Name a dying game series/franchise and a way to save it

It's not a franchise so much as a subgenre defined by two or three franchises, but I think the next generation would be an excellent time to drop a new World War II shooter on the market. One that actually utilizes the improved processing power to actually portray battles with a more proper sense of scale, and doesn't screw around with historically accurate and realistic portrayals of the war and the experiences of the common soldier. World at War was a glimmer of hope in that regard, in its disposal of the "good war" narrative, and I'd like to see more of that. There are plenty of stories left to tell for a thoughtfully- and respectfully-written and designed game -- the Chinese front, the conflict in the Balkans, the Polish and French resistance, the Nisei units, hell even the seizure and liberation of Buchenwald (one of the most stunning and amazing stories that's never told).

JRPG's in general (barring tacticals).

How to fix? Just start putting more out there, and don't bother with fancy graphics or byzantine control/combat systems.

Just go cel-shaded (like in the Tales Series, where it's sprites and other tricks) to avoid blowing budgets on fancy graphics that nobody cares about (like in FF13).

Sure, graphics are nice, but not if the rest of the game is lackluster.

Also, stick with one of two combat styles: 1) RPG hack/slash (KOTOR, Kingdom Hearts), 2) traditional turn based (PS1 era JRPGs).

Meanwhile, to further beat a necrosis-ridden horse...BRING BACK LEGEND OF DRAGOON!!!!

And while I'm at it, Breath of Fire too...

********************

Also...beat em ups...like Double Dragon (I know there was the HD remix, but stay with me....). DmC and Ninja Gaiden try to fill this niche, but it isn't the same.

You can still do a decent brawler outside of sandbox, without 2D. The Bouncer had potential, but needed more content.

Honestly, follow the formula of games like Jade Empire, which I think cracked what brawlers should be in the modern age (with a few RPG elements, no less!).

So Jade Empire 2 (which I think would help BW's PR as well).

Also...Shenmue 3...yeah...

Metroid: since 2002, Nintendo has left us with a cliff hanger right after reviving it from an 8 year hiatus. They only released interquels that while being damn good (except Other M) did nothing to address the fact that Samus just became an outlaw in the eyes of at least a few high ranking Galactic Federation brass. And Ninty had the gall to announce Metroid Dread and then cancel it while ignoring 6 years of fans pleading for a new 2D Metroid. Sakamoto supposedly did not like the Prime games very much(thanks in part to Japan's dislike of FPSs, maybe), but they are loved over were Metroid actually has a stronger market. Plus they need to drop all the story telling they've been trying to do. Prime's scan logs and Fusion's monologues were enough to flesh out the story without breaking the sense of isolation that makes Metroid great and atmospheric. Even the Prime series slowly got guilty of this by 3 and Other M script should have been thrown out the second Samus met up with another team.

Either they need to make Dread, expand on the outlaw plot they basically sent up at the end of Fusion, or give Retro or another good American Developer free reign on another 3D Metroid.

Jak and Daxter: I loved the first game. It had a extremely interesting, magical world to build upon. The eco puzzles and abilities were great and could have gotten better with sequels. The series could have gotten even deeper with the Zelda style exploration. Instead they had to fused GTA into it. Gone are the colored eco powers, the great for all ages story, and the magical land to explore; here's some scifi guns, an anti-hero, and another post-apocalyptic wasteland for you. While I did like Jak 2&3 and they did still have some of the magic of the first game, they just felt like they don't belong with The Precursor Legacy. Naughty Dog needs to dust this series if they still own the rights and either retcon it right at the end of the first game(unlikely, but look at the Highlander Films it can be done and make at least one good sequel) or bring back the magic of the first game( no gta style missions, blue red yellow eco powers/puzzles, less emphasis on guns and Dark/Light Jak). Though a sequel regardless of direction would be nice.

Final Fantasy: Pretty much everything above posters have said. If Square must make the main character a bishonen, make him likeable sorta like Zidane, not an asshat like every male lead since. And, bring back the explorable world map of 1-9. Realistic graphics is not and excuse that it wouldn't work. Even with a decade of 3D models the party still stands in place or makes no effort to avoid the massive easily telegraphed attacks, and that's still accepted by fans. We still got the feeling of immersion whether our character was towering over most cities on the map or when they stood emotionless while the giant magitech demon charged up his mana beam. Square is too obsessed with eye candy to make a decent game since 12 was in production. Not to hate on the other composers but the soundtracks have been mostly bland since Uematsu's departure, and Sakaguchi's might have been the signal that Final Fantasy 10 really was the final one. Maybe they should look at their past for inspiration and make another FF9 style throwback to get the team's creative juices flowing again for the next game after that.

Halo CE is completely iconic, being the original of course, so an anniversary edition is justified. But the only real accomplishment that 2 had, although it was admittedly a big one, was multiplayer honestly. And I don't think that's worth an anniversary edition especially now that the multiplayer we have even in just 3 is far superior to 2.

That would sound as if 343 is too stuck in the past. This is a new trilogy by new developers. We should treat it as such.

Fine with me, but as long as he isn't wearing that terrible looking Arbiter armor from the 2nd and 3rd games. It looked like he was wearing old-fashioned boiler-plates glued together.
The thing about Halo 2 is that it was very, very good. I agree it might be sticking to the past a bit, but the fact is lots of people, including me, would like to play it again with the Anniversary coating. I would certainly want it more than Halo 5. Also I personally would like to see the multiplayer brought back as it was, not like with Halo CEA. It would need dedicated servers and stuff, but oh well, I can dream.

And I like the Arbiter armour. Though I don't mind what he wears, I just want to see him again.

I know of many dead/dying half-life(2) mods, such as The Specialists or The Hidden.

The best way to revive these would be to just play them.
The Specialists is a unique case because it's been dying for the past 4 years. The role-play scene has kept it 'alive' for awhile, but that's pretty much gone by now.
But I really don't want it to die, the deaht-matching or role-playing scene, because its a quite unique game with a shitload of custom models that I'm still discovering knew ones every time I look through the models list.
That, and the ability to wall jump or free run allows RP to be fun when nothing is happening.

I miss it so.

Release Final Fantasy VII (or VI) with the graphics of the latest FF game.

Because damn, the latest games are anything but FF. At least the Tales series remains true to its roots.
How is Final Fantasy VII true to the series' roots? That's the one where it started to head off down the path its on these days.

I'm going to be the odd one out and say that I'd rather them do anything than spend all their damn time recreating an old game that people can play for themselves without the need of better graphics. Nintendo already decided to go this route with Mario, I'd hate to see it happen with Final Fantasy. And I'll again be the odd one out and say that I find that XIII is not bad. In fact, I'd go as far to say it deserves a good 6.5/10, 7/10 on a good day. Simply because the combat in it was so much better than the other games. And I kind of like some of the characters(except Vanille, she annoys the living shit out of me). Not to mention, XV looks great and I'd say that's a much better direction, especially with Nomura handling it. Anyway, rant mode off.

OT: WoW could return to its former glory by making leveling fun again. Now it's just like bread. Yeah, it's alright, and it'll sustain you for a while, but you just want the meat, which is the end game content. Meaning you speed your way through all these interesting lands that could off some fun experience, but now it's just pointless. The only thing they try to make interesting is end game which really limits the possibilities of experience. You can either A: raid, or B: PvP. Or secret option C: griefing.

And Ultima, where EA could erase Pagan and Ascension from the Ultima timeline and actually let the people do their damn jobs to remake those. Or hell, even just patch and update Pagan to fill in the shit that was missing would at least make it redeemable, but they'd have to recreate Ascension from the ground up if they wanted it to be worth a damn. Yeah, it won't be as great as old Ultima, but it will be better than what it became. And hell, maybe they can fix the horribly broken story too. They've made an IOS Ultima game anyway and keep the MMO going, it's clearly still a cash cow they're willing to milk.

Spyro the Dragon:

Give Insomniac the rights again. They don't even need to make a new game. I just want them to have the rights so nobody else will make a Spyro game.

Give Crash Bandicoot the same treatment.

Is Final Fantasy dying? I mean, yeah, Fabula Nova Crystallis hasn't been working out too well for them so far (I don't know how Type-0 is). But XV looks fuckin' amazing. And I think people are excited for A Realm Reborn? Not sure.

Also, they've said they aren't gonna think about doing other HD rereleases unless X/X-2 does well. But I think FFVII would need a lot more than just a graphical update.

Silent Hill should just be given back to a Japanese developer. Those people understand horror like the West just can't. Unless we're talking about Capcom, don't give it to Capcom.
But Capcom could be the savior that Silent Hill desperately needs! Imagine how much more imposing Pyramid Head and/or obvious Pyramid Head expy du jour could be if, instead of a sword, he used a rocket launcher! They could even tie it in with the back story of the protagonist, whose wife would have been killed by a rocket launcher held by a sexy demon nurse!

More seriously, yeah, Silent Hill could really do with some more Japanese influence. Either that, or at least stick with one developer; it seems like whenever a developer from the West starts to get a pretty good grip on the series' central ideas, (like Climax with Shattered Memories) it just gets thrown to another, less experienced one.

OT: Dead Space. I know this'll come off as a little odd after vouching for Silent Hill but... just stop. You had your trilogy, you had your oddly decent Wii rail shooter. The games' quality has been on the decline for a while now. Give Isaac a rest. Maybe pick it up with a different protagonist and better horror elements in a few years.

Banjo-Kazooie.

Rare seem to have no interest to revitalize the series seeing as how they're being pressured by Microsoft to create only crappy Kinect games. Sell the rights back to Nintendo, let Retro Studios handle a new game. They did wonderfully with Donkey Kong Country, and I feel they can work similar magic creating a next-gen 3D platformer; the likes of which haven't been seen in a good, long while.

While they're at it, Rare should sell the rights of the Conker games as well. That way they can focus all their assets toward creating their Microsoft-funded Kinect games that nobody wants.

I'm sure there are a good amount of fans that would love to see a new Conker game, too.
Most of the people that made those games in that era recently left Rare where they made a new company that's making a Banjo spiritual sequel. So hopes up for that.

Sonic. Just stop with the aero tricks and precision jumps and make it about speed 100%.

release VI with better graphics and you could just print money. It is widely accepted as the best FF in terms of story and had one of the better combat systems, also keffka the mad clown is the best villain in the series.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

Nintendo is great but their systems are not really a good place for lovecraft style horror exclusives (main stream horror like zombies sure but not lovecraft style)
HD re-release on steam and ps3 THEN MAKE THE DAMN SEQUEL!

seriously put that thing on steam horror bitches love steam lol (if amnesia and Alan wake 's sales aren't enough proof then -shrug-)

for those of you who dont know of eternal darkness think of it as amnesia's lesser known big brother

basically take amnesia add weapons in limited number locked camera angles (ala resident evil) and turn the mind f*** dial to 11

Doom. I think it would be really cool for the Doom series to go back to it's roots of an over the top action game with open maps that focus on a bit more problem solving, maybe even go to the 2.5 D with HD sprites, though that might be too niche.

Silent Hill: Stop retreading EVERY theme and most of the plot points of the first 2 games. You have a horror setting where NOTHING has to make sense. This many games in, the rules and lore are surprisingly almost nonexistent yet rather than just going nuts with it and making the most terrifying and outrageous spectacle of mindblasting horror ever...they don't.

Whatever they people in charge THINK Silent Hill should be about, and that fans would want, is obviously not working as they want it to.

Siren: Make more games?

Fatal Frame: Make more games, that aren't buggy Wii exclusives?

Mother: Rely on the snails pace of the fan made Mother 4, because its all you are going to get.

Mega Man: Rely on fan made games because Capcom doesn't make platformers anymore. Or give it to Wayforward.

Luminous Arc: Idk why LA3 was never localized, but I would make LA4 have even more fanservice than Dragon's Crown so it gets noticed. Apparently that has become the reason to localize games these days. Being an excellent TRPG series with fun characters isn't enough. Not that LA1 and 2 didn't have fan service.

Final Fantasy Tactics: More fanservice?

Dragon Quest: A fucking original idea?

Resident Evil: All Leon, all the time, and more fanservice?

Tenchu: Everyone forgetting the Wii game, and maybe making a NEW villian.

Metroid: Everyone forgetting Other M, and maybe a new EVERYTHING. Seriously they have a universe of fictional planets to create, an infinite number of alien races and xenoforms they could make. This series, like Silent Hill ranks up there amongst the top franchises with LIMITLESS potential. They are only limited by their imaginations, and I guess their's are somewhat lacking as we haven't seen much NEW in the series in many years. They even allow some bosses like the Nightmare and Phantoon to be recycled. Not to mention Ridley and the space pirates just won't die. If Nintendo can't see the potential they have, then someone else needs to make a franchise like Metroid with a different, preferably customizable, protagonist.

Or give it to Wayforward.

Shadow Hearts: Get the rights away from Aruze. Make a game. Profit.

while I don't know why it happened, the Oddworld series ought to be revived, I've looked into some of the stuff they were planning to release and it looked very interesting, and with today's OS specs, they could look even better

The Sly Cooper series:

Never, ever, ever, ever let Sanzaru touch the franchise again.

The Assassin's Creed series:

Scratch out half of the incredibly random and pointless additional content tossed into the series over the last two games. It really comes across as though Ubisoft simply writes down every little idea each designer has, and then never refines or removes any that are not working or are completely worthless.

Get rid of the stupid Farmville crafting and convoy management. Who pays for an Assassin's Creed game to have a tacked-on Facebook game? Nobody. Completely overhaul the stealth, combat, and free-running. Include manual aiming, a toggled crouch option, Arkham combat influence (or at least some other style of fun, polished combat), and provide your game with a more streamlined approach to platforming- it's the series' free-running controls that have ultimately made all of the other gameplay mechanics feel wooden and poorly-constructed compared to its competition.

Resident Evil: Get back a personality of your own, for christ sake.

RE4 is the only game in the series I actually enjoy, because the more survival horror orientated ones scare me shitless, but RE5 killed any kind of tension by forcing you to have a partner and Resident Evil 6 was the most embarassing game I have played in a long time. It was completely spineless and so desperate to jump on any bandwagon that it could find that it ended up making rookie mistakes that most first-time shooters don't even have. Hell, Operation Racoon City managed to do a better job, and I never thought I'd say a game should try to be more like ORC.

Also, and this is maybe the most important part, please stop trying to make us take the story seriously. Jill Sandwiches and Midget Napoleons are what set the series apart from all the other horror games --it gave them a camp 70's B-movie feel, but could still deliver the scares-- but you really expect me to give a shit about some woman's dead sister when I know nothing about her? I'm supposed to care about some dickhead called Jake who comes across as smug as Dante but without any of the charm? I should find Chris more likeable now that he's a stick-up-his-arse alpha dudebro? Or was I not supposed to notice any of this while everything was exploding...

I still haven't forgiven SE for screwing up FFXIV. They did a good job with FFXI. I would have expected that SE would have learned something. But instead they made the game actually worse. A Realm Reborn (version 2.0) I suppose to be the true FFXIV. A little bit too late.

And FFXV... we'll see. It looks pretty, but I am not getting a vibe from it yet.

That's a bit tricky. The original FF games, the first 2 or 3, were pretty basic. So then you have to wonder what exactly the roots are of FF. Instead I just see FFVI and FFVII as an improvement while maintaining the FF feeling or at least the feeling of a good JRPG.

I rather have a HD remake of FFVI or FFVII. Heck I still rather have a HD remake of FFVIII or FFIX than how FFXV is looking now. But when the game finally does get released, I might change my mind, though unlikely.

I don't quite understand what you mean. WoW has always been about the end game content. With Cataclysm at least, Blizzard made huge improvements to the world and the leveling. Everything from lvl 1 to 85 has changed, in a good way. Leveling was fun again.
