If I were to theoretically sell my backwards compatible PS3 for a new Slim, would it be possible to transfer my save files and my PSN profile? Can i just sign in on a different PS3?

I'm having the EXACT same problem here, as my PS3 just died on me =\ doesn't your profile come with you if you exchange the hardrive?

You can easily transfer almost all your information over to a new PS3. Just copy your save data onto a USB drive and copy it back to your new PS3. However, some data can't be copied, so that you will need tor restart. To transfer your PSN when you set up a profile on your new PS3 select Sign Up for PSN and choose "Use an already registered account" (or something like that). Just put in the required info and you will have all your previous things.

Are there memory cards or profile recovery? Im not sure how it works on PSN, but I know XBL lets you recover' your account to other 360's assuming you know the email and password you used.

You, my fellow Escapee, are a future life-saver (If my PS3 ever happens to fail, god forbid.) Bookmarked this if I ever need it.

Well if it is the same as the 360 hard drive, you can recover your gamertag on another 360 but all the save files will not transfer

But with the PS3, you can easily transfer most save files with a USB, but I'm not 100% sure about recovering a PSN account.

EDIT: Here is a pretty straightforward set of instructions. Taken from: http://www.avforums.com/forums/ps3-playstation-network-help-setup/873879-transferring-all-my-stuff-new-ps3.html

Yes, you can use the backup Utility (System Setting --> Backup Utility) to backup your machine to a USB drive. However since you will be restoring the data to a different PS3 (again using the Backup Utilitly, but obviously this time choosing Restore ) you will need to reassociate the actual PSN accounts with the relevant local PS3 account (I hope you know the email addy and password details for all of your PSN accounts ). To do this, log in to the local account, go to the PS Network icon and when signing up to the PSN choose 'existing account', and enter the relevant log in details for the PSN account you want to use for that local account. Do this for each of your PSN accounts.

If you have content like Singstar songs you will need to contact Sony (check for contact details in the Singstar section in the PS3 Games sub-forum) as it is tied to the console (I beleive) and they will credit you with the purchase price so that you can re-download it.

You can also manually copy just the save data and media files to an external USB drive if you want.

yes you can easily backup your stuff to a usb drive, however i'm going to say get an external drive to do it, do a full backup and then restore it on the new one. before you sell your old one, wipe it of everything so someone can't reuse your info and such

however when you do upgrade the hard drive in it, like i did, the back up is a life saver. it takes a couple hours to do but it's worth it in the end

what do you keep tho is

all your settings
all your friends
all your trophies (tho sync them before you do it, just in case)
all your dlc (i kept my rockband tracks)
all your save games
all your game installs

i love my new 300 gig drive in my ps3
