Mother Out Tonight on Wii U Virtual Console as Earthbound Beginnings

In a mind blowing surprise announcement, Nintendo has revealed that Mother, now Earthbound Beginnings, is finally coming to the West - TONIGHT.

Every year, my mother encouraged us to go through our toys, pick out what we didn't play with, and donate them. "They may be old to you," she'd say, in all of her infinite wisdom. "But they'll be new toys for another little boy or girl."

Today, Nintendo is giving those in the West a new-old toy: Earthbound Beginnings, aka the original Mother, will be coming to the Wii U Virtual Console tonight at 6pm PST, 9pm EDT. The release was announced as a surprise kick off to the Nintendo World Championships event, mere days before the Nintendo presentation at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles.

Mother was originally released in 1989 for the Famicom, Japan's NES equivalent, and today marks the first time the title has made its way to North America.

"Hello, everyone overseas. I am Shigesato Itoi. Today I have some somewhat happy news for you." Itoi, the Earthbound series creator, continued "This is a work that had never been released overseas despite being created long before Earthbound, but it will now be released in both the Americas and Europe under the title Earthbound Beginnings. It will be released as a Wii U Virtual Console Game."

The decision was made to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the SNES version of Earthbound, which was actually Mother 2.

If you missed the announcement video, you can watch it below.

Fans on Twitter have responded in a huge way. "Earthbound Beginnings for the WiiU Virtual Console tonight? Better grab a parka when you pass away, because Hell certainly is frosty as f..!" one user wrote. "Earthbound Beginnings has killed all of my excitement for watching the Nintendo World Championships. I just wanna play 8-bit Earthbound." another user chimed in.

So Nintendo decided to kill any chance of anyone beating them at E3 before it even started. Ouch for everyone else.

This basically guarantees Mother 3 getting a US release, there is no other reason for them to do this, right?

Had to look outside to ensure the sky was still intact. Or will that only change if Mother 3 is released to the West?

I'm not a huge fan of the Mother series, but I still chalk this up as good news. Have fun!

Hey, hey, hey. You can't play your best hand at the start of the game. You wait until the end, then lay down the trump card.

Unless Square wants to deliver a FF7 remake. But I suspect they got drunk and forgot all about that.

Soon, the triforce of Earthbound would be completed... As for right now, let the countdown continue...

I'm not a huge Earthbound/Mother fan, but Mr. Itoi's closing comments left me a bit misty-eyed.

So...does this mean more Japan-only Nintendo games will be seeing international releases? Mother 3 would be great for the fans. As for me, I'm hoping for Star Fox 2.

God damn it, Nintendo. I'm trying to hold out on buying a Wii U until the new Zelda game comes out.

Nintendo: People in the west have been begging for Mother for ages. We've got this E3 in the bag!
Square-Enix: We're finally doing a FF7 remake!
Capcom: So we figured we'd put out that Megaman Legends 3 game after all.
Valve: We finally learned how to count to three!
Nintendo: ...fuck.

....I know that Mother is kinda a big deal and all, but...Have to admit, a port of a NES game made over 20 years ago.
I know Nitendo sells Nostalgia by the truckload, but I dunno, I don't think this is nearly as good as some people are making it out to be.
Hell, I'd imagine anyone who really wanted to play it would have already have emulated it :/

They announced it like nothing in between 2 events, 2 days before e3. How would you even consider that being their trump card?

I'll edit that now, sorry ^^;

I'm glad Nintendo finally released a version of Mother in the US. Only took more than a quarter century, but hey, they eventually got around to it.

I do wish they'd have released it for the 3DS Virtual Console as well (Along with Earthbound.) I would be happy to pay them good money to play it on a device I already own instead of never paying them for a device I have no desire to buy. I really hope if/when they release Mother 3 some day, it won't be Wii U-only
as well.

Star Fox 2 was never released, period.

And according to Wikipedia, it probably never will, as there are legal disputes in between Nintendo and the devs, Argonaut Software. Who've been defunct since 2004. So, its stuck in limbo, in addition to being an old game that goes against modern canon that was mostly recycled for Star Fox 64 anyway.

Oh whoops, I had a brain fart and forgot it wasn't released at all. Derp. I guess I was thinking of that nearly finished version that's been circulating around the internet for years.

Who cares? Mother 3 is the one that everybody has been clamoring for all these years. Mother 3 is the one in the running for best and most emotional story in an rpg. Mother 1 is actually kind of a crap game with a tedious amount of random encounters. Plus, Earthbound was more of a remake of Mother 1 than anything, had the same characters and everything.

Was anybody even asking for a port of Mother 1?
