Ive been away from the genre for pretty much the last generation. IE the last I?ve played was I think Killzone: Shadow Fall on PS4 and Wolfenstein: TNO (yet to finish) on PC.

Kind of in the mood to see what I?ve been missing if anything; more interested in technically accurate shooters in regards to ballistics, weapon recoil, sound, enemy hit responses, etc. I know there?s Arma 3 or whatever the latest is but that?s too sim-heavy to even be fun imo.

The last games that really impressed me in these regards were Crysis on PC and Killzone 2/3 on PS3 (yeah I was mostly disappointed by Shadow Fall other than visually). Kind of curious about Far Cry 5 but not really keen an yet another massive open world full of icons as I?m still playing RDR2. Speaking of, I?ve tried the 1st person mode and it?s kinda neat (especially seeing the gun smoke while reloading a shotgun) but to me it was never truly designed with 1st person in mind, and I love the added character detail of 3rd person.

So having said that, any recommendations from the well-versed gamers in this genre is much appreciated!

Well, if you liked doom 2016, next month, doom eternal comes out, and it's looking pretty good. More emphasis on different weapons requiring different weapons/tactics, and more exploration/wall climbing.

I've recently played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. They've really upped their game when it comes to their facial expressions, Farah and Captain Price look really realistic. The campaign has some very cool and interesting missions, multiplayer is fun as always.

Titanfall 2 supposedly has an amazing campaign, haven't got around to it yet but worth checking out.

It's looking to be a masterpiece from what I hear.

PC Gamer - "Fast, brutal, and metal as hell, this is the most gleefully manic FPS since 2011's Bulletstorm."
Gamespot - "Doom Eternal's Combat Is Absolute Chaos, And It's Awesome"
IGN - "A ballet performed with bullets, blood, and blasted body parts."
Time - "the Most Pure Form of Doom Ever Made"
CNN-"Blood, guts, gore and fun"

Kinda curious about the new MW too actually. Looks like a pretty robust and well optimized engine. Also to clarify when I mentioned forgetting about DOOM 2016, I was implying it was just that: forgettable. So while Eternal sounds like an improvement, I?m really leaning towards something more tactical and grounded, or at least somewhat immersive. There was another game a while back that although mp-focused and set in an open world seemed to be really close to what I?m looking for. Just remembered it, called Escape From Tarkov. Apparently it has server issues but looks like it?s in some playable form now at least.

Well from a technical perspective, the Sniper Elite games always raised the bar in terms of physics and demand on your individual abilities. That said, if you don't like sniping - or more accurately, you like to also do things that aren't sniping sometimes - this game may wear thin for you.

Arma 3 is also pretty up there, but its from 2012 (ish? going by memory), so a lot of the more modern updates to gameplay aren't there for you. The depth of play is pretty nuts, with very accurate physics and a wide choose-your-own-murder-adventure path to achieving most missions.

That said, both really suffer from the slow-burn issue. Both games, from what I remember, absolutely have sequences or situations that can develop that are action packed, but for the most part being a sniper is dull. You kit up, walk your ass out there, and wait. That's not to say the games are boring, I certainly found plenty of fun in both, but if you play missions back to back with level of DOOM 2016 you could be forgiven for confusing them for walking simulators that suddenly get really REALLY real for a brief period. Think the berenstain bears "TAKE THE SHOT" joke from Gamegrumps.

I liked Far Cry 5 a lot. One of the few ubisoft games I actually completed. Shooting, exploring, driving; it's all great. Even in it's quiter moments with the lush nature giving the game room to breathe it's awesome. Mission objectives have a surprising amount of variety ranging from stunt car recreations to aerial dogfights in single engine propellor planes to the usual base clearing. But none of it is really padded and the game don't overstays it's welcome. The story is surprisingly fun too. If it had dynamic weather and more impressive particle effects it would have been my favorite shooter.

Doom 2016 is awesome but really non-stop, hectic action. Game kinda feels like you're a hamster in a wheel. But really well designed I thought the way they escalated the action with new weapons and baddies then mixing it up was brilliant. The difficulty curve felt really natural in this game which is something other developers should take notice of.

Haven't played the latest Call of Duty as I don't like the series but from what I've seen the SP campaign in the latest just looks like the same, short, 'cinematic' on-rails shooter in a game people buy only for the MP anyway.

I don't think you'll find any game where guns have a more visceral punch, gruesome impact, realistic animations and impressive particle effects in such disturbing detail than Red Dead 2 though. Really no other developer could ever put in those amount of resources.

Yeah, I played through all those games and they're awesome. The long distance sniping and X-ray kill cam is when the game truly shines. The age old question ''can I hit him in the nuts from here?'' never gets old. xD

The latest is probably the best as they also improved the pistol and automatic weapon in the game even if it's still really mediocre as a traditional third person shooter. But that's not really what the game is about anyway. It's all about stealth and lining up shots.

The Hitman games would also be great recommendations if you like the more stealth approach, even if they are even less of a shooter.

Back to Escape From Tarkov, [https://escapefromtarkov.gamepedia.com/How_to_Play_Guide_for_Escape_from_Tarkov] this is sounding really, really close to what I?m looking for. Maybe not quite so much sim and it?s disappointing there?s no single player (which would effectively eliminate the server issues!), but the survival aspect and attention to detail on gunplay and movement sounds exceptional. For instance, mouse wheel to increase/decrease movement speed is so simple yet rare in games. Plus the melee weapon single tap to take out, double tap to use is a nice touch.

I?m considering trying the beta out maybe this weekend, and will report back with some first impressions.
