New Research Continues to Question Links Between Videogames and Violence

A new study conducted by Middlesex University [http://www.mdx.ac.uk/]has once again brought into question the purported links between violent videogames and violent behavior in real life.

The new research by Jane Barnett, a research student at the university, included 292 male and female online gamers between the ages of 12 and 83. Each player filled out a questionnaire relating to anger, aggression and personality, after which they played World of Warcraft [http://www.worldofwarcraft.com] for two hours. Following the play sessions, they completed the questionnaire a second time.

Although there were differences in reactions dependent upon age, gender and personality, the psychologists found overall that gamers were more likely to feel either calm or tired after playing, rather than pumped up and prone to increased aggression. "There were actually higher levels of relaxation before and after playing the game as opposed to experiencing anger but this did very much depend on personality type," Barnett said.

"This will help us to develop an emotion and gaming questionnaire to help distinguish the type of gamer who is likely to transfer their online aggression into everyday life," she added. The results of the study were to be presented at the British Psychological Society's [http://www.bps.org.uk/] Annual Conference in Dublin, being held today.

Im not implying that videogames make us violent, but WoW is a rather tame example of videogame violence. A study on CoD, Manhunt or GTA would be more...conclusive.

Gads, at this point they're going to prove that researching the connection between violent behavior and video games causes people to be more violent.

I'm inclined to agree, though at least this should stop people having a cover-all view that all games incense (sp) violence. Should being the operative word here ¬_¬

Well, part of the problem is that detractors of videogames don't differentiate.

And part of the "theory" is basically that committing violence in a game desensitizes you to doing the real thing, and while WoW violence is less "realistic" than others you mention would presumably diminish, but not eliminate, the alleged effect.

I suspect they were looking for the broadest demographic possible for a game that's considered violent by mainstream standards, and that's WoW.

I guess you have a point. But to measure "desensetation" over a long term period of time it takes alot more then a simple questionare after a 2 hour play session. Feeling or not feeling agressive after those session does not indicate if your desensitised.

The whole "theory" that video games make you angry is nonsense, ask any teenager or child and they will say that they feel calmer after a playing a game (note: the word game, games usually imply a task that focuses on relaxation and calmness)although WoW is not a particularly good example, I mean who doesn't get angry whilst playing through a crap MMORPG. Games are there to let you experience things you could not often do in the real world, people play violent games to release that anger whilst people play Guitar Hero to try and live those rock star dreams. Video games have become the new scape goat for the media to blame for all violence and dissent in society, like rock music was in the 60's.

Couldn't they be trying to find the cure for cancer or something? Do they have nothing better or more important to do? So what if they do get the conclusion that 'violent' games make 'some' people more prone to violence? Going to test people before they buy any games? This is a study that chases it's tail.
