My GOD, the Heroes of Newerth community is so bad. SO bad. But why?

It's general knowledge that the HoN community fucking sucks. So badly. But why?

It's pretty obvious they're all elitist as hell. I've played LoL for about 10 months, but recently I got kind of tired of how slow it was and wanted something a bit more visceral and fast paced. I had HoN kicking around on my PC since it went free to play, but the first few games I had played the community (among many other things) alienated the hell out of me and made me never want to go back. I trolled them about how LoL is better (like a true internet douchebag) and promptly left, never looking back. But now I've returned with steely resolve. I've done my research, picked an easy character to play and I'm running even or plus KDR in nearly every game. But my god, the community. They are the most hateful, elitist, "HAERDCOER" bunch of fucktards I have ever met.

You miss a jump on a stunned target when you're halfway down the lane, you're a retard.

You get ganked by three people out of the jungle under your turret and die, you're a retard.

If your lanemate is killed and you didn't magically pull a stun or slow out of your ass to help them out, you're a retard.

Hell, I got called a retard for GETTING A TRIPLE KILL.

You play a certain character a certain way? You're a retard.

Oh, you didn't come across the map in an instant to help me out when I was overextended and got ganked? You're a retard!

And the worst part is they don't even care. No one bothers to try and help you figure out the game, give you tips or let you try and figure out the fucking retarded UI. They just call you a noob and kick you. HoN players are, for the most part, the biggest bunch of poisonous, pathetic cock-chomps you will EVER have the misfortune of playing with.

Don't get me wrong, I like the game. It's fast and fun and punishing. You need your wits about you the entire time. The balance? Yeah it's pretty awful. The shop? It's a god damn mess. But despite its flaws it's still a fun game to get into. The community is a massive barrier to that fun. They wail about how LoL is so much more popular, but they screech and rage and drive any new players away from their precious hardcore game. And then where do you think those new players go? To League of Legends, where the matchmaking is far better and you will be put with other people roughly of your level and experience every time.

Oh yes, League of Legends has a pretty awful, ungrateful community too, but they don't froth at the mouth with hardcore rage when you fail a single last hit on a creep in lane.

Last game of Hon I played I got kicked. I could not figure out why. I was farming well, I had 1 kill and 1 death, my lanemate had died a few times but I had done everything I could to help him out. Then I was just kicked, for no reason. They all just suddenly called me a noob and kicked me. I don't understand it. And besides that, you want your community to grow HoN players? Then fucking suck it up and deal with the scrubs, OR just make some better damn matchmaking. But these are hardcore gamers we're dealing with. Leather jacket wearing 'bad-asses' who smirk at your cartoony graphics and slower pace, who rub their skills in your face and call you a retard for not buying a ward.

But that's just competitive gaming I guess.

EDIT:
I just found this article. It's pretty spot on :)

Moba games. If there was ever a need to remove a chat option, the Moba genre would be the main thing to remove.

The problem with MMOs, especially ones like this, is that after a while you really stop getting new playeres except as a tiny trickle. Those who stuck with the game are generally working towards specific, high-end goals, and getting some "newb" involved can oftentimes be a massive annoyance, wasting time if nothing else.

That's an increasing problem with MMOs is that the developers rarely bother to consider how to keep things working when the initial player rush is over, and the realities of community evolution and 99% of the players focusing on the endgame/high end play, wind up chasing off the new players who get involved, sometimes only a few months after a game is released given the rate at which experienced gamers can master the basics of an MMO now.

Games like League Of Legends, which are pretty much 100% competitive online experiences, tend to be the worst, because there isn't much game there for people to learn from.

^Please stop calling Dota games MMOs. 5v5 instances != "Massively" Multiplayer.

Anyway, you'll find good people in the community and you'll find bad people.

Sticks and stones.

They are MMOs, because the community of players is absolutly huge and they all share the same matchmaking. The battles might be 5 vs 5 or whatever, but those 10 people come from a pool of tens, or hundreds of thousands of players, maybe even a few million if some hype is to be believed. That's an MMO by any definition... it's just an MMO that consists entirely of a 5 vs. 5 arena queue (of a sort) without any kind of real persistant world structure behind it.

My guess is that, because MOBA games are generally thought of as being skill based they attract the worst scrubby players that refuse to admit to their own make mistakes because they're convinced that they're good and everyone else is bad. I actually feel safe in assuming that's relevant for the majority of players I play, I've played a lot of matches on MOBAs (albeit I haven't played HoN) and that's the feeling I always get. I can easily see and admit to my own mistakes, identifying and acknowledging them is the only way to become better, but 9/10 players will do retarded shit on their own and then blame the nearest possible person. It's like AoE blame, I could be in the jungle killing some creeps when the top lane tower dives and dies. I'll get blamed just because I'm the closest to him.

My advice is pretty simple; ignore them. Think about what you're doing instead, dying isn't that bad if you learn something from it, it doesn't matter if it's the simplest thing like not standing still in lane when Pudge is missing, or a more situational thing like not 1v1'ing when the opponent in lane has a Wriggle's and you don't. Over time you get better, like any game; just ignore the community.

I have not played HoN but I have played LoL. Not sure if HoN has a ignore feature but that is what makes LoL bearable. Just ignore anyone that bothers you in the least and enjoy the game. If HoN doesn't have that than I don't know what to say.

There is a certain way to play certain character, sadly. Unlike LoL where role is simplified to AP/AD and you simply spam all your skills; HoN usually need a more complex role fulfilling.

I play both HoN and LoL and I do agree that new learner in LoL seems more acceptable than HoN. My guess is because LoL doesn't have (or less obvious) skill level meter like HoN does with PSR/MMR numbers. This makes HoN more supcitible when it comes to player raging because there is something to compare; while LoL, players just accept loses as a bad game and move on without permanently scarring their numbers.

As for teaching newbies, MOBA game generally have steep learning curve and it isn't helping much when HoN's AI bot practice is still in development. This force you to practice with other players in a real match but problem is what's practice for you can be someone else's hardest effort to win.

And there is an ignore chat command: /ic

I haven't played HoN, but I've played a bit of League of Legends and it is meanest gaming community I have experienced, including WoW. Of all genres I've played (including MMO, FPS, RTS) it seems like the MOBA/DoTA games are the worst.

It's not 100% of players, but the highest percentage I've seen behave rudely, insult the other team, insult their own team, and perhaps most importantly, I don't think I've ever experienced someone being helpful.

I love the HoN community. The nastiest of the nasties accumulate in one place, and seeing a "white knight" player is about as rare as seeing a pornstar who's a virgin.

Once you learn the game, you too will be big shit talking your opponents and driving the shitstains who ruin your game to tears.

Edit: Oh, if you get kicked, it sucks balls, but if you remember one person's name, you can potentially have everyone reported (you only need to report one person). Yes, these dick moves happen, but it is more rare than you think.

I can understand why people rage since if you end up with one bad person that could be the difference between having a chance in the game and loosing it completely. It's even worse when people join the game and refuses to help with anything and is just running around playing their own little game against creeps and feeding the enemy.

But generally speaking MOBA games have shitty communities and therefor I always try to play with friends.

It's - it's like the POLAR OPPOSITE of Myst Online!

(In Myst Online, there's very little reliance on other players except for three puzzles, so you end up with a community that's out hunting for n00bs to help out (!) or just relaxing and socializing in the main cavern.)

I think I've found the two extremes of the sliding scale of game community pleasantness.

When I first started playing HoN, I kept joining the "Noobs Only" games thinking that was the way to learn the game. Took me a while to realise those were actually traps so the pros can farm rating points. Once I learnt to join non-rated matches, the players in those were alright.

Does that mean every game over Xbox Live is an MMO?

I have only played LoL but it has a pretty terrible community for the most part. Best way to deal with it is to ignore them and then friend the people who are pretty nice untill you get a list of players that are not complete and utter ****s. Then play with them, or other friends who have the game if possible.

In an unrelated note, I have only played LoL but I have heard of the others although they have been described as LoL clones. What game actully started the genre?
