It would have been good if they had you know...actually added a western element to him...so far all they've done is make him look just as emo and androgynous as current japanese media calls for.
At most he looks like what most japanese 15 year old girls reading yaoi manga and giggling think a western dude should look.

You can explain it and justify it any way you want, guys. It's your game. Just like it's my right to say that the new design is just plain ugly to me, and in no way whatsoever makes me care more about the character or the game. If anything, it's had the opposite effect.

They can say anything they like, but the fact is that the redesigned Dante looks like he got into a fight at a My Chemical Romance concert after shopping at Hot Topic. I am probably not going to get the game mainly because of DMC4 and now seeing this makes my decision to avoid it even stronger. If they change his look back to one closer to DMC3 then I'll give the demo a try but unless that happens, this fan is a fan no more. Also DMC4 Mission 19 is the DEVIL!

They shouldn't have to defend any changes. It's their intellectual property. If people aren't going to play the game because of "ohhh. He looks stupid." Then I'm sure the developers are thinking "fine, don't play our game." People need to have faith in studios, not all of them are out for a quick buck.
I'm sure no developer is going to think "It's cool if we lose a portion of the fan-base", especially not in these hardened times.
And anyway, regardless of Intellectual Property, the fans have grown to know and love the design of Dante as he was, so these fans may not be so keen to try out this newer Dante.
Plus with the other changes they're making, it's not going to be like the classic DMC's it's riding on to draw fans in.

I do hope it works for them, cos a re-imagining of an old IP is something the market needs.
You know, something fresh.

Jones and Antoniade also pointed out that DmC was an origin story, and so Dante might change over the course of the game, something that may allay some fans' fears.
That's all I needed to hear. You go and do that Ninja Theory. If that will indeed be the case then this is a Day One buy.

"If Dante, dressed as he was, walked into any bar outside of Tokyo, he'd get laughed out,"
-Yeah, as opposed to NOW ...he is SO much cooler now that he looks like he's about to start Cutting himself any minute. I wouldn't be surprised if they even snuck in a Kent or Malboro ad, just to "spice-up" their Revenue ...I mean Gameplay :p

"Ninja Theory creative director Tameem Antoniades, who some have pointed out looks like the new Dante (which he claims wasn't intentional)"
-Oh, NOW things are starting to make Sense. Apparently Ninja Theory's idea of "cool" is inspired from their Boss looking into a Mirror and going: "Nah... I think he needs to look more Emo" >:D

"What Devil May Cry did when it launched was it brought everything that was great about action cinema like the fashion, music -- it was like a cultural melting pot -- and I feel like now, for Devil May Cry to have that same impact, it needs to draw on new things. New music, new ways of cinematography, new fashion."
-Are you Sure this guy's even a Game designer, and not say... one of those cheesy Hollywood agents.
Either-way, I think he's got his Demographics chart upside-down. The DMC Series wasn't created for rich spoiled Emo kids or even the Japanese pop-idol Crowd. If it was, it never would have made it out of Japan to begin with.
No, DMC was made so that Everyone could enjoy it, whether for it's innovative Gameplay, eye-candy Graphics or ...well that's about it.

Speaking of which, when asked about Hideki's newest character Bayonetta, about weather or not he thinks THAT looks cool, he responded:
"Personally, I don't. I love the game. I think it's awesome. It's taken everything -- it's just gone to a total extreme. But in terms of, 'Do I think it's cool?' No, not at all. I think it's caricatured and over-the-top and very 'Japanesey,' and for that absurd style it does that really well, but that's not what I want."
-I Rest my Case :(

[Update]:
" It seems that one of the new things that has inspired Dante's redesign is the recent reboot of the James Bond series."
-Yeah, and everybody just LOVED to see that Movie ...that's why it was a complete box-office Flop.
And calling something from 2006 a "recent reboot" just seems awkward :-/

So people are pissed off about them changing Dante's look? So he looks a little emo who cares? I personally don't see how an emo kid looks any worse than a guy in leather pants, a red leather jacket that's always open with no shirt under, and long white hair. Like really people grow the fuck up.

Sounds to me like you weren't much of a fan to begin with, all you care about is his look? No cares as to how good the story or action will be? that's shallow and sad.
The look is all we know about at the moment. Once we get more info on the personality, then I'll start complaining about or praising the game properly. Also first impressions are the most important and this first impression for DMC is crap. Also I own every DMC game so far and loved the first 3 and liked DMC4 until Mission 19. I hated that mission because it was too time consuming. I hate his new look because all the kids at the shopping centre look like that and I'm assuming Dante's attitude will match theirs like his look does. I hate the kids attitudes today! Also he's original look was very Western so why redesign him for the younger generation?

Please explain this to me, I'm goth as all fucking get out, and I keep hearing people call MCR emo and dissing hot topic all over the place (certainly not the best place for goth ware, but in a pinch it'll do) Now, on more of a point

A lot of the types so willing to dry-hump the anti-emo bandwagon tend to mistake goth and emo because both tend to wear black, have introverted personalities, and are usually quiet, and anyone shallow enough to stay on said bandwagon wouldn't care to educate themselves enough to know the difference.

OT: I for one am loving this new look. Of course, I've never played any of the games, but he just looked like a douche before. A badass douche perhaps, but a douche nonetheless.

He looks a bit dingy but I'm sure he's gonna clean up his act during the game. Either way, it's not as if I really play DMC for the story, so I don't care all that much about how he looks. It all comes down to the same tried-and-true rule of video game character replacements: As long as he kicks as much or more ass than the original Dante then people are going to like him.

Because the long red coat and flowing white locks was really fucking awesome?

Seriously.
DMC fanboys should really hop off the devs nuts, Dante as a character just got more and more pathetic as the sequels churned out.
It seems a little more aggressive, something the game really could have used along time ago.

No, that guy was so wrong.

The new Dante would get his ass laughed out of any bar outside of Tokyo.

The old Dante would prove he belongs in that bar by his actions, making him all the more badass.

Plus, DMC4 Dante would look fine in America if his red jacket was slightly toned down, and you got rid of the red boots or ankle-covers or whatever those are.

This new Dante is not "cool."

What matters most is that Dante's attitude still hasn't changed. They made him look like an emo ass, but can you imagine if they made him act like one? Judging from his actions in the trailer (putting out a cigarette in an enemy's eye, crushing a group with a car) we won't have to worry about it.
