Mutant League Football Gets Back in The Game on Kickstarter

Mutant League Football may be getting back in the game with the help of Kickstarter and gamers like you.

Mutant League Football may return for a 2015 season if the revival can raise enough cash this month on Kickstarter. [http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mendheim/mutant-football-league?ref=recently_launched] The team looking to revive the Genesis sports-fantasy franchise is looking for $750,000 to help them bring their modern take on the cult classic Genesis game to iOS, Android and XBLA.

The Mutant League games mixed traditional simulation-style sports gameplay with violent mechanics like field hazards, trick plays, and killing players to make them drop the ball. In addition to critical acclaim in its own time, the series inspired a cartoon, comic, and line of toys.

Led by Michael Mandheim, creator and lead designer of the original Mutant League games, the team behind Mutant Football League - yes, they switched the name around - aims to recapture feel of the original, both in style and substance: "The game features will include the use of brutal enforcer players, field obstacles, hazards, player weapons and dirty trick plays (where throwing a bomb is literally throwing a bomb)," reads Kickstarter. "All of this will be packaged as a hilarious parody of all that we hold sacred and dear (football, star athletes, sports networks, videogames, mega-corporations, sports licensing and merchandising)." The game will include both single-player season and head-to-head multiplayer modes.

Though the current project is mostly focused on creating a game for mobile platforms, stretch goals could bring MFL to PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox One and PS4, though some of them would require as much as $3 million to activate. Other stretch goals include everything from the usual clothes, artwork and exclusive backer-only plays, to more exotic swag like the "knuckle duster bottle opener."

According to Kickstarter, the team plans to finish the game in "14 to 18 months or die trying." Assuming they get the funding and pull it off, Mutant Football League would be ready in early 2015.

This is one I'll possibly get if it comes out, but I don't plan on kickstarting. Sorry, it was a fun novelty but not really something I've been desperate to relive.

Wasn't the original Mutant League banned (or prohibited) after Games Workshop called foul on them infringing on Blood Bowl?

If that is the case, I would expect Games Workshop are preparing their winged legal monkeys to go after the chap behind the new one.

I loved LOVED this game even though I'm not all that much into sports or football itself.

But again another no PC target release. :/

Not sure! I've honestly never heard of this series before, but I got immediate Blood Bowl vibes.
