aaaand here come the army of Sony fanboys claiming it wouldn't have been cut if it was left as a PS3 exclusive...

Well come on... if they WANTED to at least they could fit it on a PS3 blu-ray. I own both systems and I still resent the XBOX for only using a DVD. Multi-disc games are pretty lame and something I grew out of with the PS2. Going back to that just seems like a step backwards.

"This is NEXT-GEN!"
"But you still have to switch the disks?"
"Ya."
"But it's next-gen?"
"Ya!"
/facepalm

I love me my Playstation.

That's what I thought when I read the article. If that were the case though, what was stopping them from having it span multiple DVDs for the 360 version?
It already is going to be on multiple DVDs. I am guessing they just want to keep it down to 2 or 3 instead of maybe 5 or 6.

Havan forbid they compressed 9 discs to 4 and used 30GB on the HDD......

My immediate concern is whether or not the evil specter of censorship was involved here.
what kind of zoos have YOU been to?
I'm tempted to exploit an opening like that, but the mods might not appreciate it. :)

I was referring to what might have been caught he didn't mention there, rather than what he did.

I'm being very good in this thread, I was tempted to comment on how I noticed the mounds having been cut given how flat chested lightning is for an anime babe. But I was good and didn't... ooops err... well I almost did I mean. :)
Ahh I see, that makes a little more sense. Zoos are nice places. Mounds and boobs is a logical link to make. Maybe the polygongs and giggle-physics would have been too much content.

The problem with this story, and the assumptions people are making, is that they never specifically mention at what development stage this content was dropped...this stuff might have never even reached concept art - we don't know, but already we have people mentioning DLC (which Square have already announced they aren't releasing) and / or complaining it would have stayed if the game were PS3 exclusive.

Far more likely is the fact that the game has already been in development for 5+ years and they needed to get the game out to make a profit, most of this stuff doesn't sound very necessary, and in a game as linear as this, the sort of content mentioned sounds like the sort of stuff that should be axed.

As for the whole "Could have been a whole game"...that's a very broad statement - an equivalent to a Final Fantasy game, to a generic 6 hour FPS?

Isn't the game like 120 hours long?

That's enough for me.

Any more and it would just be ridiculous.

Hopefully, part of the cut content will dispel the rumors I've heard about the story not going anywhere for 20 hours.

I hope they get the chance to release some of it as DLC, I for one would like to see some of it in action

from FFIV to FFXII I've probably put at least 700 hours into the series myself (which makes me feel like I might have a problem).
Only 700 hours? I usually put in around 200 hours per installment. On VII and X, I put in at least 300.

You don't have a problem, trust me.
I was bring pretty conservative. I somehow put 170 into FFX, played FFIV and FFVI multiple times back in the old days, FFIX at least twice...

Royalties for anything over three discs. For the record the content was already running on the PS3 when it was cut. Furthermore one needs to look at this admission in the context of the complaint that there are no towns/shops for the first five hours or so, or if there are they feel a bit lifeless.

Oh dear god. Either we are going to get a FFXIII-2 or DLC.
If they put in a whole new game in DLC I'd be pretty damn happy.

Tired of DLC being utterly half assed and expensive.

I'm actually genuinely happy they're cutting off gameplay that doesn't necessarily have to be there. I found that while I played through Final Fantasy XII I grew bored of the game because they added just a bit too much additional content. The thing was, it wouldn't be a problem (what with it being optional and all) but given the amount of money you get through the regular story, you're characters will be severely under-powered if you don't do a lot of the side-missions. Maybe I was just bad at the game, but that's how I felt. If content is but because of system limitations, that sucks. But if content is cut because it was filler, all the power to them.
I didn't like FFXII because it was either:
a) Easy enemy that, with the correct combination of gambits (I think that was what they were called), you didn't even have to press buttons as they attacked, healed et al without input
b) A hugely overpowered boss that ended up in myself spamming the limit breaks, changing one character and hoping that I got recharges for the other characters whilst limit-breaking the new character - then repeat with other reserve characters

Major balance issues in my opinion coupled with a seemingly random 'now you must go to the other side of the map for some reason' story.

OT: I'd rather have the additional content in, as was the case with the other games this stuff was optional and a well designed game wouldn't become monotonous (As I felt FFXII did). Seems like we have well and truly entered the age of the DLC, I shall weep for humanity.

Agreed, although there is some cause for concern regarding DLC since Square only said there would be no DLC for the japanese version. And for people like me who can't get DLC, it's a big deal.

Let me get this straight: You'd rather have unnecessary content left in the game, because it would make the game less monotonous? From what I've gathered the additional content isn't some minigame and it's likely not going to change the gameplay, it's filler they felt wasn't crucial to making the story arc complete. Now I'm inferring a lot there, but somehow I doubt this cut gameplay would do anything but add some extra hours of sameness to the game.

On the topic of XII, I don't think 'either' is the word you're looking for you mean 'for both of the following...' not 'either'. I didn't find either of those to be a problem for me, I just felt that the necessity to complete hunts etc. created a lot of filler. I didn't find the globetrotting all that annoying either, what with the teleport crystals littering the gameworld.

Dear god be DLC. NEVER make that mistake again!
It was so painful if you got the bad ending.

"I did all that... AND HE'S STILL DEAD?!"

Even worse if you got the good ones.

"They ruined the ending of FFX, GOD DAMN IT!!"

OT: It'll be back.

Sooo there are people that are willing to pay additional money for something that is already done and would have been in the game except it was too big? Here's what they can do- release it for free, and let people keep the content on the hard drive of their system. What other reason would there be to pay for it?

Personally, I'm not surprised. I wouldn't be surprised if all the FF games had a lot of content removed. Though I do expect the game to be multi-disk, like Lost Odyssey.

Kamikokuryou went on to detail some of the stuff Square Enix left out. One of the cut areas involved main character Lightning's home and included a park of some sort. Also cut was a secret base for Snow's resistance group Nora that was inside of a shop. Finally, Kamikokuryou revealed that amusement facility Nautilus Park included a zoo at one point, which was axed. They cut out the damn zoo! Some of this may be lost in translation as I have not played the game yet and the interview was done in Japanese. I would assume that there are many more areas Kamikokuryou did not cover.
I'm sorry, but I kind of had to laugh at this part. Resistance Groups? Zoos? Amusement Parks? Secret Bases? What exactly is this game about?!?!? That is a serious question.
