I bought mine on a whim, since I just got paid, on the day of release. Gamestop still had a few in (though mine was the only black one left). It didn't appear to be flying off the shelf, but they said it had done pretty damn well for a handheld. They had a pretty hefty stock of them to prepare. Glad I was able to just walk in and grab one on release day though... I honestly wasn't expecting that

if I remember right the ds didnt exactly fly off store shelves right away either but the longer it was out the more demand for it grew
Just for comparison, the DS sold 500 grand in the first week. However, that also sold during the holiday season while the 3DS is being sold in spring which is typically a dead area for games. Nintendo isn't one to lie, so it probably did have a successful launch though I am up for exaggeration depending.

I bought mine at a midnight launch and there were about 15 or so people so launch was a little stale. I am loving my 3DS so far, but the launch titles are a little bleh. Luckily I have plenty of ds/dsi games to fall back on till new better games come out. Sadly this is the first time I ever had to rely on backwards compatibility due to crappy launch titles with a brand new system.
