Ninja Assassin: Dumb Name, Kickass Movie?

Though it's undeniably saddled with a title befitting a Michael Dudikoff film circa 1987, the debut trailer for Ninja Assassin hints that the final film may be a return to form for Larry and Andy Wachowski, the production duo responsible for 1999's The Matrix.

Further enhancing the comparison to any number of 80s-era ninja-sploitation flicks is a plot synopsis that reads like an amalgam of every beat-em-up, fighting game and Shinobi sequel ever made:

Ninja Assassin follows Raizo (South Korean pop star-turned-actor Rain), one of the deadliest assassins in the world. Taken from the streets as a child, he was transformed into a trained killer by the Ozunu Clan, a secret society whose very existence is considered a myth. But haunted by the merciless execution of his friend by the Clan, Raizo breaks free from them and vanishes. Now he waits, preparing to exact his revenge.

As with most tales of hyper-masculine men however, Raizo's revenge gets a bit muddled when he stumbles upon a pretty girl and she falls into the tangled web he calls his life. Being smitten and all, Raizo feels responsible for his new lady friend and finds himself defending her from the cabal of ninja killers he'd been plotting to kill all along.

Quite convenient, huh?

Honestly, at this point I'm not sure if I'm being sarcastic about this whole thing or if I actually think it's a great throwback to an earlier, more violent era. I only know that that debut trailer up there was awesome and Rain could beat the faces off of our wildly inferior American pop stars.

In all truth I'm really only going to get a first look at what innovative visual technology other filmmakers are going to steal from the Wachowski's latest for use in the next decade of action flicks. Kind of a "I saw it before it became mainstream" ideal, only way geekier than if it were applied to a rock band.

Funny that I was thinking the same thing about the name. If you think that a Pop Star can't be an action star, take a look at this guy without clothes:

The guy puts those certain Greek Army soldiers who shall not be named and their CG abs to shame! And he's not even killing stuff!

The movie looks pretty cool, even though it may have one of the dumbest sounding titles in movie history.

Ninja is basically the Japanese word for assassin so it's a really stupid name but I dunno I suppose Rain at least looks the part.

Even if it's awful, I'll go watch it, just because of it's awful b-movie like name, man I love those "so-bad-they-are-good" films.

Hmmm, well I feel a bit insulted over a minor point. :)

I love 80s action movies and really think we need to get back to that, I still watch a lot of them today, and kind of feel people have lost sight of what it is to make a decent action movie or even a reasonably good horror flick (I personally tout "A Nightmare On Elm Street" as the greatest horror series in history as it featured what was a unique protaganist for the time, and even when the concept was being stretched they used what were some amazingly good effects and visuals for the time. Robert Englund even got his own TV series which while lacking in quality at times expands the mythos... it's shown on Chiller right now. But this isn't about Horror).

The big problem I see with this movie is that it's starring a Korean playing a Ninja. Don't get the wrong impression, I have nothing wrong with Koreans, but the Japanese in general do. People look at the atrocities committed against Whites and Chinese during World War II but the Japanese were just as bad to the Koreans who were another race of "dancing monkeys emulating real people". There was a Manga called "Island" that went into some detail on the subject in historical afterwards attached to the story.

The thing is that the Japanese being very racist aren't just going to recruit anyone to join these brotherhoods of Ninja Assasins, and really getting a Korean to do it is exactly the same thing as trying to justify a white ninja (unless of course it's the "Legendary White Ninja" Chris Farley never needed any justification for anything... Lol).

I sort of suspect we're dealing with a situation where they figure they can cast any Asian in any role and us Westerners will never figure it out. Truth is I can tell some of the groups apart, but have trouble myself. BUT I sort of go "what??" when I hear right from the beginning that they are casting a Korean pop star and I can't help but wonder if they are going to make a big deal out of him being Korean (which might be missed to the mainstream American Audience even if they don't understand the minor physical differances) or if (much more likely) we're going to have him be presented as a Japanese street waif.

We'll have to see what happens, the movie has potential even with that title. I have my concerns about the Warshowski brothers being involved in any project ever again. Towards the end it seemed to be a bigger deal that one of them was cross dressing and dating a dominatrix, and then well... with that going on we saw what happened with the Matrix movies themselves. Makes me wish they spent more time writing/directing than goofing off with the press (irregardless of their lifestyle choices).

It looks pretty good. The only thing that could ruin it for me is if they throw in a really stupid plot and spend 3/4 of the film explaining it in a really boring way that makes no sense. But, what are the chances of that...
FUCK!

This looks really silly but also looks like it'll be a hell of a lot of fun to watch. A return to the silly ninja flicks of the eighties with updated modern sensibilities. Also it looks like the action will be quite creative, which is always a plus in any film.

Is it just me or does this look like a movie based off Ninja Gaiden? plot is no where near it but the whole thing kinda has that over the top bad ass ninja feel to it that i cant help but think the producers really just wanted to do a Ninja Gaiden film without obtaining the rights to the name....

and i dont think this is a harken back to the old nija films of the 80's. i love those movies (Iron Monkey and Legend of the Drunken Master, alnog with most bruce lee films being my favs), and this just looks like new style "Action" bs that they tried with the DB and Street Fighter movies....

As long as they keep the talky talky parts to a minimum and just keep the action flowing I'll watch.

I think that's called race bending and I have seen worse, Dragon Ball Z comes to mind.

I don't think Japanese will get too miffed since I have seen Japanese movies starring Chinese actors playing Japanese, Initial D live action movie for example. I grew up on Hong Kong films and you will see a lot of Japanese and Korean actors playing Chinese. I once saw a Vietnamese flick called Cyclo where one of the key roles was played by Tony Leung, famous for Hard Boiled, who is Chinese.

BZZT!!

The American pop-culture has fooled you. Don't worry, millions before, millions after you.

Ninjutsu means "art of stealth", or "skill/technique of stealth". Ninja is a hidden warrior, more precisely nin - hidden, ja - person. Hidden person. Shinobi means "to steal away".

No idea where you got the assassin thing.

The film name basically means "Hidden Assassin Guy". Or "Guy, the Hidden Assassin" xd

That's exactly what I was thinking.

Anyway, this may very well be a good action movie. I'm not getting my hopes up for it, because in all reality I don't care, but it could make for an interesting rental when it comes out on video.
