Natural shooter multiplayer?

Two words: Red Orchestra.

That is one of the most realistic online shooters ever to exist.

Want to fire a rifle? You have to cock the bolt manually.

Want to hit that guy on a rooftop on the other side of the map? Adjust for bullet drop and wind.

Machine gun overheats? Change the barrel.

Hear that artillery in the distance? That hits the map at random, killing you.

Want to rush the enemy and then teabag them? Don't.

Seriously, you want realistic online shooting? Play RO. RO2's coming out soon as well.

Yeah RO is fun. I'm absolute rubbish at it but I still find myself enjoying running around and ambushing enemies. Nothing I have ever doen in MW2 has been as satisfying as sneaking through enemy lines in RO and methodically eliminating enemy troops.

That and melee is insanely balanced. Sure the Bayonet can kill in one or two stabs, but try stabbing a guy with a PP7 or a MP40 and you are one bullet ridden corpse. Don't even get me started on rifle butting people...

OT: you can't make people feel fear in an online deathmatch with other people. In a single player environment it's possible, but with other people, on a game, there is no fear.

In fact, a game like that would be no fun anyway, so I don't wanna.

I thought L4D did a pretty good job of geting people working together and moving as a unit rather than lone wolfing. The realism mode is really brutal, when you die that's it, no respawning for the rest of the game.

Obviously you still get people who rush ahead shot gunning everything until a smoker gets a hold of them and then they die because no one is near enough to rescue him/her in time.

It would be no fun, and would not sell among the "hardcore" croud due to the mechanic, nor the "casual" crowd as it's not a sequel.

No company in their right mind would make it.

When you play an FPS in singleplayer, you expect the AI to act like people, right?
Taking cover, using covering fire, and so forth.
But when you play nultiplayer, no one acts like that. And why should they, they do not feel fear, and even when they feel stress, it's not the same.


Question:
How would one design a game so that real-life tactics would be applicable?
How would one make people fear the death of their character?
Any ideas?

Gears did a good job, with people having relatively small health and incentive to use teamwork and hide.

Reduced mobility while being shot at and the 'injured' system is a good way in my opinion.

To the OP, you already explained the base reason why your question can't be answered:

Players don't behave like they would in real life because there is no fear. It's the same reason that paint-ball can't be compared to real combat tactics. No one would throw their ass to the wind the way that players do in games.

I don't see any way to artificially instill this instinct into a player base outside of extremely harsh dealth penalties, which has only really been done in the oldest MMO's.

Yeah, the only issue is that the game mechanics make you feel like you're steering an ocean liner, not a modern soldier. Other than that factor GRAW2 is pretty decent in terms of tactics.
