Night of Gaming With Convict Forces Judge Off Bench

A judge that got caught being videogame buddies with a criminal offender has oddly abandoned his post.

In a somewhat mysterious story this week, a Virginia circuit court judge has left his seat following a car accident which occured as he was giving a gaming buddy a ride home. The gaming buddy happened to be a defendant that the judge had sentenced multiple times in the past.

40-year-old circuit judge Joseph R. Carico swerved to avoid a deer and crashed his SUV into a tree while passenger Jeremy Hubbard was in the car. Hubbard has appeared in front of Carico for shoplifting and drug charges.

The two were reportedly exhausted after a night of playing Xbox 360 [http://www.amazon.com/Halo-3-Xbox-360/dp/B000FRU0NU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1277676266&sr=8-1]," Hubbard revealed.

The strange part is that Carico appears to have abandoned his post on his own, rather than having been forced off of it. A year prior to the crash, Carico filed to be taken off of a case involving Hubbard due to a conflict of interest, so the two had probably been videogame pals for quite some time.

Carico may be embarrassed by his now public connection to a convicted criminal, but it's not like the two were doing blow in the bathroom of a nightclub. They were just having a good time with Master Chief and their Miis.

Sadly, the one-time buds have lost touch since the incident. Carico could not be reached for comment so the situation remains enigmatic for now. Was it really that embarrassing to be caught with a videogame buddy?

VIDEO GAMES: They corrupt the law!

Soon Bush will blame the Iraq war on "Being distracted by too much Call of Duty"

Then historical evidence will be found which suggest that the Nazi's were trying to develop video game platforms to brainwash the people of Germany.

And as a final nail in the coffin, a lost Bible will be found that explicitly tells the tale of how Satan betrayed God because of a dispute over Xbox live.

I'm astonished such a thing could possibly happen.
And with no-one finding out either.

Clip is unrelated.

It is a strange series of events. What I find most surprising is that they were good friends despite previous rulings.

Without knowing all the details of the cases that involved Carico presiding over with Hubbard being defendant, it's hard to determine where they stood. But as far as I am concerned if Hubbard did his time by the time the two were hanging out then there should't be any big deal. Otherwise one may as well say judges can't mingle with anyone other than fellow legal authorities. Which is screwed up in its own right.

I don't understand the problem. Unless I read it wrong, the judge had found him guilty..so..It's not like it was unfair influence and the judge kept letting him off..

He should have just swallowed his pride and stayed on the bench. It looks a bit odd that he was playing games with someone he had judged before but it really is nothing. This sounds kind of like he was up to more than is being said since no one could view a judge playing games that poorly as to give him the necessity to resign. Weird (yet entertaining) stuff.

Ey, the epileptic picture is back with a conspiracy...hmm

Seriously though, I see nothing wrong with this, appearantly there has been no under the table deals since he's been sentenced everytime.

What's wrong with judge to be gaming buddy with a petty criminal? Just shoplifting(who knew shops were that heavy..) and some drugs, could've been worse..just saying.

It's not surprising he abandoned his post, that is pretty embarrassing.

It's one thing to play videogames with a criminal, but a criminal that you have sentenced!?

That is no doubt going to send him into a tailspin when people start questioning whether he has done this in the past, or has ruled on criminal cases while under a conflict of interests.

Video games can bring anyone together. Judges and criminals. Mail men and dogs. BP employees and hippies. Even Jack Thompson can't resist a good game of MW2 on high rise.

But what were the two REALLY doing the night of the accident?
Kitten huffing...

I'm guessing it was to avoid the appearance of impropriety... but it's a bit late for that.

Well, I don't see what the problem is. The judge obviously cares about upholding the law if he specifically requested in the past to be taken off a case involving his gaming buddy in order to maintain impartiality. Fair play to the guy, I say. Don't really see why he felt the need to quit his job, to be honest. I call shenanigans...

Eh he probably didn't want to bother with all the media uproar that would be likely to happen. Or something.

On story - Awww, how sweet. That's all I can say. It's awesome.
