Movies that everyone you talk to seems to think are bad but you think are actually pretty great.

For me it was Waterworld(1995) with Kevin Costner- I guess that it cost a lot more than it should have, what with the accidental sinking of some of the scenery (was that a lie, or did that happen?), but it was what I wanted to see at the time, basically Mad Max, but on the ocean. Little to no brain power needed, and some cool visuals.
For me Waterworld was a good idea with poor execution as far as the script goes. The sets were awesome, the idea of Mad Max with pirates instead of motorcycle bandits was awesome, but I can't help but feel that it could have been realised better.

Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad film. I'd happily watch it if it's on TV.
Sure enough- 'actually pretty great' might be a stretch, I suppose, but I find it's a movie that got a lot of flak for not being that bad.

I liked The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Possibly because I haven't read the comics it's based on. I find it to be an entertaining flick; The acting is not too shabby, the special effects, while going into the Uncanny Valley at times, are decent and I quite like the story. (For whatever reason, I also think the Invisible Man looks a little bit like Adam Savage. Is that just me?)
Agreed, I really liked that movie, even if I never read the comics (I would read them, but the, er, maturity of it all turns me off a bit, not to mention what they apparently do to the Harry Potter books later in the series...). It's not perfect, but I still enjoyed it.

Also, I don't get why people rag on the third Pirates of the Caribbean movie, I thought it was a pretty good ending to the trilogy (at the time).

I don't know why, but I've always loved the 2006 The Wicker Man remake with Nicolas Cage. It's got nothing to do with the BEES or any other Cage-isms. It's all about the foreboding cultish atmosphere of the village, if the movie does one thing well it's that.
Spiderman 3. It's definitely cheesier than 1 and 2 but I really dug most of it.
X-men 3. Okay the fight choreography was arse and some of the story was a tad silly but it had some great moments and, well, Magneto is still awesome.

The Blair Witch Project. It's flawed as hell but I thought it had a creepy atmosphere, lack of artificiality and sense of honesty. Most of the people I know have had their appetite ruined by the slew of "found footage" horror films that have been released in the last decade, which have been much flashier than Blair Witch. They think the film is dull and lacking in scares.

But I don't think it's a film that is meant to startle you or scare you in the way many modern horror films do. It's just a bunch of people getting lost in the woods. And woods full of leafless trees are creepy.
I...can take it or leave it. And I'm a found footage nut :).

Fortunately it paved the way for legitimately brilliant Found Footage flicks, like Grave Encounters, The Borderlands, The Bay and similar.

Ah, I love the genre.

Several of my friends thought Collateral was boring, but I found it to be one of my favorite movies of all time.

Atmosphere, man - that movie had tons of it. And holy crap - Tom Cruise's training paid off - the action scenes were so damn good.

Oh, and by the way, if you wanted to feel old today - let me remind you that Collateral came out 11 years ago.

8mm, a wonderful Nicolas Cage film, that I love, but can't seem to find anyone who has even seen it, much less actually liked it. Also Van Helsing, for lots of cheezy reasons that just make me giggle, mostly that of the over the top Dracula, who was just hilarious.
I love both 8mm and Van Helsing... To me, they feel very underappreciated in the places I try to bring them up... (It doesn't count that my mom also loves the formal and my best friend loves the latter...)

OT: Besides those two movies, I've only met two person who actually liked A Series of Unfortunate Events with Jim Carrey... and one of them is right here in these here forums... (Also, does liking High School Musical count?)

Yeah, it really happened. caused the budget to almost double due to that blunder alone.

Also quoted because my own opinion builds on this... virtually all of Kevin Costner's filmography. Growing up I remember really enjoying Water World, and I downright LOVED The Postman. I had the movie poster on my wall, even. sure, now that I'm older I can look back and see how the premises were silly, but I still enjoyed the rides.

really, the only Kevin Costner movie that the internet complains about that I always agreed with them on was his Robin Hood adaption... got no excuses for that one.

Okay, these films aren't bad but they're films people I know have gone 'Ehhhhhh' about.

The Hunger Games films - these are far from bad films but some people just don't seem to pay attention. For example, in the cinema for the first one someone didn't even realise a neck snap is a real thing. In the latest film I heard someone deride a plane being shot down because they didn't pay attention during a previous scene with Beetee and Gale.

The Mummy (1999) - I love this film, it's so much fun but I constantly see and hear people say it's terrible! No, the third film is terrible, the first one is fantastic! I thought this film was well-liked but recently I've seen/heard people crap all over it.

Galaxy Quest - my former film student classmates (>.>) laughed in the not-nice way when I said I like this film. It's a fun film that lovingly parodies popular geekdom, especially a certain geekdom. Honestly -bleep- those -bleepers- anyway, they only had passion for their pretension.

The Dead or Alive film. It doesn't even get DOA right all of the time and it's missing so many awesome DOA things (I'm really not referring to the breasts) and it's not entirely coherent but it has the spirit of the series and that's why it's fun. They should've done a Rumble Roses movie.

Batman Forever for me. Batnipples and all included.

I honestly don't hate campy Batman and still enjoy Schumacher's Batman films a lot more then I do a Nolan film.

Roland Emmerich's late-90s Godzilla movie. Liked it then, like it now. Always had a thing for dinosaurs, and as much as I loved the old trashy Japanese films I have absolutely no problem with a reinterpretation of Godzilla as simply a big animal.

Feel free to crucify me, if you must.

Personally I feel it looks better, but Jonny Depp as Micheal Jackson Wonka was just painful.

For me the film is "Batman Forever", While not as hated as Batman and Robin (which is enjoyably bad), it's one of the few that had Batman try to get over his parents for once and Jim Carrey is just lots of fun as the Riddler. I'd much rather watch a fun Batman film than the Nolan "About as deep as a hallmark card" batman.

Heh, I knew someone wouldn't be able to pass by this thread without using it as a "Lemme just mention how much I hate overhyped Frozen" pedestal.

OT: I'll have to third Batman Forever; I have a lot of fun with it, it's the only non-60's Batman movie with the Riddler as a prominent villain and I like 90's Val Kilmer, what can I say.

People give a lot of flack to Insidious but I enjoyed the hell out of it. Same thing for the Saw franchise

Man of Steel I think everybody wanted this to be the Second Coming of the original Superman: The Movie. And that was a great movie...for the 70's. But I liked Snyder's thoughtful take on Superman. How Clark was a man in search of his identity early on. Who was he? Where did he come from? How should he handle his gifts? It was pretty well done. Yes, the Space Jesus analogies were too heavy-handed, the dialogue was clunky at times. But I enjoyed it. I thought Henry Cavill did a great job. Too bad he won't get a proper sequel.

Godzilla (2014) Godzilla's supposed to be a force of nature. His presence should be felt over a slow build up and cataclysmic events. And then when he finally arrives, he's unleashed. If you watch the first 1954 movie, that's pretty much the pace. The 2014 version followed that formula fairly faithfully. Sure the characters weren't that great, but I found Aaron-Taylor Johnson WAY less annoying than Matthew Broderick in the other American Godzilla movie.

Cloverfield I suspect I liked it for unintentional reasons. I've always watched monster movies to root for the monster. And never have I wanted more for the monster to completely obliterate the entire cast of self-absorbed, whiny, annoying characters. SPOILER ALERT: He does.

Avatar although I don't know that it really is universally hated, it is more that everything that hyped up gets a huge hatedom regardless.
The plot I can take or leave, it's not really bad as far as movie plots go. I don't mind though because watched it primarily for the awesome visuals. Call me shallow or whatever if you want. I can watch/read/play something with crap visuals if the other stuff is good and I can also enjoy things just because of the visuals.

Hammy supernatural action films like Underworld, League of Extraordinary Gentleman and Van Helsing. They are crap but they are fun crap.

Wait wait wait . Are you saying that there are real people who hate Starship Troopers ? Thats not possible ! Or are you talking about the whole series ? I do admit that the sequels are trash but the original is pure gold .

I'll go ahead and jump on the 'Man of Steel' bandwagon. I thought it did about a good of a job making a modern Superman movie as one could possibly do. Sure the plot had plenty of holes, but so did the comics in a lot of way. The acting was generally very good, phenomenal special effects and action sequences, and it genuinely made me excited to see future Superman villains being brought to the big screen (Metallo, Brainiac, Parasite, Luthor, Parasite, etc).
