It's why I loved Saint Young men, they kept Jesus as Jesus and Buddha as bbuddah (albeit buddha wasn't a single person XD)and I thoroughly enjoyed the show and the two mens antics.
It's just with me, if a show decides to copy someone from history and decides to make them the opposite of what they are I can't help but feel irked and uninterested.
Agreed, Its still a very good show and as I said, I plan to watch the new series, Saber just felt odd and out of place, I couldn't take her seriously. What really kept me interested was the other characters, like Rider's personallity and Kariya Matō (Beserker's master)as well as the main plot. Its just Saber herself just felt flat and unintersting until the end of the first show.

Unlike you guys I really hope it's not Heaven's Feel. That route was a load of arse.
My guess it they'd say if it was anyone, this is probably a new plotline, hopefully one without Sakura.
Also everyone pissed about female King Arthur; dude was a fictional king, at least almost everything we know about him is fictional. They can do whatever they want with the character as long as it's interesting, which Saber is.
"Pissed" isnt the word I would use. Maybe unsatisfied for just making a gender-swapped character without adding to it, but I'm not mad per-say at the creators for making saber a female Arthur. I'm just saying that there are much better candidates for a good female role/hero then taking one that has been written and established (also generally accepted) as a male lead, and gender swapping. I felt it took more away then it added.
for some examples off the top of my head:
Queen Elisabeth
King Arthur's wife/daughter
Joan de Arc
Madien of the mist (from the same King Arthur legend)
Cleopatra
and I'm sure I can get much more if I looked around.
Lastly, Addressing you final point, I think its more of a preference. I though Saber's character (aside from being female) was the 2nd least interesting character (Assassin takes the lead for not having any). Rider was my favorite, though the interaction of Archer and Kirei with the grail, and the story with Kariya Matō was really good too, wish it ended better for him though.
Point is, You may of found Saber's character interesting, while nothing wrong with it, but I found it bland, mixed with the odd and not very strong choice of making saber a gender-swapped King Arthur for little reason.
(though it would make a much better possible story if Saber was instead the wife/daughter and berserk was a "fallen" King Arthur, that would be pretty cool, but that's just me).
