Naming Your Character

I have a regular practice when given the option to name my character in a game: Males will be named after Kurt Vonnegut (Mass Effect's TRUE hero: Commander Kurt Von Shepard). When the character is female, I'm less consistent. Usually, she'll be named after a female musician (eg: Karen O, Kim Gordon). How do you name your characters? Do you name them after yourself or someone you look up to? Do you make it absurd and humorous? Or are you a nihilistic namer who has no pattern at all?

That would be me. Really it depends on my mood- I may decide to make up a funny name or I will do a serious one.

I'll spend a lot of time trying to make names for characters. Sometimes I use set of names based on my enjoyment with the character in a game.

I name it after me if I am going for a character who I want to be like me, Name it Tyler Durden if I make a character who I want to be like.

Riobux if male, Rioth if female; usually.

Sometimes I'll just get bored and just call them John or Jane or something.

I usually use Jedoro if it's a fantasy setting, Conner if it's a realistic or futuristic setting.

If it's a male, I tend to just name them after myself. If it's a female, I just pick a girl's name which I like. Simple as that, I don't put too much effort into the names.

I usually try to name the character their actual names. Only when I'm so extremely bored or pissed off, do I name them something different.

I usually name them after myself.

Though having said that I did call someone 'Slashy McSlashenstein' when I got bored.

I usually name characters with the default name.
Sometimes I get really creative and I'll spell "Crono" "Krono"
ooooooooh....
My own name doesn't really ring well in games so "Saran Shepard" doesn't really do it for me.
I named my guy John Shepard after the SGA character though.

What would you do if you had to name 6 characters in an RPG party? :O The real reason why old school games failed.

I don't name characters the same way every time. I remember having frontier character called Commander Reznor but have never used that since. I wonder if Kim Gordon would call her characters Sugar Kane and if Vonnegut would call his characters Killgore Trout? Heh.

I try to be creative with my character names. Even when it doesn't matter. Although I have taken to naming my male Shepards "Titty" after falling off my chair laughing at Yahtzee's Mass Effect review. XD

I call all male characters Hashime or something middle eastern and make them look like suicide bombers the best I can. I usually don't make female characters, but if I do I name them after the latest Hurricane / Typhoon.

I name all of mine "Aridin Therandil" if male (in fantasy RPG's anyway). A friend of mine names his "Venault". Another uses "Sull de Said". Most of my friends have names like this that they come back to.

I resort to using the names from the D&D 3.5 manuals, they're usually free, or in an offline game, easier then thinking up one of your own.
