Elusive?
Don't people even keep those as pets?
They will also not "attack anything they encounter", they're actually rather benign and only look terrifying.
Indeed. I was about to say that I know several people who have them. They aren't that uncommon, since although they aren't particularly pretty colour-wise, they are pretty fucking huge and impressive.

If I had woken up and seen that spider right next to me, the next few seconds would have resulted in a very high pitched scream of terror, a very dead spider and me running to the hills as fast as my legs can carry me.

I can cope with smaller spiders, even when they catch me by surprise (and have even tried to help a friend out with his arachnophobia in the past, which is so bad that even a DRAWING of a spider can set his phobia off (no, I'm serious: I can't use Maexxna or Spectral Creeper in Hearthstone against him because he's that scared of spiders that those set off his arachnophobia!)), but one that big? Not a chance in hell! You'd have more luck getting me to sing soprano...and I'm saying that as a guy who has a voice that can go down to a pitch that you'd expect from Christopher Lee or James Earl Jones!

EDIT: Forgot to mention: my friend's arachnophobia is actually a bit worse than I originally said, as even mentioning them results in him angrily demanding their complete destruction. I learnt this the hard way when trying to discuss Doctor Who's "Kill The Moon" with him and pointing out that spraying a spider with something designed to kill germ wouldn't kill it, but would most likely cause it to suffer chemical burns AND anger it enough to have a reason to attack you. I would carry on from there, but I'd be going very off topic and would almost certainly descend into a very angry rant related to that episode, so I'll stop before I get started with that!

Still, the spider doesn't post a threat to humans.
I believe you mean the spider doesn't *pose* a threat.
Nah, he was just saying that spiders have the sense to stay out of the whole gamersgate thing.

Those are actually fairly popular pets.
(They need high humidity though, I believe and are tricky because of that)

Their venom isn't particularly powerful, but their urticating bristles are sort of bad. (Or so I hear, never had one)

So...

Not the scariest thing in the world.

Looks like we'll need the Sunday edition!

Also the eye thing seems extremely painful. Did they take it as a specimen or just leave it to chill?

That is one cute spider.

What a cool pet that would be.
What's stopping you from getting one?
Living on a uni campus that doesn't allow pets and having to buy an exotic animal license. Also importing could be expensive considering I live in Australia.

Ah, Australia.

Unless things have changed in the few years I've been less active in the tarantula hobby, getting spiders from abroad is next to impossible in Australia.
At least you have your own species hobbyists in other countries have trouble getting.

Are you sure I can't have it as a pet? I mean, I really love its mane fangs...

Other than that, I'll get more damage from a chicken than from that spider?! *remembers LttP* Yeah, I can see your point...

You know these kinds of articles just make you think of just how badass humans really are. Even the worlds biggest spider is merely a scientific interest to us now.

'Huge spider? LOL I've seen it three times already. Get the cage out. I wanna play with it!'

'Massive elephants? Oh look, pretty ivory! Kill them all.'

'Army ants? Cool! I wanted an excuse to use the flamethrower.'

Don't put your hand near it you stupid idiot!

I swear if that thing was within five feet of me I'd scream like a four year old girl.

It's worth mentioning that they're not that aggressive, as far as tarantulas go anyway.

As an arachnophobic I just threw up in my mouth a little bit watching that.

This is true, I'll probably just get a slightly smaller locally bred spider once I get a place.

I have seen tarantulas in my locale reptile shop for sale, and I live in Australia. You need a permit or licence or something to buy one though. They are big, but not as big as that guy in the video.

No way it's legs would be "up to one foot in length". Sounds like you're getting confused with legspan.

Was my initial thought, too.
Small spiders can go screw themselves, but these large fuzzy bastards?
Adorable~
