NES and SNES over PS1?

Which brand of games holds up better today, the Nintendo era games or the PS1 era games?

For me I think I'd rather play a classic Mario, Contra or Castlevania over a classic PS1 game such as Tony Hawk, Gran Turismo, or Driver.

I just think that at the point of the super nintendo the old 2d graphics were coming to their pinnacle and thus you got the best out of them. Whereas, when the PS1 came out the 3d gaming was relatively new and thus not reached it's best.

I personally feel that the PS1 games look so outdated and feel horrible to play nowadays. Whilst SNES and NES games are simple and brilliant. Obviously their is the fair selection of poor games for each but we're talking about in general terms.

What's your opinion?

Honestly it's about even if you go for the entire life of the PS1 (but to be fair you'd really have to add PS2 since you considered the first two Nintendo generations). While the early PS1 titles are horrid today a lot of the later games are longer and hold up better than 90% of the NES library and didn't have the amount of licensed crap the SNES had.

Really you can make a case for any of the three as the best ever, but IMO it's so close it's hard to call. (I say this as someone who got a NES in 1985 and the others on release day, so I lived through it)

PS1 had its gems, chiefly MGS and FFIX.

But on a "hit for hit" basis, I'd rather take tech at the height of its skill rather then tech in its infancy anyday.

I think it depends which generation of gaming you grew up in. You're always going to prefer the games you remember playing in your youth.

I couldn't possibly choose between one and the other. I mean, they both have incredible jewels that are irreplaceable.

SNES:
- Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
- Super Mario World
- Yoshi's Island
- Super Metroid

PSX:
- Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX
- Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3
- Silent Hill
- Gran Turismo

How could you choose?!?!?! It'd be like "you can have sex with Kate Beckinsale or Anne Hathaway, but ONLY one". I mean, whichever you choose is gonna be awesome, but deep inside your mind you'll always know you let the other one go.

You can get their attention better if you just quote them. Like this!

OT: Honestly I prefer the NES/SNES library because I have a huge amount of nostalgia with my Super Nintendo.

I think it depends on how you look at it. SNES era games and late NES era games were the best of the 2D generation using sprites, not counting fighting games. PS1 was right at the start of the polygon era, so SNES games haven't really been outdone on their own turf. PS1 games definitely have. The thing is though, you can run PS1 games in emulator at higher than native resolution making them look a lot better, same for the N64. I'd put upscaled PS1 graphics up there with SNES graphics. Where the SNES does better though is straight 2D gameplay is far more polished than 3D gameplay.

SNES holds up better than PS1. It's basically good 2d(which holds up just fine) vs early 3d(which looks bad now). Both were good systems though.

I prefer SNES and NES games.

I grew up playing the PS1 so i love the hell out of that too, but recently looking back on the NES/SNES library, it has so many amazing games that are as fun as ever.

NES is just decent. It was good in its hayday, but it just doesn't hold up anymore. PS1 is a great console, with a good library. But the early titles were mostly piss.

SNES, however, is the BEST. CONSOLE. EVER.

I grew up on NES and SNES so the games on those systems still hold the most value for me. I guess nostalgia is a pretty big factor when it comes to classic games I enjoy.

Depends. The JRPGs from the PS1 era are the best in my opinion, and the 3d platformers are basically at their best at that time. At the same time, the NES and SNES had some great 2d platformers and beat-em-ups. Turtles in Time is still a personal favorite of mine.

I really got into games with the PS1 though, so I'm gonna have to go with that.

That's a really tough thing to decide. I guess if I had to choose just one console as the only way I'd have to game with forever, I guess I'd say the SNES. It has the All Star collection that I can lose a lot of time with, my favorite brawler of all time in Batman Returns and all the classic Square RPG's (before they decided they wanted to make movies).

But at the same time there are a lot of games on the NES and the PS1 that I love (along with every other console save the N64, I really never had too many games I just adored on it; my least favorite system).

Like I said it's close on all of them but If I just had to choose one it would be the SNES.
