As we completely fuck up the planet because no one is dying and Earth can't support the extra population.

I intend to live forever, so I just need to live long enough for a new technology to come out that will make my life eternal and beneficial.

Damn your "moral" and "economic" concerns. There's nothing moral about getting old and dying, that's just a coping mechanism we invented to justify our meager existence.

As for the economic concern about cashing retirement, no one is going to retire at 70 if that's barely middle age. You seem to assume that when we have immortals walking around, everything is just going to stay the same.

Question number 1
Do I really wanna live to 150 years?
Question number 2
-HOW- exactly will I be living till 150 years? I can't imagine me looking all shrivled up and still living like I should be right?

And then of course, why do we keep meddeling with nature's course?
Everything is supposed to die sometime right?
Because not meddling with nature's course means...

Not saving the stillborn.
Not treating diabetes.
Not eradicating smallpox.
Not wearing spectacles.
Not using computers.
Not creating the electric light.

Seriously, at what point do you stop "not meddling with nature?" It's human nature to tell the limitations imposed on us to go to hell, by learning as much as we can about those limitations, and then wrecking them.

If this drug also keeps you healthy for longer, that's a plus. I don't want to be some wrinkly old man for another 70 years. But there would be concerns regarding overpopulation, morality, side effects, and the cost to economies to cover pensions.

I'm not sure where I stand on this at the moment, but if you can work past these issues, it'll certainly be a benefit

You think social security is broken now? Just wait until people can claim checks for 70 years after they retire.
Oh they'll just raise the retirement age.

Worse thing, though: imagine spending one hundred years doing the same job because you messed up your degree. Hell, imagine spending a hundred years doing any job. With that much time, you could have two whole careers before you even retire.

I'm not sure that would be good for humanity as a whole... Unless we inflict some sort of population control.

Hmm.
If I don't live this lifetime to my full extent, then I don't think I deserve a second.
And if I live my life as well as I can, then I'll have no need for a second.
So... I think my mind is made up. :)

We've already been given so many medical and scientific breakthroughs to live so very long. I'll completely understand if people disagree with me, and I'll honestly be surprised if, when I am old, my kids and grandkids life expectancy hasn't increased even more. I will, in fact, be very happy for them that they can live a longer and fuller life than I ever could.
But for me, well... I think I'll pass this up.

<color=white>As long as you will forgive me if my indecisive mind is changed later in my life. :p

Gaming comment - In the Mass Effect Universe isn't the average life span of a human 150 years? Or was it up to 150 years.

Real World Comment- Even with such an advance possible there is still many unknowns; would it be made available only to those deemed "Valuable"? Would the drug be covered by an HMO or insurance plan? SO many questions but this is definitely something to watch.

This sounds like a scary episode of Star Trek or something.
It's like that episode of Star Trek Voyager where the Hologram doctor was in some floating hospital and there was this drug in short supply they were useing to extend everyone's life span. But only the most important people to society would get the drug; A Professor over a garabge worker sorta stuff.

What do you mean? Star Trek frequently mentioned that humans lived for 150 years or more in the Federation and that the average human lifespan easily exceeded a century.

One day science is extending your lifespan, the next day you're a brain in a jar betting Quatloos while the Trogs fight for your amusement.

Sorry, I've been nerding out on classic Star Trek ever since it came to Netflix instant watch a while back. The article just reminded me of some of the "Science has taken our humanity" episodes. I wasn't trying to be specific so much as I was trying to be pithy. Sorry for the confusion.

You can, but why would you want too?

Think of the reprecussions that would come with a drug like that.

But what if we're supposed to die? What if what comes next is what it is really about?
Death can wait, if it couldn't we wouldn't be already living that long.

Being an atheist, I like the idea of extending my life. Bring it on!
Oh and I also would really like to witness first contact with aliens. After that I can die happy.

If this is true, this is very bad.
We're overpopulated already with the lifespan we have now, if we add 150 years onto it we'll be practically crushed under the weight of people in the world...

Of course we are. Life would be pretty meaningless and worthless if we never died. People just want to live for longer. I'm not sure if it's a good idea though. This seems like something that will only be available to the supremely wealthy people of the world and will cause an even greater divide between the upper and lower classes. I can understand the value of a person being able to carry on with their work for longer; imagine what Tesla would have accomplished had he lived 150 years. But given that our planet is already overpopulated, I can't see this being a good thing.
