realized that this game had horrible controls that had to be designed by someone who's never played a game before.
Are the controls that different from RE4, which are perfectly fine controls?
I have'nt played the game in years but RE5's controls are clunky and generally designed for the game to be played with two players. The partner AI is brain dead as well.
I've played the game 2 or 3 times with an actual co-op buddy and it was lots of fun. I've only replayed a few scenarios with an AI partner but it was only to farm treasure and stuff like that, so I don't really know just how aggravating the AI is. But take my word for it, try co-op if you can. All the nuisance that will be left will be the extraordinarily imbecile plot.

Silent Hill: Book of Memories so far. I picked it up for $6 as I tried the demo and it seemed pretty fun. Problem is it is just such a repetitive grind that it stops being fun pretty quickly.

THIS year? I don't think that has happened yet...

I think the closest game I bought this year that could have disappointed me was The Stick of Truth, but even then I wasn't fully dreading the small stuff that could have annoyed me in the long run...

And, I'm already doubting the games I'm going to get this year would disappoint me one way or another, so there's that...

Overall, Elder Scrolls Online.

Not outright horrible, but not great either. And it was clearly in a late beta state when it was released. It is not a completed game.

Broken Age -
Or
"What happens if you sink all your money into Celebrities for them to speak 2 lines of text into a mikro."

Edit:
OP, seriously? I don't want to judge but you couldn't guess that "The Amazing Spider Man 2" was going to suck? There are barely any movie - games, that don't. Then again i thought Dragon Age 2 was going to be good, so i shouldn't talk.

I'm pretty sure the only game I've bought this year is Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, and I love that game. So no disappointment yet.

This year? Lords of Shadow 2 is disappointingly meh. Shame as the original was damn good.

Otherwise the only new game i bought this year that was hyped was Titanfall but i ignored the hype and was left satisfied.

Sadly Payday 2, I bought it during the sale. Just way too repetitive, and the constant pushing to buy the DLCs got on my nerves. Lots of waiting around for drills to drill or rides to show up, lots of bag throwing, too much ammo scarcity and bulletsponge enemies for me.

Battlefield 4 as well, despite all the time I've put into it. The game's vehicle and weapon balance (especially the freaking AWS) issues and the decreased focus on Rush is an unfortunate thing that could be fixed by future DLCs or patches, but the game's infamous 'netcode' issue just absolutely kills whatever strategy and skill you can put into the game. Too much getting shot through corners and covers, too much waiting for DICE to make a patch that's probably hard coded into the game. It's a shame too, because I have little doubt that if the game's 'netcode' was fixed, it would easily be the snappiest, most competitive shooter for a while.
I love Payday 2 but it's a chore to solo.

BF4 is just terrible still, and disappoints me greatly, BC2 was my fave shooter last gen by a long way, and then BF3 was decent but disappointing, then 4 is outright unfinished 6 months later. By the decreased focus on Rush I assume you mean the fact most of the maps are garbage for Rush, with shitty little choke points and no good alternate paths through. Conquest is okay, but the new modes don't appeal.

So far I haven't bought a disappointing game this year.

In fact, the last disappointing game I bought was Timeshift, in 2007. (Forevermore known as Timeshit)

Don't pre-order, read reviews, and you will never have to be disappointed.

Then again, the only games I've bought this year are Minecraft, Outlast, Titanfall, Space Engineers and Garry's Mod.

I would probably say South Park: The stick of truth. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed the game, and I appreciated the humour, but I found the game to be far too short and for me there was not enough replay value. By half way through the game I had completed most of the sidequests without even trying and I don't like that the maximum you can level up to is 15. When I am playing an RPG I like to grind to the highest level I possibly can, so I was left a little unsatisfied by it all.

I do mean most of the maps are garbage for Rush. I can just pick up every map pick out a really bad point on the map that's awfully slanted for or against one team. (Like Guilin Peaks Rush, where one in every three games there would be a guy who would glitch inside the mountain and kill all defenders while being invulnerable to damage.)

I'd argue Rush wasn't that great in BF3 either, but at least we had something. Grand Bazaar, Damavand Peak and Operation Metro (sort of) were designed around Rush, but they were horrible Conquest maps. And, well, BF4 wanted to move its core gameplay to Conquest, and Conquest prefers spread out maps to linear ones that Rush is based on.

However, I really like Obliteration, no matter how much people don't play the objective.

I have to agree with this. I'm by no means saying it was bad, I enjoyed my time with it, but the various graphical bugs I kept encountering and the total lack of replayability (I went back and started a new game as a thief class just to get an achievement I had missed earlier and almost found it a chore to get even to that point) just make it my biggest regret this year.

Only notable game I bought this year was Infamous Second Son.

It was alright. Its a pretty fun game to dick around with although it didn't blow me away like Infamous 2 did.

EDIT: Turns out I also bought Ni No Kuni in March.

Yeah... that would have to be the most disappointing game I bought this year.

I haven't even gotten to the part where the White Witch wraths and I'm already exhausted by its gameplay and difficulty curve.

Castle Story

This one may not be finished, but it is extremely disappointing in its current state. I can barely place down blocks correctly, the interface is clunky, and the AI derps out WAY to much. The entire game feels like a pre-alpha. Maybe it is just the Mac release of the game.

Sonic Adventure. What a pile of garbage.

As for games that were actually released this year, Our Darker Purpose. I'm a huge fan of The Binding of Isaac so I was looking forward to this but the game is just so damn slow. Every room feels like a war of attrition because your fire rate is so slow and the enemies generally take a lot of hits before they die. I wasn't expecting the gameplay to be exactly the same as Isaac but I was at least thinking it would have the same snappy pacing. Mind you I have no one to blame but myself for not doing the research before I bought it. Even so, I was left disappointed.

Thief. I am a stealth fan so I thought that I was going to be in for some fun. It was so dull that I barley got through the first non-tutorial mission. At least it taught me to not preorder anymore.

Broken age was also a little disappointing. Not in the same way though.

I just found all the maps to either be far too open for Rush or have these ridiculous, bullshit choke points that were just meat grinders, with the only alternatives being a low visibility hillside perpetually watchedby point and click adventurists.

3 had some okay maps, Damavand Peak was decent to attack but a pain to defend in my experience. Operation Metro was just a meat grinder. BF4 does get conquest maps right iot's just a shame it's so easily spoiled by having like 10 snipers on your team doing fuck all most of the match.

Rush was at it's best in Bad Company 2 if you ask me.

As in 2014? I've bought MGSV:GZ and Second Son for PS4. It's been a slow year so far. Last year? Dark Souls. I fucking hate that game. Aside from the bullshit tactics in difficulty which people do nothing but praise (The sun?), the story was pretty much not their and supposed to be guessed by the player. I'm all for mysteries not being solved, but if the story is nothing but that, there is no reason for me to continue playing a game I have no idea where I'm going, or why.

I've mostly been buying older games, filling out my PS3 library of things I've wanted to play at some point, and recently got a X360 to catch up on the exclusives I missed on there.

Thief, Farcry 3 and Bioshock Infinite would have to be my choices. None of them were horrible, but just didn't live up to what they could have been.

Guess I got some sort of AAA burnout, so I'd say this is likely to be the first time since the N64 that consoles are going to be my main gaming focus
