I don't really have an interest in the show and I've tried (even my friend tried so hard but in the end it didn't even matter, maybe because of how they portray the reincarnation of King Arthur (He was male in actual history and I'd rather it stay that way).
While I enjoyed the show (first part, going to see the F/N sequel soon), How they made King Arthur a female for the sake of having a female really bothered me. Its still a good show and I 'll probably watch it to the end, but I kinda wish either they kept it to history and made King Arthur a male, or have saber be King Arthur's wife or daughter.
It's why I loved Saint Young men, they kept Jesus as Jesus and Buddha as bbuddah (albeit buddha wasn't a single person XD)and I thoroughly enjoyed the show and the two mens antics.

It's just with me, if a show decides to copy someone from history and decides to make them the opposite of what they are I can't help but feel irked and uninterested.

Agreed, Its still a very good show and as I said, I plan to watch the new series, Saber just felt odd and out of place, I couldn't take her seriously. What really kept me interested was the other characters, like Rider's personallity and Kariya Matō (Beserker's master)as well as the main plot. Its just Saber herself just felt flat and unintersting until the end of the first show.

Unlike you guys I really hope it's not Heaven's Feel. That route was a load of arse.
My guess it they'd say if it was anyone, this is probably a new plotline, hopefully one without Sakura.

Also everyone pissed about female King Arthur; dude was a fictional king, at least almost everything we know about him is fictional. They can do whatever they want with the character as long as it's interesting, which Saber is.
"Pissed" isnt the word I would use. Maybe unsatisfied for just making a gender-swapped character without adding to it, but I'm not mad per-say at the creators for making saber a female Arthur. I'm just saying that there are much better candidates for a good female role/hero then taking one that has been written and established (also generally accepted) as a male lead, and gender swapping. I felt it took more away then it added.

for some examples off the top of my head:

Queen Elisabeth
King Arthur's wife/daughter
Joan de Arc
Madien of the mist (from the same King Arthur legend)
Cleopatra

and I'm sure I can get much more if I looked around.

Lastly, Addressing you final point, I think its more of a preference. I though Saber's character (aside from being female) was the 2nd least interesting character (Assassin takes the lead for not having any). Rider was my favorite, though the interaction of Archer and Kirei with the grail, and the story with Kariya Matō was really good too, wish it ended better for him though.

Point is, You may of found Saber's character interesting, while nothing wrong with it, but I found it bland, mixed with the odd and not very strong choice of making saber a gender-swapped King Arthur for little reason.
(though it would make a much better possible story if Saber was instead the wife/daughter and berserk was a "fallen" King Arthur, that would be pretty cool, but that's just me).

Problem aside from Joan de Arc (who is in Fate/Apocrypha) none of those fit the criteria of 'noble and honourable knight Servant who can also be a love interest'

Elisabeth didn't fight and when dealing with a historical figure we know so much about that would feel weirder (see Nero in Fate/Extra.

I dont remember much about Arthur's wife but there's no way she could have been made a Servant, she didn't do anything. Same with the Lady of the Lake, she was a moistened bint who lobbed a scimitar.

Cleo could work but she wouldn't match Saber class. Also I don't think she would match Shirou's personality; he needs a ultimate good, Cleopatra was a bit of a ***** really.

There are very few women in myth, its a sad truth but them's the breaks. I feel the gender swap was a valid choice, I know its opinion but I just thought I would say

oh, Joan is shown, didn't know that. I'm still yet to see the others shows lol.

Elisabeth would be odd to do as well, at least, not for a saber class. Though Im no history major, didnt she have a sister or relative that she de-throne and put into jail? I know one Queen did that, would make a good Beserker/Saber mix there.

I don't think Arthur's wife (if he even had one) was mentioned at all, but I would think that would be better cause there is more shape to the character that could be created. Same with a daughter

I heard something Like the lady of the lake (or madien of the mist) gave Arthur Excalibur, so I was going on that path.

Cleo would be more of a caster, and probably not 'The main' character, but could still be a established female role.

I can respect your opinion, and I know that it would be hard to find another lead without completely changing the story, even still, I feel like there are better options. Matters of Opinions at this point.

Though I would like to point out that If we are using the logic that "fictional characters can be altered" then why not say something like "King Arthur took all the credit, including what Queen Arthur did." Or even just by being a descendant of King Arthur makes that character a hero, though untold, or something like that. Both characters can fit a good female role + use Excalibur + being the ultimate good.

P.S after re-reading, Saber was a love interest? Is this something that was gone into more depth outside the first show?

Fate/ Stay Night the anime is based on a visual novel. There are three routes you can take in the novel each one based around one of the heroines

Fate: Saber's route
Unlimited Blade Works: Rin's
Heaven's Feel: Sakura's

Routes change a huge amount of the plot, to the point where you can see them as three different stories. Each girl is the love interest in their own route. If you're into the universe I'd play the VN if I were you, its generally considered better than the anime.

Joan appears in one of the many spin off games from the VN, same with Nero who has also been gender swapped, it's completely retarded.

Thats a really cool idea! I wish more writers were as creative as this. I'll haft get around to all of them though.
I'll also look more into the VN, it seems pretty interesting, Thanks!

EDIT: After having watched the teaser trailer, it's looking more and more like it's simply a remake of the Fate route which the original series followed. But it's just a teaser trailer, so who knows.
I can't see the trailer right now, but if it's the same one I've seen before, it's mostly composed of scenes from the opening videos for Fate, UBW, and HF from the PS Vita remake of Fate/Stay Night: Realta Nua, which ufotable did the animation for. There are like three new bits of animation right at the end, from scenes common to all three routes.

By the way, if you haven't seen the Vita openings before, look them up on Youtube. It's impossible to find them in not-shit quality, but they blow the old openings off the fucking planet.
You're absolutely right! That's pretty much what I saw. I hadn't seen these before, I guess I knew nothing about the Vita release. Those intros were awesome!

Hmm, so maybe it's all just there to remind people what era it'll take place in. It'd be nice if it could be the Ilya arc, if Nasu has finished it, but I'd settle for Heaven's Feel! I just really hope it won't be a redux of the first series.
