Neil deGrasse Tyson's Cosmos Arrives in 2014
Neil deGrasse Tyson is the coolest astrophysicist on the planet. But the planet's not big enough for a man of his stature, so he found himself a spaceship and he took it out... into the Cosmos!
Cosmos, for those not in the know, was a 13-part television documentary hosted by Carl Sagan that ran in the early 80s. Known in full as Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, it enjoyed both popular and critical acclaim, taking home an Emmy and a Peabody Award. Sagan, sadly, is no longer with us, but in 2011 it was announced that his show would return with Tyson at the helm.
The trailer doesn't really show it, but Tyson is an ideal replacement for Sagan. He's very media-savvy and has a talent for making complex ideas accessible, and is also an unflagging and very effective supporter of increased scientific endeavor. He demonstrated his knack for making a point with both clarity and flair in 2012 when he told the United States Senate Science Committee, "Right now, NASA's annual budget is half a penny on your tax dollar. For twice that - a penny on a dollar - we can transform the country from a sullen, dispirited nation, weary of economic struggle, to one where it has reclaimed its 20th century birthright to dream of tomorrow."
The 13-part Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey will air on Fox in 2014.
