New Mario Kart 8 Trailer Zooms Through Giant Cakes, Jungle Ruins

Rosalina, ATVs, and hovering UFOs all make an appearance.

We first heard that the venerable [a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/previews/10437-Preview-Mario-Kart-8-Is-What-You-Expected-and-a-Little-More]Mario Kart[/a] franchise was getting its eighth numbered iteration back at E3. We saw new vehicles, like the hovering UFOs and rugged ATVs, as they soared through various environments using the occasional anti-gravity pad. With the recent Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo showed off a brand-new trailer for Mario Kart 8, featuring Rosalina as a playable character.

The trailer starts with Mario and Co. racing through an operational airport, something that's terrorist-like enough to flirt with an M rating here in the west. However, they are soon whisked away to a giant land full with candy and cakes, in a course that will likely be called "Sugar Rush" regardless of the actual name. After that, there are the jungle ruins, complete with deadly pits and rolling obstacles, and a bony desert where you race along the ribcage of giant, dead animals. The trailer tops things off with a floating cloud city, which looks like a happier place to be than Bioshock Infinite's Columbia. There, you see the Star Princess herself, Rosalina, zooming about on a superbike.

As you'd expect, Mario Kart 8 will build off of the 3DS's Mario Kart 7. There's the hang gliding and the coin-collecting, but the new anti-gravity pads and drifting mechanics look intriguing. The ability to pop out a hang glider and drive on the walls reminds me just enough of F-Zero get develop some serious interest here. Expect it to arrive on the Wii U in spring of 2014.

More Rosalina? This looks pretty exciting, I like all of the new tracks shown, especially the airport one. This might just be the game which finally encourages me to invest in a Wii U if it lives up to it's promises when it comes out.

We are leaving this, the year of Luigi, for the Year Of Rosalina next year. Anyway, looks as fun as most Mario Kart games.

[sub]Sonic and All Stars Racing is still better =P[/sub]

I'd say it's more of the Winter of Rosalina, or Winter of the Stars, which might be hinting at when those Star Festivals are in the Galaxy Games.

Still, Mario Kart 8 Looks awesome!

Do it bud, me and SkarKrow will be playing against each other, you can join in too! We could use more players!

Especially since this looks to be the best Mario Kart yet.
I'm tempted but that Wii U price tag is still pretty hefty, hopefully SSB4 will be good enough to justify a purchase between it and Mario Kart!

Ehh, can't say I'm impressed. Obviously, we'll have to wait until the thing comes out to judge it, but the fact that it has a lot of stuff that I didn't like from Mario Kart Wii (such as motorcycles and 12 player races) makes me worried. Of course, this is coming from someone that thinks Double Dash is the greatest racing game ever made, so I guess there's probably no way I wouldn't be disappointed.

But seriously Nintendo, rerelease Double Dash. There are too many people that have not experienced it's glory!

You've still not given me a friend request on the Wii U...>.>

OT: There is just one thing I need from Mario Kart 8, and that is Bowser's pimp car. If that's not in the game then I will be disappointed.

Wait until I am done with Assassins Creed IV, I have naught turned it on since I have played it, once I am done, I will likely lose myself in Mario 3D World, then I will send you your request.
3D World won't take you too long, believe me. Hell you actually can go through the entire game using only 1 character most of the time. The only time you have to be a different character is for the 1 level that has a button that only a certain character can step on. Mario's is in World 2, Peach's is in World 3, Toad's is in World 5, Luigi's is in World 7, and Rosalina's is in the bonus world since you don't unlock her until the bonus world.

Now I feel guilty though about not finishing my LP of it yet...sorta stopped at World 5 because of school. XD

We will be playing that as well, you must join us!

C'mon man, you know you want it, throw in Super Mario 3D World, Super Mario Bros U and Wind Waker HD in there and you have many a weekend lost to vidya gaems.
Not a huge fan of the 2D Mario series or Legend of Zelda (flameshield activate), so those aren't really system-sellers for me, still I'd be surprised if I don't pick it up sometime in 2014.

You in?

Also, prioritizing school over vidya gaems? I thought you above that...
Wait, 3D World doesn't have online multiplayer, what are you talking about.
Also, I'm a shame to vidya gaems everywhere! T^T

Wait wait is that like an F-Zero hovercraft mode that they have mid course... I am happy and sad at the same time. I mean i love the slide type of game-play that Fzero type of racing physics bring but does this mean that Nintendo gave up on the franchise?

So basically Mario Kart 7 with fancier graphics and an orientation change on some tracks. They really DO need to start from scratch to prevent the series from stagnating. If Mario Kart 9 is not built from a clean slate as a complete reboot with new mechanics and ideas I will be disappointed.
