You mean the world really isn't going to end?

When did we start trusting the predictions of ancient civilisations anyway?
Since they started writing them down.

Too bad these "predictions" were written down by monks after the events actually happened. Monks were the select few for hundreds of years that were learned scholars so they were in charge of making duplicates of the bible. So it stands to reason that certain aspects of these stories changed to suit the needs and agendas of the religious leaders of the time. This practice continued up till the point of the moveable printing press came to be and the bible started getting mass produced and the common person began to learn to read.

Then History went one way and Revelations went another.

The end of a calendar doesn't predict the end of the world? Color me shocked, my word a day calendar ends early in the year 2013, I was getting all set to be ready for the end by then...
My Sports Illustrated Swim Suit Edition 2012 calendar is only for this year? THe world must be ending after that!!!

That's fascinating. I do have one question though. Were the five unlucky days not counted in the calendar or did they have a seperate solar calendar from the Long Count calendar?
They had several calendars. The two basic were the Solar Calendar, like ours, and a religious calendar based on 260 days. There were a few others, such as the Lunar calendar, but I'm not very familiar. The 5 unlucky days belong to the solar year. The solar year is divided into 18 'months' of twenty days each with its own 'theme'. The five unlucky days do not belong to a month and are therefore, not part of the system. Hence the unlucky aspect.
That's very interesting. It speaks a lot of their psychological character to condemn a mathematical inconsistency within the calendar brought about by their own parameters.
Also, I have a follow-up question: I assume that the five and quarter 'missing' days each year are taken into consideration when translating the Mayan calendar into our own calendar? Otherwise after 5000 years we'd be missing a couple of years...

Yes. We've been aware of it pretty much since shortly after first contact.

At any rate, I doubt we'll get out answer on 12/21/12, but the beliefs stand on their own. Personally, as "cool" as it might be, I think that the date is mostly Mayan supposition, something they probably came up with seperate from the origin of those ruins.
The hell? What are you on about? The point is, Mayanist and Mesoamerican specialists have debunked it. They also have explanations for those points that you bring up. The truth is the Apocalypse is a Western Christian belief, and has been so for thousands of years.

Seriously? the end of the world is "delayed" now that we found an even longer Mayan calendar?

Also whoever came up with captchas where we have to describe actual brands we may or may not have heard of can go die in a fire. A lot.

We survived 2006/06/06

We survived 2011/11/11

And holy crap looked at that... We're gonna survive 2012.

THESE KITTEN CALENDERS AT THE GREETING CARD STORES ONLY GO TO THE END OF 2012!!!! THE MAYANS WERE RIGHT!!!

Seriously, all calenders end. When did this become SUCH a thing?! They'd have probably done a better job of foreseeing their own demise if they could have predicted something like this to the DAY 2000 years in the future...

When are people ever going to learn?

The world isn't going to end. Humanity will end. There's a difference. I think it's already started to happen myself - AIDS, failing economies, corporatized music auditions (Idol, I stare at thee), 4chan, and necrophilia. Just to name a few.

Besides, at the rate we're going, the end of humanity of would be a great justice unto the universe at this point.

Yeah but what idiot would even believe the Mayan prediction in the first place? Did we really need a scientist to find proof that it was all bullshit? Really?
You're talking about a race that honestly believed the rapture was nigh and sold all of their belongings because a mad man told them to.

As if it mattered anyway! But it may at least shut up some of the 2012er people. Not that it will shut up all of them, considering many will now remain convinced until the 1st of January 2013 because they've latched onto it too tightly.

Excellent! Those fools fell for my ruse! I'll call the other horsemen and tell them no one will be expecting us when the time finally comes!

I mean uh, this mayan calendar thing is ridiculous.
Dammit Grimh stop playing with Death's computer and get back to work. Pestilence's and Famine's horses aren't going to brush and water themselves.

I think that we all know how this happened...

"Mr. The Crazy Legs! The Mayans have left a helpful calender behind to help with the future! What should we do?!"

"Simple, my alien minions! Let's change a few words on it!"

"... Why?"

"To troll the UNIVERSE!"

7,000 years? I don't even think we have 100....

This isn't going to convince anybody of anything. If I believed that the 2012 prediction wasn't BS, (which I do) I would've thought "Oh so some guy got carried away with his calculations." Happens.
