Next Planet of the Apes Movie Gets Most Surprising Name Ever

The third Planet of the Apes movie will have a name that nobody could have possibly predicted.

Warning: Minor spoilers ahead.

On the off chance that you hadn't heard, the new <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/rise%20of%20the%20planet%20of%20the%20apes?os=rise+of+the+planet+of+the+apes>Planet of the Apes are pretty good. Granted, it doesn't take much to make an awesome movie about intelligent apes fighting humans. They were able to do it the 1960s with hammy acting and rubber masks. That said, there are many who consider the new Apes to be legitimately good films and, in turn, are eagerly awaiting the series' continuation after the less than happy ending of <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/dawn%20of%20the%20plant%20of%20the%20apes?os=dawn+of+the+plant+of+the+apes>Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Now, its creators may have made a small step toward making the next movie a reality. Namely, they've named it.

And what will the title of the next Apes movie be, you ask? According to reports, the new chapter in the Apes film saga will be titled War of the Planet of the Apes. If that seems at all obvious, it's probably just because it's incredibly appropriate given the hostile state of the world at the end of Dawn. Discussing the franchise's third film in an interview last year, Dawn director Matt Reeves indicated that War of the Planet of the Apes would focus on Andy Serkis's character Caeser "becoming the ape Moses" and his struggle to lead his people through their intensifying conflict with the human race.

Speaking personally, I have to say that I didn't like Dawn of the Planet of the Apes as much as some <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escape-to-the-movies/9538-Dawn-of-the-Planet-of-the-Apes-Apes-With-Machine-Guns>other people did. Too many of its human characters struck me as being too stupid for their own good. That said, the sequences focused on Caeser and his tribe of intelligent apes were still quite fantastic and I look forward to seeing how things have changed for that character and where his journey takes him in this evolving and expanding reboot.

War of the Planet of the Apes is set to hit theaters on July 14th, 2017.

I wouldn't mind seeing more of Caeser salad and watching Andy Serkis totally own that role.

I dont think they really should do it, the old one still holds up and all these movies need to do is tie with the beginning of the original, something that so far all of them did. In the end they are unnecessary but interesting as they simply focus on the important moments in between our days and the Planet of the Apes future.

It never seemed that they were trying to reboot or remake the story but just tell what could have happened in between what we already knew.

I love these Planet of the Apes remakes, on face value they look like the exact kind of thing Hollywood would crap out for a quick buck but they've ended up being one of the more enjoyable films one can watch nowadays. The second one had a surprising amount of depth and heart to it, heck I was impressed that they didn't go the Avatar root and make humans completely evil, instead opting to have both sides be both bad and good.

So yeah, looking forward to be pleasantly surprised by this as well.

First quibble: it's Caesar. Like the emperor. Second quibble: the third Planet of the Apes movie got a title in 1971. This will be the eighth. Quibble three: that title isn't surprising in the least; almost anything would be more so. "Citizen Kane 2", for example. Or "The Bible: the Lost Chapters".

We had a remake in 2001; it wasn't very good. More to the point, I think it's generally well-understood that this is supposed to be a reboot; the original series established that the events of the time-hopping changed the original timeline; if this is building up to another POTA-type world, it would be a second rise of the NHAs- which raises some disturbing questions about the inevitability of humans being overthrown.

There'd not be a lot of point remaking Planet of the Apes - the ending is one of the most famous twists in cinema and its so well known now that there really wouldn't be any point doing the whole astronauts landing on 'a mysterious planet' shtick again. Tim Burton tried to do it, but knew he couldn't just repeat the ending again. If we get enough of these films they'll eventually get to the future and have something happen - humans fighting back against ape oppressors probably, but for the moment I think is just a case of Humans vs Apes is a really cool premise for a series of action movies.
