My god... I think I'm starting to hate Batman.

Not the character himself, just the concept. Every time the topic comes up on favorite superheroes and I go to my 2 favorites, Flash and Superman, I get weird looks and a bunch of "What about Batman?"'s. In part his popularity is due to the Dark Knight of course (he's pretty much a meme at this point), but I guess it's also the way most people I know choose to fantasize in today's world. These people tend to dream about things that are a long shot but could technically happen should the stars align, and Batman appeals to that. Could someone with billions in disposable income, an Olympian physique, a genius IQ and an obsession with justice that borders on a mental disorder fight crime as a vigilante with awesome super-gadgets? Yes. Will that ever happen? Hell no. But it's the possibility that it COULD conceivably happen that creates the niggling, minuscule but still present notion in your mind that "Ya know, I bet I could be/see the real-life Batman!" It's also part of the reason realism in games is so prevalent right now and sci-fi movies are fairly popular even outside the nerd crowd. There's nothing wrong with this train of thought, and I'm not saying people think like this all the time or that I never think like this, just that the from my observations, this type of fantasy appeals to more people I tend to hang around with.

The other side of the spectrum is people like me, who fantasize about the absurd and impossible things that could never happen because the universe doesn't work that way. They are the people who wonder what it would be like to launch a kamehameha wave at their neighbors, or fly, or move objects with their mind or whatever. We know it's not possible, but we like to get wrapped up in it and just wonder what the world would be like if we could do those things (probably blown up in 3 seconds, but eh). It's almost child-like, but I hate to use that phrase because it makes us sound immature, which isn't true, at least not because of that.

Anyway, like I said, I'm only posting about this because lately a lot of people will not shut up about Batman any time a superhero discussion comes up and I don't immediately say how cool he is. Yea, Batman is cool, but the Flash can run faster than LIGHT, and Superman can punch-out a physical god! That just seems way more cool to me, alright?! I can't be the only one who thinks like this!

That said, for those wondering, I'm not a big Marvel fan. Pretty much the Avengers and their main members are the only Marvel heroes I like.

So, what about you guys? Everyone has a favorite superhero. Even if it's Batman, I wanna know why said hero appeals to you more than any other.

Superman's my favorite superhero, and let me tell you, it's not an easy fandom to be a part of. Everyone and their mother seems to hate the character, viewing him as boring or overpowered. I tend to think the reason for this is that most people who don't actively follow the character's history have no frame of reference except the 1978 movie and the 2005 reboot, both of which represent a fairly outdated vision of the Man of Steel. Of course, that's a discussion for another day.

My appreciation for the character comes from his humanity and compassion. He was born on Krypton, sure, but he was raised right here in the heartland of the United States as the only son of a farming couple in Kansas. Given how deeply agriculture is ingrained in America's history and culture, it's not a stretch to say that growing up as cornfed farmboy imparted in Superman a rare humbleness and humanity that makes him even more human than many Earth-born people.

So what if he's from Krypton? He's one of us. And more than that, he's a living representation of what we can all become, an ideal for us to aspire to.

Yes, batman has been blown way out of proportion by Frank Miller and the Internet. Dont get me wrong, I like batman, but geez he is unstoppable now a days. It is lame.

Also Scott Pilgrim > batman IMO.

Hello semantics:

My favorite superheroes are the Wally West Flash and Spider-man for their willingness to crack jokes.

My favorite hero would be batman and he outranks the flash and spidey on my favorite things list. Oh, and I loved batman before the Dark Knight came out, all the way back to my childhood thanks to the DCAU and the fact that it is technically possible for somebody to become him in real life. Also because he can beat pretty much anybody if he has enough prep time.

P.S. I am finding it hilarious that people are hating on batman solely for his popularity.

I like Iron Man's technology = super powers approach. Also, I find Deadpool absolutely hilarious. Iron Man is pretty funny at times, but nowhere near as funny as Deadpool.

Actually the reason I like Batman so much is that he's totally not a superhero... he's just a dude that fights really well and has lots of weapons :) He shouldn't be made to be seen as unstoppable, though... he's human and mortal and stuff.

Lost me at "popularity from Dark Knight". Its not that. Its the animated show that made him huge. The one where Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) is Joker.

My favorite superheroes?

The X-Men.

Because they're walking metaphors for gay rights.

Kind of how Superman is a walking metaphor for the influx of Jewish immigrants to the United States in the early 1900s.

While I don't know if he can legitimately be called a superhero, but my favorite is the Punisher (specifically the MAX punisher). I like that he's not the "Let them see the errors of their way in prison' type of (anti)hero. And I like jut how brutal he can be towards certain types of people, read 'The Slavers' to see just how he feels about human traffickers.

For the record I've like Batman because I grew up with The Animated Series. And the more I think about it, I like the villains more than Batman, I like how they all hate each other, but at the same time, can't exist without each other.

Batman was the best in Justice League Unlimited, hands down.

I like Batman because he's more detective than just bashing his way out of stuff. Not that he doesn't do that too, but he does it much less than other superheroes. And he's just your non-super dude who faced ...well a lot from demons to a vampire to sorcerers. And he keeps on going. And I assume it's not easy to compete with Superman who can take a trip around the world and stop crime. Like...all of it. He somehow does that.

I also liked him before Nolan. I didn't even watch all of Batman Begins because it bored me.

Batman, to me, always has more character than, say, Wonder Woman or Superman.

But, on the other hand, the Bat-family has always seemed much more interesting than Batman. Ditsy batgirls Barbara or Stephanie (or Misfit, for that matter) are amusing/cute, Cassandra Cain was made of win (before they fucked her up), Nightwing is pretty good, and Huntress is awesome. Tim Drake not bad, Damian, eh.

Barbara Gordon as Oracle I find a bit meh, but that's because she hangs out with much cooler people like Huntress and the Black Canary, who overshadow her.

To me, Superman isn't good as a character, but he is good as someone the interesting characters work off...like the straight man in a comedy, not their to be funny, but to make the humour work. Oracle likewise.
