One thing they didn't fully report in this article but got reported here in Australia was that there was a ninja student lurking in the shadows out the front of the dojo when the muggers struck and they didn't notice him.
I was hoping the article was going to say he lept from the shadows and took all three out but instead he did the sensible thing and got backup from inside.

...On an offshoot, ninjitsu school next to a shady alleyway, and its an apprentice ninja that spots them, knows its too much for him, and calls in his master?
