MSNBC Wants More Sex (and Wangs) In Games

From Hot Coffee to male full frontal nudity [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/81009-Fox-News-Commentator-Apologizes-for-Mass-Effect-Comments-Following-Blowback] in GTA IV's DLC, MSNBC's Winda Benedetti says Nay! Bring on the Sex! Bring on the Penises!

Boobs sell games. As much as we might want to cross our arms and 'harrumph' at how childish the idea is, there are fewer guaranteed ways to get hormone-fueled teenagers (and hormone-fueled adults) to look at a game than putting a buxom, barely-clothed babe on the cover. From Tomb Raider and Dead or Alive to Fear Effect and yes, Onechanbara: Bikini Samurai Squad [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/5791-Review-Onechanbara-Bikini-Samurai-Squad], it's simply a fact of the industry.

So why, Benedetti wonders [http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29417313/], are people flipping their lids over GTA4's dingle-dangle? Why were people freaking out over a sliver of sideboob as two adults had consensual relations in Mass Effect?

[blockquote]My question then is this: Video games have been around for decades now. Decades. So when are they - and when are we - going to finally grow up?[/blockquote]

She raises a good point: approximately half the planet sees an Admiral Winky every day. Sexual intercourse is not only a time-honored favorite pastime, it's necessary for the survival of our species. "[A]dults in the real world have sex. Adults in movies have sex. So why shouldn't adult characters in video games get it on or, you know, appear in their computer-generated birthday suits?"

If Harry Potter can get on stage and show off his tallywhacker in a play, and Ivy Valentine can walk around about to burst out of her top, then why can't Kilik decide to show off his Hermann von Longschlongenstein? Why can't Kratos do the deed on-screen for once?

We've been saying this stuff for years, Winda. Glad you're on board with us - maybe this is indicative of the mainstream press easing up on the issue, and developers will listen? Or will pigs fly before Gordon Freeman changes his mind on what being the "Free Man" really means?

Is this a hoax? Because I'm seriously safeguarding myself against the likelihood of absent common sense.

Well, that link proves it. There is an intelligent commentator on games in the ranks of mainstream news!

Indeed! I'm somewhat amazed!

That said, I think the reason games haven't "Grown up" as she puts it is -because- she's the first intelligence mainstream news commentor...well, ever! I mean, Mass Effect took a step in that direction, and what does it get as way of reaction? "Se"xbox from the "Burn this flith - someone think of the children" crowd.

Have you clicked the link? She's a game writer, even if it's just for MSNBC - a game writer nonetheless. This doesn't represent mainstream media.

I think we'll still have to wait for some time until we get this kind of statement from senior commentors and news anchors. Because the only way you can say stupid things about video games like Se*xbox and the like is by not playing games yourself. People who have never really played video games seem to think of all video games as a technically upgraded version of Pac Man, or Doom, maybe, that only kids have fun at. And then they see any reference to sex thrown in it and go mad. I think that's quite understandable within certain boundaries - although these boundaries can be found in some people's job descriptions [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DidNotDoTheResearch])

The generation mainstream news media cares most about is the generation that mostly don't play video games and are completely unfamiliar with them. And that's exactly the people making mainstream media as well. That will change over time, and so will the coverage of video games.

John you couldn't have picked a better picture when dealing with an article about the mature depiction of sex in videogames than DOA? Seriously, that was your only option?
No, but I think it certainly fits the CURRENT image of sex in videogames just fine :p

Sexuality can be as acceptably portrayed in video games as much as any other form of entertinment, and should. Everyone who disagrees needs to get over themselves and grow up.

A porn simulator. How very depressing.
DOA isn't a porn simulator, it's a damn C**ktease simulator. There's no actual sex or nudity, just alot of almost nudity and suggestive 'games'.

You want a Porn Simulator, go to Japan. Sexy Beach 3, I believe it's called.

So a softcore porn simulator. The difference is largely negligible in terms of its maturirty, just the depths of its perversion.
Just as even the simplest of games can entertain, so too can the simplest of human interests (the basest, some decry). Sure, the industry is rife with immature treatment of the subject, but even if you pack the shelves with titles that deal with sex in a sophisticated, mature manner, there will still be the need for the immature. Just take a look at the movie industry - some of the top movies, rated as intended for adults, aren't what I'd call sophisticated or mature.

Demonizing the existing gaming environment won't get what we're looking for released, plus it's denying human nature, so better to save the effort to more positive ends.

Grow up? Really? There are ways to have sex and nudity in entertainment and have it be respectfully and meaningfully done.. But hardly anyone does that! It's more of a ,"Hey, don't forget to add the sex scene to attract those people that like it!" not a, "Hey, people in a similar situation would have sex at this point, so let's have a scene that's more about the emotions involved and less about showing breasts and butts."

So until game developers themselves grow up and can go about including sex in a mature manner, don't force it into games. Give games something to stand out from the other forms of entertainment, even if it's as simple as "We refrain from having senseless sex scenes that have no effect on character development or the plot."

Well to be honest I don't care if I never see a single penis in a game. The problem with people is that they still attach games to children. And children shouldn't be exposed to this sort of thing. Its why people get up and arms about violence. Children shouldn't be exposed to it. They don't realize that gaming has now covers a much larger spectrum of society than just kids. Its for adults that haven't grown up yet, or just wanna have fun.
The same can be pointed out to comics. Back in the early 80s-90s when they put the ban on violence in comics, because they still assumed that comics were for kids. You can read stuff these days, from sin city to sandman, its all for an adult market. (Because kids don't have money, lol.)
I guess what i'm trying to say is cut the general public some slack. When they realize that (some) games are for adults, thats when we will all grow up.

P.s. Bring on the DOA girls!

How often do we see willies flopping around in Hollywood movies or on TV? Not often unless it's a porno.
There is one in Fight Club if only for a second.

As for the topic, I belive that nudity should be more preavlent but games started out as entertainment for kids and a lot of close minded people believe it should stay that way. Think about it. Pong the first video game ever was designed for kids. People will one day see video games as more than a kids medium but as to how long it will be is anyone's guess.
