Museum of Modern Art Acquires Fourteen Games

"Are video games art?" asks MoMA. "They sure are, but they are also design."

Pac Man and thirteen other titles, ranging from Tetris to Portal and EVE Online, have been acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, as part of its new category of artworks. Nor is that where MoMA intends to stop; it has forty other titles on its wish list, including veterans like Donkey Kong, fan favorite Grim Fandango, and relative newcomer Minecraft, among others.

MoMA chose a design approach for its latest venture. "The games are selected as outstanding examples of interactive design," says the Museum in its announcement, "one of the most important and oft-discussed expressions of contemporary design creativity." It doesn't want games that just look good or play well; it wants games with elegant code, and ones which take the player's behaviour into account. Which is why, says MoMA, some of the games on its list aren't necessarily the ones video game historians would consider easy picks.

Some of the games on display will be playable, others not, depending on length of gameplay and sometimes also fragility of format. If you were hoping to play Dwarf Fortress at MoMA, prepare yourself for disappointment; that's something more likely to be on demo display. Passage, on the other hand, and games like it will be playable in their entirety.

MoMA's Architecture and Design team will have the initial selection on display in the Philip Johnson Galleries by March 2013. If you want to know more about the exhibit and how the games MoMA picked were chosen, have a look at MoMA's official announcement. The lack of Okami, Ico, and Shadow of the Colossus on that list makes me sad. Those game are some of the few games in my opinion that truly deserves to be considered art. Shadow of the Colossus especially for it's vast open world and details. Weird to see Katamari Damacy on their, but at the same time I can sorta understand it being there.

Portal IS overrated. I liked it and i can still say that. It was pretty good. But people bang on about it like it's the second coming of christ. It was a fun game, but it wasn't amazing.

Okay i'm going to divert Portal talk to say this:
Eve Online is not a game, STOP SAYING ITS A GAME.
JUST WHY DO YOU EVEN THINK THAT EVE ONLINE DESERVES TO BE PAIRED WITH PAC-MAN? IT'S NOT ART.

Fucking excellent. It's always good to see our medium get more and more recognition as an artform. Makes me very happy indeed. ;D

Wow, congratulations to Tarn for Dwarf Fortress being in the very first selection. I'm (not) surprised that Doom didn't make the list, as it has arguably been the most influential game that brought about the First Person Shooter genre, which dominates the game market to this day. Then again, I suppose demons, satanic symbology and other hellspawn are not very kid-friendly museum material.

I was also just thinking that Shadow of the Colossus should be on that list.

Okami and SotC were among 80 games [http://americanart.si.edu/exhibitions/archive/2012/games/featuredgames/] honored in a Smithsonian exhibit [http://americanart.si.edu/exhibitions/archive/2012/games/] that ended in September. Besides, the 14 MoMA games are 'just the start'.

That makes me happy to say the least because those are some of the most artistic games out there I believe.

I'm personally happy to see that an organization finally recognizes Vib Ribbon, if for nothing than being artsy. Put your own music CD in and change the game play, use rhythm...it's part of the small group of games that paved the way for games like Rock Band, Band/Guitar Hero.

I couldn't agree more, Neronium! It's nice to see that many museums (especially art museums) are finally putting video games into their exhibits. To me, there is no real definition as to what is considered artistic, it's whatever you make of it. This can be anything from minimalism to a full blown oil painting.

Reading this thread I feel that most people missed that this is celebrating outstanding game design rather than artistic merit

It is overrated. its a fine game, altrough nto for everyone. but it has spawned fanboyism of the highest degree. people will go around spewing "your shit if you dont like portal" tryign to boost its image. It isnt some miracle, and it isnt a bad game. but that doesnt mean you have to try to make it a miracle.

ALso im very surprised Eve-Online got into the museum. was that the only MMO? i guess those "best mmo" rewards werent for nothing then.

Eve Online is not a game, STOP SAYING ITS A GAME.

oh its a game all right. as much as excel with graphics can be a game. but itsn ot a game that is created. you create the game yourself, its a game of psychology. community is the gameengine. everything else is optional.

I think they should have included Shadow of the Colossus or Okami. Those two games were the most beautiful games I have ever played.

Oh, Maker. Let's not turn this into a rally to see which game is the most overrated. Seriously.

OT: Is it sad that I don't know half the games on that list? I think so too.
Anyway, I nominate Fez.
