Okay, I've heard about this thing called "Netflix" for a few years now but I only recently began to wonder "wtf is it?!" Because it is on xbox one and ps4 By the way I am an Australian so it's not in my country. But from what I understand it is the American version of Aus-Star or Foxtel. Aka a cable box that provides more channels than the free-to-air channels and you also pay a monthly fee for it. Correct?

No, it's not a physical cable box that you can see and touch. What it is is a pay-for service, where you log in, and then you're able to select your show/movie and what episode you want to watch. Netflix is on pretty much all devices, because they're streamed through the internet, so as long as you have a device capable of accessing the internet and has a web browser, you have Netflix.

Not sure exactly what kind of service Aus-Star or Foxtel offer but Netflix is basically an on demand streaming service, you pay a subscription fee that allows you to access the service from several web enabled devices. Devices like PCs, Consoles, Smart TVs and any kind of set top box or DVD/Media player with smart functionality.

You then add favourites or enable recommendations to help find stuff you want to watch and can browse through categories or by producer or channel, users can watch films, TV series and documentaries.

It can be better value than a cable service in some circumstances.

So is it like iTunes? Where you pay for the movies and shows? Or are they subscription-based?

Simplest version would be "like youtube with good content", but you also pay for every video.
Downside of course is their region coverage is next to none, even worse then Xbox One.

Remember MegaVideo?
It's like that, but legal as legal can be.

You pay a MONTHLY fee for everything.
Not per video or whatever.

Netflix has contracts with several big, and small, named studios.

This allows them to stream pretty much their ENTIRE catalog of TV shows and movies.

Subscription based, at least the UK service is. You pay a fee and access the entire library.

i would like to mention that Netflix is actually a combination two services, which you pay for separately but share a common interface (at least on PC): an online web-based video streaming service (with HD for compatible players/TVs and movies/TV shows) and an dvd/blu-ray renting service thru snail mail.

its like $8 US for each service. i pay for my parents to have the renting service (they are poor and only have dial up), and i have the streaming service with my high speed internet through my PS3 (or my wife's ipad2, or my computer, or my laptop, or my android phone, or my 3DS (seriously!)). we dropped the rental service because we're lazy and too impatient to wait for a few days.

its better than cable most of the time (but they are behind a year or so with TV shows), and allows you to veg out and watch say... all of star trek. or x-files. or hundreds of other older TV shows.
