Need help with Demon's Souls. Official's Cap gone missing!

Hi all.

I'm in my first playthrough of Demon's Souls and just cleared 1-3. After chasing the fat official for a while, I finally caught up with him and killed him. My item burden was maxed out, so when I tried to loot the body I just got the "overburdened" message.

No problem yet. Then Ostrava, being a dick, asks me to open the gate. I figured I had to prevent him from getting killed, and left the item while opening the gate. I was then immediately slain by two red-eye knights.

Having fought my way back now, the corpse and item are completely gone. Is there any other way for me to get the cap (and Yuria) now or am I completely fucked?

I mean really, I'll do anything at this point. Just want to know if there's any hope whatsoever or if I should just forget about it and make a new character or something (though I'm level 54, it would be kind of a shame).

I think the item is gone from the play through, but you just beat the game and you can run through the game once more and get it then.

Just start again then. If your just on your first run through then it shouldn't be a problem.

On the right side of the fog door to the boss fight there's a gap you can shoot arrows through.(stand against the wall and aim at the maneater, it might be easier to see if you have the brightness maxed) Don't use magical or fire arrows or the Lava Bow because they push the maneater a bit back, you need between 200 and 300 arrows to kill him.

With this strategy you still need to deal with the second half of the fight, but for that you can use this weapon [http://demonssouls.wikidot.com/meat-cleaver].

One thing I do advise, rescue Sage Freke and get Warding by trading the Tower Knight's soul for it. Even though you're not a mage, the 75% physical damage reduction will save your life in many fights(and it'll make New Game Plus a lot easier).

Don't make a new game, is all I can advise. If you've made it that far you'll probably be able to finish the game soon. Just go back there in NG+ and get a new one. It's not a necessary item by any means. If you feel strongly about it, you can find someone online you can trade one with.
You can have one of mine if you want.
