So, the last week or so, my Ps3 have started to make this wierd noice, it's coming from somewhere at the back or middle, it's not a loud fan, it sounds more like... uhm... a disc going around and getting cut? I dunno, the point is that it sounds like that even without a disc in the console. I've tried using a small vacuum to clean the vents, and tried using that self-cleaning thing, but still that sound...

Anyway, today, I noticed that it's way worse, CoD Black Ops have been freezing up alot lately, and today Uncharted 2 refused to start. so I figured that the Ps3 is dying, I wish, I took a look at these discs, at first sight it looks dirty, however taking a closer look it actually looks like the discs have been grinded to hell. I'm still not 100% sure it's that way, and I hope not becasue that would mean that I've lost 120 euro plus what it costs to fix the ps3 or get a new console. And of course I have no proof left that I've bought these games.

And how to clean bluray discs...?

Anyway, so if I send it in for repairs, should I expect that I get a new console? Because in that case I should change back to the original hard drive because I upgraded to 500GB since 80 wasn't enough...

So what am I asking for? Well, help? Any info you can provide, perhaps tips on how to fix this, anything I can do! And if you need more info to help, just ask :p

I'm a huge Ps3 fanboys, I love the Playstation, but it's getting hard when the Ps3 is killing itself and destroying my games in the process which are quite expensive....

Thanks in advance!

I've never really had any problems with my PS3, so I'm not the person to go to, but I did a bit of looking around, and:

The tech guy there seems to think that it's because of the lens. Anyway, there are a couple of disassembly guides on the internet, but be very careful. Screw up and you'll have to pay far more than the $140 or so dollars you'd have to shell out to get Sony to fix this by now.
By the way, I don't suppose you're warranty is still valid? That'll save you a lot of trouble.

My brother's original Xbox 360 had the three red rings of death, he sent it back and got a whole new one, I don't know if Sony is that nice but you might be surprised. And is your PS3 a slim or original?

My slim can occasionally get pretty loud when the disc's in and you can hear it turning, but not without I don't think.

Can't help you there.

Let this be a lesson to always save receipts on everything. And lessons are the most valuable things in life. That and money, which you're going to lose when you send your stuff in for repairs. It's up to you to decide what wealth you enjoy the most

Harr harr, thanks for the smile^^ Came a few right after though :/ However I dunno, I'll just send all that crap over to Sony and they can deal with it, I got better things to do than getting stressed over malfunctioning hardware :p

If you send it back, back up your hdd and replace it. You won't get the same ps3 back, they'll send you a refurbished one, and they'll want the original hdd when you send it back. Xbox hdd works like a memory card so they can just pop it into the new system, but you'll have to reformat your 500gig and will lose everything. Also so to your PSN account and deactivate the system game and video support from your account name. It sounds like your drive is just dying, if a disk cleaner and a can of air doesn't work could just be dying like you suspect.

Well if it's making strange noises and grinding your discs that's probably natures way of telling you it's time to buy a new one. A similar thing happened to my ps2 and it's now completely fucked.
