Sony - Pissing in the faces of their fanbase over and over again for years now.
Here, they managed, to wipe out most of their nigerian supporters in one sentence.

Why cant they just go back to making TV's? They were ok at that... but once they got the notion that they knew something about gaming...

Anyway, whats up with all the comments about sony being racist?

Sony arent bad people, they're just a bit thick.

and maybe nigerians are over-reacting a tad.

Sigh, this is whats wrong with the world. Here Nigeria is trying to get some attention with this lame excuse for an offense. I guess no one can take a joke these days...

Honestly, I find the stupid 'PlayStation' bit at the end of their adverts more annoying than their casual racism.
Also, while i found this hilarious, we don't recognize racism in America anymore; we have a black president remember? lol

Don't listen to them, Sony! They're not really mad at you, they're just trying to scam an apology out of you. Set your spam blocker to filter out "demands for apology" and you should be fine.

If you are going to pick a state pick one that people might care about ;).

Although that was an informative lesson in Nigeria (weird to learn something on the escapist).

I wish the story had been about Kenya so I could have made a District 9 joke :(.

I suppose I'll run with "First District 9 in Kenya, now THIS!"
You really shouldn't, because District 9 is not set in Kenya. It's painfully obviously set in South Africa, and the plot is a science-fiction mirror of apartheid and an actual forced relocation from 'District 6'. The director is from South Africa, it was filmed on location in South Africa (specifically Johannesburg, which itself should be a tip-off considering you're dealing with Africa), and the main character might as well be walking around with a sign that says "I'm from South Africa!" the instant he opened his mouth (see also: His NAME).

How is it even possible to think District 9 was about Kenya?!!

So yeah, don't go around saying that or people will laugh at you for being astoundingly mistaken.

Back on topic: Face it Nigeria, it's far far too late to distance your country from 'Nigerian Scammers', you will forever be known for that and pretty much nothing else.

Who in Nigeria was actually offended by that? It should be pretty well-known that nearly all spam scams come from "Nigerian princes".

Meh...

It's not a dig at the nation of nigeria, and it's not racist. It's a dig at a very well-known internet scam. He might as well have said, "You shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet, or I'd have a johnson the size of an energy drink can." But I suppose that would enrage the ever-important weiner market. They're sensitive, you know.

Sony should say they would offer 150 million US DOLLARS restitution, but the nigerian government needs to provide money for legal costs and administration fees first, to the tune of a few mill.
Nothing else needs to be said really.

If the Nigerian government is so pissed about it maybe they should do something about the scammers.

Oh come on. Has the world gone mad? People find something as insignificant as that offensive? The truth is, Nigeria is an internet scammer hotspot and nothing the Nigerian government say is going to change that. What ever happened to freedom of speech?

Here's the problem with Nigeria not wanting to be seen as a country of criminals and scam artists: thats all it is.

yes, yes I know, not EVERY nigerian is a worthless thug or internet scammer, just like not EVERY WW2-era german was a nazi, but a few examples of good human beings is not enough. The fact of the matter is nigeria is filled with crime.

but more to the point, the nigerian govt has no leg to stand on when it asks for an apology. Scams involving nigeria are incredibly prevalent and its something almost everyone has een bothered with personally. I myself (if everything on the internet were true) would have 3 million dollars and a shiny new boat.

Nigeria has internet?!

On a serious note, I think it's stupid for them to demand an apology, their country got made fun of, join the club.

Dear Nigeria:

Americans get made fun of being beer-swilling, bible thumbing, morbidly obese morons. Brits are snobby, stuck up ugly elitists with bad teeth, Japanese are fetish ridden, insane pervent, Australians are foster drinking rednecks who can barely speak, Mexicans live entirely in America selling and cutting weeds, and Arabs are all terrorists. No, none of those previous statements are true, but I easily recognize every one as a common, well recognized myth. Welcome to the real world. People make fun of each other for gross over-generalizations and misrepresentations, ones which are in no way accurate, but are easy for the public to latch on to. If Sony were to change there business model for Nigeria, or otherwise treat you differently, then that would be a problem. But if they rib you a little with a cliche joke, while completely understanding that its an over-simplification, then you need to man up, shake it off and laugh with the rest of the big boys.

However, if you still have a serious problem with this, then transfer 5 million dollars to this bank account to handle expenses, and I will totally make it all disappear for you.

Yeah their still using that japanese Child(?) saying PUREISUTESHON. But I've gotten used to that and it's nostalgic and crap.

BTW all you dummies need to get a dictionary and actually look up 'racism'. You'll find it is NOT synonymous with 'Stereotype'.

konno aho.

Nigerian official: greedy marks as guilty as 419 scammers

Have you, or anyone you know, ever fallen for a Nigerian 419 scam? If so, you deserve to be jailed just as much as the scammers, according to Nigerian high commissioner Sunday Olu Agbi. Just stop being so greedy so Nigeria can restore its reputation.

http://arstechnica.com/security/news/2008/08/nigerian-official-greedy-marks-as-guilty-as-419-scammers.ars

Nigerians didn't actually invent the Nigerian 419 scam; variations of it seem to predate the nation's existance. My grandfather got a letter from someone in Mexico who wanted him to bring ten thousand dollars to get a person out of prison, who would then share hundreds of thousands of dollars with him (he ignored it). This was just after World War II.

I dont think an apology is in order because it is most likely a factual statement.

The term "Nigerian Scammer" is a commonly used term.
While not even most of these people actually ARE from Nigeria, they claim to be, so saying "I´d be a Nigerian Millionair by now." only implies the horrific bad reputation Nigeria takes from these spammers, and is totally not an attack against Nigeria.

Also, why are people all of a sudden totally patriotic about their country? American "democracy" spreading finaly?
Next there will be a movie about Iraq and the Iraq government will be pissed that it portrays them in bad light?
Hey there´s an AIDS campaign featuring friggin Hitler of all people, saying "AIDS is a mass murderer!".
Even THAT generated alot of stupid comentary and critique by us germans of all people...
