New X-Com Shooter Coming From BioShock 2 Studio

It's official: 2K Marin, the team that brought you X-Com [http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=73955] franchise.

Described as a "reimagining" of the series that was created by MicroProse [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MicroProse] in the mid-90s, players in the new XCom game (that's right, XCom, not X-Com) will take on the role of an FBI agent in charge of identifying and eliminating a deadly threat posed by "an unknown and faceless enemy that is violent probing and plotting its way into our world." The game will maintain the "strategic core" of the original X-Com games, combining it with the natural intensity of a first-person experience.

"With XCom, 2K Marin will re-imagine and expand the rich lore of this revered franchise," said 2K Games [http://www.2kgames.com/] President Christoph Hartmann. "Players will explore the world of XCom from an immersive new perspective and experience firsthand the fear and tension of this gripping narrative ride."

The timing of the announcement is a bit interesting: Original Irrational Games [http://www.bioshockgame.com/], formerly 2K Boston, which developed BioShock but was uninvolved in the sequel.

And for the record: My heart is aflutter.

XCom is currently in development for the PC and Xbox 360, and no release date has been set. For more information (in the future, because there's not much there right now), keep an eye on XCom.com [http://www.xcom.com/xcom.html].

Meeeeh.... Didn't really quite like the first Bioshock (too close to what System Shock 1/2 was like I thought, and not really even half as fun in my opinion), though I haven't played the second one yet, but now I have to look up XCom to see what it's about >.>

Could be interesting, could be crap.
Just as long as Bethesda keeps it's grubby little bug-ridden hands off another great series *curses them for making Fallout such a faulty mess*

Oh great I was just saying what we need is more FPSs. In fact what we need is to take really under developed stategy games and turn them into FPSs

I want my squad based narrative journey

I will be fair on this one. I will not jump on the bandwagon until I know it has wheels. My initial reaction is to say that I'm disappointed with turning X-Com into FPS, but at the same time I said the same about Fallout 3 and I ended up being pleasantly surprised. I highly doubt this will be as good as the original, just like Fallout 3 wasn't as good as the first two, but Fallout 3 was awesome on its own merits, and maybe this can be, too.

Rebelstar: Tactical Command for the GBA is the closest thing to XCOM now...

PLAY IT! NOW!

I'll wait and see how this turns out before passing judgment though.

Mine too [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/5379-Review-X-Com-Revival-Package], let's hope they do it justice.

Damnit! I saw the title and flew in here only to find out they're just making it an FPS? I don't think I've ever said this before, but 2k Marin, you're just wrong, don't do that. We've been wanting a real x-com game for a very, very long time now (top town turn based tactical). Why do you torment us?!?

They are going to turn it into a console fps? God forbid you actually have to use your brains while playing games.

Ehh.....For a second I was all excited. While I'm happy to see Xcom get rebirthed, a FPS is not really what I had wanted to see it become. I'll remain skeptical but in the meantime I'll find a bundle pack on steam of all the originals....even the space sim and 3rd person games........ewww.

Oh look, another FPS! As if FPS haven't been dime a dozen for the past ten years!

What the hell are they thinking? FBI agent? Rich lore? Gripping narrative ride? There wasn't even any lore worth speaking of until Apocalypse!

Dear god, has making good turn-based strategies suddenly become rocket science? Seriously, I want to scream in rage and punch random people right now.

I really really wish I could say the same, but I am still hurting after Enforcer. So while I'll look forward to seeing what it ends up with I'll be a pessimist about it. I couldn't stand to be disappointed with something as awesome as X-com.

Incidentally I love your avatar root. Blink is perhaps my favourite episode of the new series. So far at least.

Enforcer was ... different. I'll struggle to say anything better

Ta, Dontblink was a little miffed at me though, so maybe a change soon :)
(And you know they're coming back I assume...)

X-Com + classic does not equal a f***ing shooter! If it is a tactical "RPG" strategy game like the first two (or three) x-coms, then I will jump over it like a starved wolf, but if they make a shoot out of it they can really keep it all to themselves!

My crack-tasticly favorite game of all time re-imaged by one of my favorite design companies? Well, one of two outcomes will occur:

A) It'll be eye-ball peelingly good and I can devote a major portion of my waking hours to it; or
B) They screw it up royally and I'll need to burn their offices/homes/pets to the ground.

I'm hoping for outcome A.

And after looking at the website, they're saying it'll be a first-person "perspective." Dollars to donuts, they'll be doing it like Battlezone - where you played an RTS from the first-person POV.
