If what's in the news is something I haven't already heard enough of before in the past, then yes. Other than that, when news has only JUST broken I can understand completely why there would be 1hr long specials devoted to it especially in regards to a natural disaster that is currently affecting many lives. The only time I even pay attention to the news these days is when something big has occurred.

You can't ignore the rest of the world just because this has just happened, I would have had no idea that Libya had started bombing their own people in air-raids had it not been for my curiousity in the other world affairs. Surely a country using it's own Air Force, bombing it's own populace and taking the death toll to over 1000 warrant some air time?

Mmm. I saw this on the news this morning. Seems fairly minor; relatively little loss of life.

Consider that in terms of percentage of the population of the city and that's like 2,000 people dying if it was in Los Angeles. So it's not completely insignificant. Also the CBD has now been destroyed as was still recovering from the 7.1 September 4th earthquake. You shouldn't be so casual about deaths when people on this board know people who have died. Unless of course you want the same level of respect sent your way.

I live in southern California, an area fairly well known for it's quakes. I was a tad bit surprised at how much damage was done by a quake only on the top end of mediocre. I might be a bit biased, and the structures we build here are pretty dang good against Earthquakes because of their commonality.

I hope they manage to recover okay, but I don't doubt they will.

New Zealand happens to be a close nation to us, it's air time is going to be a hell of a lot more than Libya's unfortunately and I don't just watch the news, I read it too. You go online and you'll find there are actually more news stories being put through that you see on TV. And as much as I feel for Libya at the moment I still care more about what is happening over in New Zealand. That's me personally, I won't speak for others.

I said 'of the city'. The city. I know the population of New Zealand thank you. I live here. You know almost everyone I've ever encountered on the Escapist have been nice and civil people who occasionally might overstep the mark and be a dick, but at least know when they have. Until now of course. I was only asking you not to be so casual about the deaths out of respect for those of us on the board who know people who died. I guess you deal with death by trying to trivialise it. That's fine, but why do you feel the need to do it in front of other people who are still trying to deal with their loses? Does that make you feel even better? Yes millions die around the world every year. As we all will. So let's try to be a little nicer to each other while we are here.

I don't trivialize death 'to deal with it'. I guess that's where we see things differently; I think death is trivial, especially on the small scale like this. I see it as part of course, something to be expected and something that happens so often around the world that it simply cannot be shocking. If there weren't hundreds of millions starving to death and laying in ruble as we speak, then death of this nature would be something alien and ghastly. But we all have different tolerance to things and we all perceive the value of some to be greater or lesser than we do others. Funny how it's our universal similarities that make us different.

Cancer is one of the biggest killers in Australian people, yet when I received the news that my grandfather was dying of Cancer back in 2003 it was the biggest shock to my system. I guess I should have expected it to happen hey, considering my grandmother was a heavy smoker...that is, going by what you have just said. It might be your opinion, but death is no trivial matter and if you find it so easy to perceive as trivial then it is my opinion that there is something wrong with you. Take it as you will, but I find your opinion to be rather insulting personally.

so 145 dead and rising is a minor loss of life???
I was in it. We lost lots of glasses and fine china and a massive valve radio fell fight where i was standing. we have had no water or sewage and we only got power on this morning and we're getting aftershocks all the time a 5 day national state of emergency has been declared and a third of the CBD has been damaged so the term fairly minor is fucking insulting
