Motion sickness with Portal?

Maybe its just me but I feel nauseated after playing this for more than 10 minutes or so. The same goes for Half Life 2. I can play things like Team Fortress 2 and Quake Live for hours and feel nothing but pure frag goodness. Anyone else have this problem?

...just me?...

Probably not just you, but I've never had that problem. Then again, I never get motion sickness, so I'm probably not a usefull statistic.

interesting...Have you watched Cloverfield? If so, did you get sick from the way it was shot?
I forget, is there a bob when you walk in those games? Like, does the camera move up and down a little with each step? If there is, that could be the problem.

There is no bob, and never seen Cloverfield.
I think its when you go in the portal a certain way and you do sort of a flip motion.

Yeah, games like this can trigger it in me, but usually only when it's really late and I'm already tired or unwell, since that means I'm already predisposed to feeling dizzy. The perspective changes and rotating camera can be enough to set off motion sickness in me.

Honestly, I'm unwell right now, and just watching a fight scene on TV where the camera is moving around a lot has been enough to make me feel a tad dizzy. Then again, I have a huge TV, which doesn't help. Maybe moving further away from the screen might help?

I don't, but I got both my parents to try Portal, and they said they got a little dizzy after a few minutes. Maybe some people are more susceptible to disorientation? Or maybe it's just because my parents aren't used to navigating through 3 dimensional space in the first person. (It took them about a minute to get the hang of "looking" with the mouse, and even then they still ran into walls or the edges of doorways.)

After playing it a few hours straight into the wee hours of the morning and flipping through a few portals at once I did get a bit motion sick, I took it as normal as I can't watch anything like Cloverfield.

I've heard of people playing Portal and getting motion sick, but I've never heard of anyone playing Half-Life 2 and getting sick of it. Interesting. Maybe your mind is getting blasted with the "Realism" of Half-Life 2 and refusing to accept the experience. As for Portal, try watching some people play Mirror's Edge and see if you can follow what's happening. If not, you probably aren't used to constantly-changing first-person views (beyond the usually "Move-Mouse-Left-Or-Right" movements in FPSs).

Never got it from Portal. I do get motion sickness from the Lego games for some reason though.

Nope. This is actually a suprisingly common phenomenon with Source games; My sister actually can't play HL:2 because of it. Its usually HL2 that does it to people if they'll get motion sick from the engine, but Portal's not that rare either.

What helps some people is to go into the settings and widen the perspective angle to see 90 degrees instead of the usual 75. I think those numbers are right...
Just find the slider and make the number go big.

Go into the options and set the field of view to the highest number possible (90 I think). If that's still not working, look up how to change it manually in the config files to something higher.

I've had the same problem, but 90 degrees worked fine for me. For some reason the Source engine uses a different FOV to most other games. Seems to have gone in Portal 2 though.
