On topic, I like this thread. This is a major issue when RP'ing, because a name can make you remember a lot of things, and can conjure motivation in many ways. It also says a lot of the character. I tend to go for the beautiful approach, as I always do in life. Things I like in other languages, like Latin and Japanese. Exempli gratia, Shichiyou is "moon", in Japanese. Always loved the moon. It fills me with a magical sense. So as I think of the character, I smile in remembrance of the mood of him/her. Or Darth Eternum (eternity is "aeternum" in Latin) for my Sith character.
Then we have names I just steal because I associate them with characters I love, like <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/362.82757#1136699>Lethe and <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/362.82014#1107669>Ilyana from Fire Emblem.
Moving on, we also have <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/362.88129#1347952>Mira Savo. A name I felt sounded French, which I got from the KotOR name generator, and used for a character I like to RP. I have also used simply Higurashi, but added "<url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/362.72627?page=7#1066221>Stargazer" as a surname of sorts.
Further, we have Nanase, whose name I got from El Goonish Shive, an awesome comic. I love the character deeply. Got the sheet for that specific character somewhere deep in my vast, vast inbox. She is in the same RP as Ilyana, anyway.
Right, those are some of my RP characters I have come up with. The only MMO I really played was Runescape back in the olden days, and my account was my name backwards. Not so fancy. Later on, I made one of the name "Wyrmqueen". Very likeable.
Oh, almost forgot. Got one named <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/362.68543?page=2#682382>Ashlen too, who I should mention for the sheer epicness of it. Anyone who likes to read should read the Ratings War thread. Ratings War II is going on right now as well. Pure epic.
Okay, I am really going to stop now. I have a lot more characters, but I figure this will not be read anyway. Abayo.
For me it depends on the Genre,
If it is a Japanese Role Playing Game, I name the Female Protaginist Hitomi, and the Male, Mabe, My last name that means pearl in Japanese, if you want to pronounce it that way.
If it is a Western Role Playing Game, I name the Male protaginist Kevin, Which is my First name. The Female Protaganist I name Ashley, if there is one.

I tend to re-use names of old D&D characters, both my own and from people I've gamed with and lost touch with.
When coming up with an 'original' name I tend to lump a few sounds together that sound about "Right" for the tone of the race I'm making.
Faelyndyr for an Elf character and say... Kharzgrum for an Dwarf or Orc (depending on mythos)
For Human Characters I tend to use normal, everyday names names and either change the spelling or add a syllable here and there or just otherwise mess them up. Say Elzibeth or Daymon or something.
Changing the names of months or gemstones about is great for most female characters (although I did once have a Dwarf called 'Hammerfist'. Heh. 'Geddit? I know, it's lame.)
I also like to create 'meaningful' names for joke characters. Such as Erroleas Flynneth for a swashbuckling Elf or Artur Brun for a fire-using Human magi. I tend to do this when I'm not taking a game seriously, though.
EDIT: The above typically applies to Fantasy games. I tend to just use straight-up human names for human sci-fi characters. (Unless it's Dark heresy...)

Well the word umbrella DID come from merging Umbra (shade) and Umbel (A flower that is shaped round and flat, which was the initial inspiration).Azaradel said:

I usually give them my name and the names of people I know. I don't really put much thought into this stuff though. Except when I played Earthbound.
This is how I name my MMO characters:
1) Go to wikipedia
2) Hit random article
3) Title of page = name
It has spawned some interesting characters such as Chlorine Fluorides, Wheelchair Fencing, and The Broken Window

Mixing the villain's and hero's name works good. Or just naming them Satan, and if it's an RPG name the allies Jesus, and name the girl something masculine, like Francisco.
Usually in RPGs I come up with some bullshit name that sounds kind of fantasy-esque but I very often go with Minarri, my screenname, which I came up with one day.
Lately though I'm heavily favoring Jett Corstar, ever since one of my students mistakenly wrote "jetcoaster" ("rollercoaster") like that, capitalization and all.

I go with Glerken. Made it up years ago, and I'm sticking with it. It's unique, and is always open. If you google the word Glerken, you'll come up with a long list of forums I once posted on. But ya, any game that lets me name my character/display name, I name as Glerken.
