Nightcrawler Returns In X-Men: Days of Future Past

Good news for fans of Alan Cumming and demon fetishists everywhere: The thespian will once again portray Nightcrawler in the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past.

When X-Men: Days of Future Past hits theaters next year it will serve two purposes. First, as you'd expect, it stands as a sequel to the surprisingly good X-Men: First Class. We all knew that coming in, but what has only recently emerged is evidence that the film will also be something of a reunion for a huge number of the prior decade's cinematic X-Men. We've known for quite a while that Hugh Jackman would appear as Wolverine, and we recently brought you word [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/122493-Halle-Berry-Returns-As-Storm-In-X-Men-Days-Of-Future-Past] that Halle Berry will also reprise her role as Storm. As of this morning, we've also learned that Alan Cumming will once again don the blue makeup and prehensile tail he wore as Nightcrawler in X2.

In an interview with the UK's Heat Radio, X-Men: First Class star James McAvoy (he played the young Charles Xavier) accidentally let slip the news of Cumming's involvement. While discussing the film's cast, McAvoy stated, "... Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Halle Berry, Alan Cumming, Peter Dinklage I hear mentioned -- I don't know if that's happening -- 'Huge' Jackman is coming by, he's massive, 7'5″ and muscly." All of those names were known to the public to be involved with this movie, with the exception of Cumming whose appearance in Days of Future Past has long been speculated on by fans.

The only question now is how Cumming's Nightcrawler might fit into the story. The idea of bringing back all the older X-Men should work out nicely given the time-hopping plot of the comic book tale the film is based on, but unless I'm completely misremembering a childhood wasted on Marvel's books, Nightcrawler wasn't a huge part of the Days of Future Past storyline. If anything, this appears to simply be an attempt to wink and nod at fans of the previous X-Men films. Whether that appeals to you or not depends on how well you liked those movies, but if that's the sole reason for including Cumming in the cast, we'd rather they just leave him out.

Then again, at this rate Days of Future Past will be populated almost entirely by the cast of the older X-Men movies. On the one hand, that means that Vinnie Jones' terrible Juggernaut might appear in the movie. On the other, it means that Vinnie Jones will actually be getting work outside of direct to video sequels to terrible action movies and British talk shows. Fingers crossed that it works out this way, as no one should have to spend that much time with Graham Norton.

I'm pretty sure he wasn't in X-men: The Last Stand.

Wikipedia agrees with me, but, I'll take that with a grain of salt.

Anyway, he was fantastic in X2. Probably the most notable character outside the main cast.

I'd imagine his presence might tie-in to the Azrael-Mystique relationship that will inevitably happen somehow.

You know. Cause he's their SON and all =D

The comic book story deals with characters traveling from the future. X2 was, in fact, 10 years ago! It will be helpful for the cast of X2 to be playing themselves from some time in the future, visiting First Class types in the 1960s, early 1970s.

He wasn't, the director of X3 said himself that he chose not to include the character because make up would take too long and cost too much. Basically he's kinda shit.

Since when has Vinnie Jones been getting loads of work on "British talk shows"?

Do they just plain make things up now? Isn't he now working as a Football analyst for Fox? I'm no fan of the guy but if your going to rip on him at least do it right.

To be fair to the director, something that I don't usually do for X3...

The issue, from what I understand, was that most of Nightcrawler's role in the third movie was cut as the script got revised repeatedly. When his role got too small, they decided that the makeup cost too much for the amount of screen time that he had, and cut him entirely. There were also concerns that his story overlapped too much with Beast's.
Yeah, toward the end the character was going to be in little more than the Xavier funeral scene. But I have to say, script wise, nightcrawler should have been prioritized over introducing a new character, rather than just throwing the character away entirely abandoning his story arc before it even ended. But a director doesn't write the script.

Who is this we you mentioned? As far as I can tell, most poeple like the idea of Nightcrawler coming back.

It was a dig at Graham Norton.

But yes, the rest of you are correct. Nightcrawler wasn't in X3. Good for him. I'll amend the article.

That would be the collective "we," referring primarily to myself and the people I represent. Sorta like the royal we, only not as high falutin.

The movie continuity is so incredibly differant from the comics that any arguements based on the comic storylines at this point are kind of silly. To be honest I'm surprised that they would even bother to use the name "Days Of Futures Past" at this point, or that it would psyche anyone up knowing that they cannot do anything that will even approach the depth and quality of the classic storyline since a movie simply can't deal with that much backstory and decades worth of continuity coming to one of it's bigger climaxs.

It's sort of like if they announced they were going to make a movie out of "Age Of Apocolypse", which was pretty much only cool for huge fans of the source material.... though to be honest I *would* find it kind of cool to see if they could do "Sugar Man" without resorting to dodgy CGI. I'm probably alone, but I thought he was cool in a rather disturbing way, and it was clever how he was brought into the main continuity afterwards. :)

I seem to recall, along with many other folk, that Nightcrawler wasn't in the 3rd film lol...

but the new X-Men movie really is turning into a reunion :/ it was cool at first, but once they went beyond Professor X and Magneto it got a bit weird haha...
