I imagine there has to be more to this than just a simple fan film...
I mean, I can't imagine Jeri Ryan and Michael Jai White wasting their time for nothing, and I can't imagine anyone throwing away the money it would have cost to film this and hire them if there wasn't some purpose whether it be promotional for a film or game.

We'll find out sooner or later, but I agree with someone else.
Sometimes I think cheesy is just simply more FUN. Whats wrong with having it be a supernatural tournament with "magical fighters" duking it out on an astral plane or whatever? Last year's biggest film was about giant blue people fighting futuristic human mercenaries over a giant Life TREE..
Its the same argument I consistently make about why Transformers is such a let down as a film... because instead of just taking the existing story which arguably was BETTER than anything Michael Bay could write, and film giant 'old-school style' transformers that looked like their recognizable blocky selves, he elected to come up with some wacky nerd fetishist film with giant moving mountains of indistinguishable scrap metal whizzing all over the place to the point that the ONLY one that was defined enough to recognize and appreciate was freaking BUMBLEBEE.

Imagine if he took Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles but made the turtles regular people who dress up in turtle-esque costumes in order to fight crime on the tough streets of Phoenix, Arizona? Sure you could make it look gritty with badass violence but IT WOULD NOT BE NINJA TURTLES!

I'd rather watch a straight up remake with the ol goofy costumes and laughable plot than this "modern" garbage where reptile is a circus freak who eats heads in his refrigerator and scorpion's "tail" comes out of his arse...

Hm. Cool.

So long as it has some kick-ass fight sequences, which it will, combined with the Mortal Kombat music, then I'm happy.

Ok too me the surgeon going crazy and beating up cage like that... its like a call of duty nerd rage quitting so bad he becomes a psychopath and that instantly makes him an awesome fighter with super strength somehow. Why dont we see more of those? so much rage

I've heard quite a few people ***** about this trailer and it's probably time for some mutual admissions: 90% of videogame plots are too silly to make live action. I don't know what it is, but stuff like this (sorcery, science fiction, gods, alternate dimensions, etc) works fine as games, comics, anime, cartoons, and even books, but for some reason when we see it translated into live action we think "This is so friggin' stupid" in an uncanny valley-esque fashion. This is probably the closest MK has been to being good in live action as the whole bloody aspect would fit the series. Remember another series that benefited from a darker, more grounded approach? Twisted Metal. Plus I'll give them points for creativity by making Scorpion the main character (Liu Kang is friggin' boring)

Ok That is actually a valid arguement, I can respect that (DAMN YOU MICHAEL BAY).
Let me say this though, it isnt like they havent tried that already, i liked the first film myself, that is probably going to be as close to what everyone else wants this to be as it's ever going to get. You have the camp outfits, you have the corny 'mystical' outworld setting, you even have fatalities and scorpion using a living spear for pete's sake. They did all that stuff and did it well. Then they made the second film which had more name-dropping and pathetic cameos and none of the coolness (i cant find the word for it) of the first film.
Thats TWO movies with the stuff the nay-sayers want so badly from this one, if that wasnt enough, you had a crappy Live action TV series (MK Conquest) with a prologue story with some of your favourite characters in it. To top it off, there was a cartoon series that used the first movie's events as a back story, it had the most relevance to the franchise than all of them put together. Was it favourably recieved? No.
Ed Boon has pulled nearly everything out of his arse in terms of plot and he said himself he was happy with the first film. Why would they want to do another one which would be damn near identical?

So my question would be, what WOULD the film be like if it was made in the way everyone else wants? Without using too many of the ideas from the first film....

It could work! But for some reason, images of Legend of Chun-Li tend to come to mind...

I am not excited at all.

The characters look nothing like their Video Game predecessors. I find that annoting. And the first movie suuuuuuucked.

Anticipation: 7%
Well you complain about the way they look, and then say the first movie sucked. In the first movie, they looked like they did in the games. Maybe changing course from something that sucks is a good idea.
