Next Zelda Game Will Be on Grand Scale

Zelda director Eiji Aonuma claims that he and his team failed to realize its goal with Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, but will learn from those mistakes for the next installment.

Twilight Princess might have been a big hit with critics, but series director Eiji Aonuma was unhappy with it, claiming that it failed to live up to what he had in his head while he was making it: "For Twilight Princess we used the adult Link and one of the interesting things about that was how we considered the precise proportions of Link and the world. The scale is because we aimed for a more realistic quality in the size of the environments of Hyrule and what that Link faced."

"But the question is whether or not we were able to incorporate any and all of the interesting game ideas that were able to take advantage of that kind of sheer grand scale within the Zelda universe. I am afraid that definitely no, we were not able to do all the things that perhaps with hindsight we had the capabilities to do," he added.

Aonuma compared the task of creating Twilight Princess with the most recent Zelda game, Spirit Tracks, saying that in the DS title, his team was free to explore the various ideas they had, without worrying about the realism factor. Aonuma made it clear however that he would not repeat his mistake with the follow up and planned to build on: "With [ Twilight Princess ] as the starting point, we are now developing the Wii version of Legend Of Zelda."

So is there ever going to be any real news on this game I wonder? Like what it's going to be about and such.

If Twilight Princess was a failure, I wish I had the ability to fail and still make one of the best games ever. I'm already looking forward to the next title, but this makes it sound like they could surpass everything they've done so far.

"Grand Scale" could mean hundreds of things.

Regardless, if it has the same sort of gameplay/style we've been seeing from recent Zelda titles I will probably grab it & enjoy it.

Maybe being a huge Zelda fan (and a big Twilight Princess fan) has caused me to become delusional, but Aonuma isn't saying that he thought Twilight Princess was bad, only that it didn't live up to his original expectations, or the implied scale of the character's realistic proportions.

Almost every site I've seen this story on has reported it as 'Aonuma dissapointed by Twilgiht Princess, will try better next time', but that's not really what he's saying.

"Grand scale" Means nothing what so ever, it would be nice if they gave it context e.g 2X the size of Windwaker or something.

May be its a secret code that the McGuffin of this game is actaully a scale, its the only object they havnt used.

Aw, c'mon Aonuma, at least drop some hints as to what the game is going to be about. I'm getting sick of this non-news about the next LoZ.

Link needs to fight in an epic Fantasy battle. Something LotR-sized, but not too similar so the deja vu doesn't screw up our perception of the game.

Awesome. We know nothing more, but we already knew that we wouldn't know anything more until some gigantic release where they tell us more and show us something more than a picture. Splendid. And the thought of a Metroid-esque exploration theme in a Zelda title intrigues me. I know, it may not have been mentioned as such, but that's what came to mind. Or, maybe, something even more epic...

Which acronym are you using there? TBS could mean anything.

Turn-Based Strategy. That's what I think, at least, and I can't imagine having much fun with that.
