Oh, dear. This wasn't the way to respond to the criticism at all. They should have just said, "they should at least try it first."

Now they just seem arrogant. Pity.

But anyway, no I don't think they're going to ruin it. You can't ruin something in one game, no matter how bad it is. I, as of now, personally think this game has potential to be great but there are a fuckton of elements working against it. If it turns out to be terrible, then oh well. If it's good, then great! Another welcome addition to the DMC franchise. :D
And that's all I ask, really. If it's good/bad it will be due to its own merits.

You know what, I have to say, because now you put that idea in my head http://inception.davepedu.com/ but: I never once considered that someone would actually write worse dialogue than capcom in a DMC game...but now I have...and the future is fucking terrifying.
Like I said, NT is just full of themselves. Maybe if they could back up "serious" with good writing and complex characters they'd have a modicum of something to go on, but ultimately all the characters they've made have far less depth than the DMC series has with the added stupidity of being unlikable. Dante and his cadre were either fun or we liked them due to their personalities and quirks. NT reminds me of a TON of 90s comic writers who tried the dark and dour approaches and ironically came off as more shallow or pretentious.

What broader audience? He's gone from pompous ass-wipe to vomit inspiration. (As in, the very sight of him inspires me to vomit in new ways).
He only seems like a pompous ass-wipe director to the bile-producing "fans".

I agree that there's no point in raging over the ruin of a character that was already terrible, even though I didn't know that was even possible.
So he was never ruined to begin with if he sucked already. No harm no foul.

Ha, no. I tried the Enslaved and Heavenly Sword demos; the latter is a QTE-riddled cluster-fuck brawler while the former is a no-freedom plat-former with sticky controls that completely fails to resemble the Chinese myth that inspired it. I wouldn't trust Ninja Theory to program a game any more than myself.
Ooooooh, you played a demo of a game. How impressive.

Different strokes for different folks.

Well, of course they want to like it. If they're fans of the series, the last thing they would want is a terrible hackneyed reboot/remake of something they love, and the first thing they want is another iteration in the series worthy of their "like." They aren't, however, hating on it for no reason. They don't like what they've seen and they don't have faith in the developer who is making it. It's really that simple.

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the series but what I do like about it has very little to do with the frame rate that the article makes such a big deal out of. What I like about the DMC series is the complex and deep combat engine that ranks second only to the one in the Team Ninja Ninja Gaiden games. It is in this that I find most of my trepidation for the new DMC as Ninja Theory just seems unable to make deep, lasting and compelling combat. It's not just about looking pretty, it's about actually feeling it and being in control of it.

30FPS and emo Dante... Great you can take that Ninja Theory and shoot yourself into the sun ! I'll stick with DMC3 when we talk about DMC prequels.

I just thought of something...

I'm sure most people know of Marvel comics, right? And how they create the "Ultimate" continuity around the time the first X-Men movie dropped (or was the Spider-Man first)?

There it is - Devil may Cry by Capcom and Ultimate Devil May Cry by Ninja Theory.

I have my own reserves for this game like everyone else, but I'm going to reserve judgment until a demo of some kind drops.

ColdStorage above made a good argument as to how they don't really look that similar except for the hair.

It could easily be argued that he looks more like the original Dante.

They have very similar facial structures, a more roundish head, all that stuff.
Actually, not really. You may not agree with this, but here's what I see:

- Tameem has an oval-shaped head with a squarish chin. Dante has a round head and what looks like a pointed chin in that particular screen. Also Dante's jaw is more prominent (though that might be the angle).
- Tameem's nose is slightly flatter and the tip points down, whereas Dante's nose is longer and the tip points out.
- Things like hair color and style and eyes are non-issues for obvious reasons.

And really, how can anyone say that them looking alike is more than a conveniently-timed coincidence? Dante has more or less looked like that since the first game way back in 2001, with subtle differences here and there to show that he aged (or hasn't yet).

---

So yeah, as I said in the beginning, I'm gonna write this off as Ultimate Devil may Cry, as imagined by a different of writers, programmers, and such and therefore has little to no bearing with the original Devil may Cry.

Although, them saying that this guy is supposed to "Dante redesigned" isn't gonna help receptions (duh). However, I do theorize that if Ninja Theory were to simple, oh... I dunno, change his name, they wouldn't be catching anywhere near as much flak.

what kind of self felicitating are the Devs pulling here. as a person who enjoys, not a fan but enjoys, DMC and finds the main character to be the biggest twat in the universe but he was likable and you wanted to see what kind of shit he would pull and how slimy he could come off. the reboot looks like a pussy on so many levels and the first one i saw of the new brunette Dante after what seems like him getting drug down a dirty back alley and violently raped and beaten...or just getting jumped what ever your mind concocts. anyway he doesn't look as awesome

Honestly, I respect Ninja Theory and Capcom for sticking to their guns. It takes cojones to stand up for your game despite all the backlash it gets. If the game is good or bad, it will be due to its own merits, not because Dante doesn't look exactly like before.

They're sticking to their guns, for good or ill. And I respect that, to an extent.

Issurru said:
Edit: I would also like to hit you with a shovel Tameem, why? Because you are a smug little bastard, which oddly enough makes me smirk because I then begin to think of how Dante should actually be. Instead of what you made him out to be
Yes, for changing Dante into a.........what exactly did they change Dante to?See, an interesting thought occurred to me, everyone is screaming around like a banshee, saying "Dante is ruined!" when, really, all we have seen is a redesign. Nothing on his character. People say "emo angsty teen Twitard!", but when has he ever shown characteristics of said emo/angsty characteristics? He looks much more like a punk-ass kid, and that's evident considering his fighting style.

And really, with fans reacting as childishly as this, I wonder why they're taking the "talk to the hand" approach? Well, certainly if they were just reasonable then everyone would be happy! Except the fans. Because they are being completely immature and won't be satisfied no matter what they do.

As I've said any time this is mentioned, it's okay to be worried about the game. Be worried about its direction, that is completely understandable. But the amount of pure hatred this game is getting before any real substance is provided for the game is just ridiculous. It's practically a case study of gamers being unable to accept change. The game could be gold and diamonds but the "fans" would still hate on this game, dogmatically refusing to change their minds out of the immature belief that somehow they are right and it just terrible.
Exactly this - I don't mind when game developers step up and say "we're making the game we want to make, so deal with it..." because the amount of people who will whine about the most inane stuff is just unbelievable. I love my games, and will happily debate all sorts of things about them... but I don't worry that they games I love so much will suddenly start sucking. They'll change, sure, but that's fine.

I'm just repeating shit I've been told, I can't promise that it's accurate. What I've heard is that the designer and co-founder Tameem Antoniades just made the character look like him.

<spoiler=Image comparison>http://i.screwattack.com/content/images/orig_10439_1_1285149703.jpg
He doesn't look that similar to me. I mean sure he is white and broody looking but honestly that sums about half the guys I went to high school with. Anyways, a.) if wants to project himself a little on the character let him and b.) I never really got into the DMC games enough to be butthurt about this so I really don't have anything to say other then...

Why are all main characters either broody or muscley? Where is average flabby guy who doesn't hate his life but doesn't really love it either?

Good comments by ninja theory, did anyone actually think dante wouldn't look like this as a teen he's a punk/rock/goth this look is obviously very much what his teens year's would look like & i guess he'll end up with white hair near end of the game.

If only we could go back to before everything punk/rock/goth was called emo -.-

It's no secret. Of course we want to like the game. It's Devil May Cry. Why won't you let us like it, Ninja Theory? Why did you make it unlikeable?

What I didn't like about the gameplay trailer:

Boring, generic scythe weapon.
Combat identical to DMC 1 (lacking the flash and style of DMC 3).
No interesting combos.
Uninspired enemies.
No bosses.
Same location throughout.
No shouts of "BREAKDOWN!!" or "BLAST OFF!!", etc. from protagonist.

There is A LOT of flavor from the old games missing here. The core is there, but Ninja Theory has a ton of work to do.

Go watch the trailer for Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition. You'll see in 2 seconds what the new game is missing.

I've already made my decision to at least rent this game to try it out.

And yes, I sure want to like it.

It would be horrible if I had to honestly admit that there's a Devil May Cry game that I detest.

Also, I feel the need to put this out there.

Two recent promo posters have me torn as to what to think about the game.

For one, this shows the game will most likely have a humourous side to it, thankfully.

But there's still a little something that just irks me about it but... eh. That's probably just the fact that I don't like the general look.

This one however just seems to enforce the stupid cliche of half angel/half demon which I can't stand.

So there's room for it to be good.... but lots of room for it to be bad :s
I must say though that this trailer has my hopes back up a bit. White hair, boss footage, more gameplay and the character seems to be redesigned a little bit to look less brooding but maybe that's just me. But... yeah... yay :D
