Lord o Lord the stupidity of NT comments on this are mindbogglingly moronic.

Redesign the main character to stroke the ego of a studio lead. Check.
Change the story fundamentals and alienate established themes. Check.
Make a world that looks bland and empty. Check.
Disregard smoothness and reaction ability by reducing frame rate to 30fps. Check.
Be arrogant and dismiss the thoughts of the fans that made the series popular. Check.
Start to pass off blame to Capcom as the ones who approved the changes because NT know it isn't going to do well. Check.

So far it is looking like a recipe for failure. Can someone point out a redeeming quality of what has been shown so far?

30fps.

A gameplay trailer that looks more like God of War than Devil May Cry.

An iconic main character design mangled beyond recognition.

Hmmm. Guess Ninja Theory really hates my money.

That's what my mom used to say when I got picked on at school; "They're just jealous." It makes as little sense now as it did then.

Anyway, let's forget for a moment that Dante looks like Hilary Swank now, and focus on the real problem here: Ninja Theory is making a DMC game! That's right, the studio that made 2 of the most ridgid controlled titles of this generation is developing a game that is famous for it's silky smooth and stylish combat.

I feel that this response to the fans is arogant to the point of total ignorance.
I expect I'll avoid this one as the new Dante looks and acts far too chavy for me to like, and seems to have lost everything that I actually liked about the original Dante.

I'm a fan of Dante's original design but I don't really mind the new one as long as gameplay is solid. The only thing that pisses me off is the lead designer's self-righteusness and overconfidence. And narcissism to some extent.
You see, people have different views of what's 'cool' and what isn't and he just won't admit that his concept of 'coolness' might not correspond with most of the fans. Instead, he claims that everyone's wrong but him. I can't stand this sort of people.

Anyway, I'm willing to give the new game a try. Although I don't think that dressing in random pieces of fabric and cutting your hair in a way that resembles a cross between Robert Pattinson and Marek Hamsik (look it up) makes you cool. I'm going to go ahead and quote Mr. Croshaw here since that's pretty much what I always thought: "A plain black shirt looks cool; a blazer and a tie look cool." If they really need to redefine the very concept of 'coolnes' from what they think was late 90's with first four DMC games to fit the current demographic, I'd suggest dressing dante up in fitting black jeans, a red blazer, a shirt and a loose tie. And keep his hair natural (and preferably white). Then again, that's my idea of what's 'cool', some of you might not agree. But at least it's still true to Dante's original look.

My problem with this game so far is our main character "Angry Kevin" (Until i get some proof this is actually Dante, I'm calling him Angry Kevin..maturity be damned): The body structure is wrong, the hairstyle is wrong, the eye color is wrong (He has blue eyes, not brown/red), the hair color is wrong, even the facial structure is pretty much off. This isn't just 'they gave dante a different hairstyle and outfit', they've completely changed everything about his character to the point that there is nothing that can be seen of what he once was.
How can a reboot, a reboot of which is supposed to change certain aspects of a game to appeal to a broader audience, get things "wrong" when everything is basically up for grabs?

Look, for all we know this game COULD be awesome: Hell, i outright want to like it. But, until we actually get some story/character details shown to the fans and myself...we can't do anything but make use of what we've seen to get an idea of what the games going to be like. Hell, we can't even make up our minds on whether this game is supposed to be a prequel or a reboot!
So it's better to jump to conclusions when we don't have much information to go by rather than be patient and wait for more info to piece up the truth?

It's fine to look at the current evidence, but people are making extremely broad assumptions on the character, personality, visual style, and gameplay based on what amounts to 2 minute of disconnected gameplay. People are going "It's so slow and not stylish at all!" when, at best, we've seen only 6-7 seconds of a full game clip, and trailers are made to emphasize certain parts. Not to mention that this stuff is still in alpha, that's the stage where they add more stuff and tweak things.

Look, I've said it before, and I'll say it as many times as I have to; it's okay to be worried. I understand, hell I even sympathize to an extent, about this thing. It's okay to be worried in the direction the game is going. I get that.

But it is not okay to basically go batshit nuts over this. People are nitpicking in so many unnecessary ways, and the whole attitude towards Ninja Theory, I think, is just disgusting.

But, I didn't think Dante was supposed to be brooding and punk looking. I just thought he was supposed to be cool looking. To me, the new Dante looks like a model who's trying to look punky. He's skinny, has short black hair, smokes and looks like a crack addict.
I dunno, this is the part where personal preference starts muddying things up. I view the old Dante as a weird combination of a pretty-boy model who happens to kick ass, and the current one as an ass-kicker who happens to look slightly effeminate in a gruff body.

That's fine if you're going for that sort of theme in game but... two problems here. One is that Dante was supposed to be a fun character. No real seriousness to it and he's a bit of a goofy sort of character and he knows it. The new one looks like he's trying too hard to be "badass" and the smoking, to me makes it look even worse. Then you make him look hardened and dirtier but somehow still younger just doesn't work for me.
And he may very well still be a fun character. He looks like it, but his actual personality has never been shown. I recall someone showing a screenshot in the previous DMC thread on this where it showed Dante smiling. I dunno if that really helps, but there's more to the character than looks, and that's all we've really seen so far.

Then second... well I covered this but the dark and gritty theme that it looks like they're going for isn't what was prominent in the originals. Yeah, I get that it's a reboot but it looks like all they did was make a game, realise it plays like Devil May Cry and slap the name on it. Same with Heavenly Sword. That game played exactly like God of War and even looked like it. How they got away with that is beyond me >.>
If you are willing, I would recommened to at least try Enslaved, if only to really gauge how NT might approach this (though from what I've seen, the new DMC doesn't seem to be that similar to it). I will say, while it wasn't especially deep or anything, it did have a satisfying feel to it. People are always citing Heavenly Sword, but I find it a bit unfair considering it was a launch title for the PS3 where NT didn't have much experience.

Who knows, third time's the charm?

I'm open to the idea of this but each new bit of footage just lowers my expectations and as I've said, that assclown developer isn't helping at all.
And that is just fine. If the game doesn't look like it'll be good to you, then don't get it, simple as that. Just don't go off saying how the game automatically sucks and how NT should go suck a million dicks for rhuining! the franchise or some BS.

So, from what I've read on this thread so far...

People liked Cheesy dialog? Bad character design?

People are liking flaws in a game? It's a damn shame nobody likes poor controls.

Jumplion, you made some good points there.

Still not really excited for this game, it's not even the design anymore, it's that Ninja Theory seems to not know what its doing and the 30fps thing. We're just going to have to wait till early next year or something... honestly, did you see the Capcom Unity Interview with them? They revealed NOTHING.

my biggest problem so far was that dante smokes, something that he didn't do because the original designer thought i would look like they are trying too hard to make him be cool.
Now it's this.
i didn't mind the redesign so much because until i have a more than vague idea what to expect gameplay and story-wise i will not judge the game.
But the smugness of this comment just pisses me off to no end.

Yeah I can't stand that Ninja Theory thinks that they know what people have on their minds. Of course we want to like the new DMC, I didn't like that they basically said the original games and dante were shit. Also that the artist modeled Dante off himself. Then Ninja Theory isn't known for quality gameplay. To me they Heavenly Sword and Enslaved had bad stories and boring character design. I want to have faith but not when Ninja Theory is involved.

DARK AND EDGY

No one wants this.

What happened to the Dante that would act theatre to taunt his opponent? Or celebrate the killing of a satanfaun beast by making sexual innuendos?

Also, the new plot is that Dante is half demon half angel, which ruins the whole running theme of Dante treasuring his humanity. (His whole reasoning for the villains failing to become gods is because they surrendered their humanity)

I wish this Tameem guy would go play DMC1, 3 and 4 and then think about what he's done

No, haven't seen any interview or whatever. What do you mean by "they revealed nothing", that they just didn't answer any questions or something?

I don't know if the shitty redesign of a great character or the attitude of the developer pisses me off more. Tameem has the biggest ego of anyone in the industry for not only copying his own appearance for the main character or for ignoring the people who he wants to buy the game, but also for telling us that we want to like it.

No, Tameem. I do not want to like it. I will never play it. Even if it has amazing gameplay, I will never play it because the aesthetic is awful and a bastardization of a great series. Oh, and because you're a massive douche.

See people? THIS is exactly why there can never be a remake of FF7, if Square Enix wanted to maintain that particular part of their franchise. The moment they do, everyone will be complaining about every little artistic update. Not that it matters, every single FF7 fanboi would still buy it. Just like every person who's a DMC fan will buy this game, too. It's DMC4 all over again... People say they'll avoid it like the plague, but... well, people are people.

Hold on, isn't this the game where the art designer made the main character look like himself? Hmm, let's see what's going on here...

Honestly, I'm willing to give this a chance.

The main thing I want is the gameplay to feel like Devil may cry. I don't want to have unnecessary plot baggage in the games, when the previous few were more or less simple.

I also want Dante to be Dante. Barring my opinions on the look of the character, I want him to have his classic personality, not too deep and dark, just a guy who loves what he does.

As I said I'm off the fence and more of the side of wanting to like this game. But as others have said, I want to like it because it's devil may cry. But in someways I don't feel like this is devil may cry....

I'll give NT and capcom props for trying a new direction (though considering the series still left mysteries to be resolved, I don't think the reboot was warranted), I only hope that they keep the spirit of the series there.

EDIT: Now that I've confirmed this whole half demon/half angel thing, I can say that I don't really like it, as I feel that the original half demon/half human idea was a good part of Dante's character development as well as a separating point for him and Vergil....AND BY GOD, THEY BETTER NOT GET RID OF VERGIL...

Oh I openly want to like it.
I want to support the FRANCHISE, by showing that these changes to it suck.

I'm still on the fence about this one really, on one hand I loathe the redesign... of not only Dante, but the whole DMC world...

On the other I'm afraid that Capcom might see a boycott as a "we need more redesign"

I'll wait till Capcom releases an HD collection and buy that to show my support. DmC, I'll buy only if it gets stellar reviews.

I wonder what would happen if Devil May Cry 2 and Metroid: Other M had a baby....oh? right its this game.

and I know Other M was made by Team Ninja not Ninja Theory.
