Nintendo, Gamestop Deliver Three Shiny, Legendary Pokémon

Over the next few months, Gamestop will be distributing three special Pokémon: Shiny versions of the legendary Giratina, Dialga and Palkia.

Gamestop and Nintendo have revealed plans to release a series of shiny, legendary Pokémon totally gratis to anyone willing to brave the wilds of their local shopping center. According to Nintendo, come August 19, the shiny Dialga will be available for download at almost every Gamestop/EB Games location. It will be available for three weeks, then on September 9 the Dialga will be replaced by a shiny Palkia. Three weeks later, on September 30, Giratina appears.

Those of you who keep up on your Pokémon lore should already be aware that those three 'mon stand as huge figures in the Pokémon universe. Without getting into the full backstory, you can consider these three to be analogous to deities. Dialga represents time, Palkia represents space, and Giratina is some kind of horrible nightmare dragon thing. Point being: They're very desirable Pokémon.

As for that "shiny" notation, it's a relatively little-known feature of the Pokémon games that basically boils down to, "you got incredibly lucky and picked up a hyper-rare, specially-colored version of this pocket monster." During normal gameplay, when encountering any given Pokémon, the odds of it being shiny are roughly 1 in 8,192, so you can see why such 'mon are so in-demand.

Now that your interest is piqued, all you need do to pick up your new Poképals is visit a Gamestop store during the period of time outlined above. Assuming you own Pokémon Black, Pokémon White or either of their sequels, you should be able to download the applicable Pokémon to your 3DS or DS handheld.

What you do from there is in your hands, though I'd suggest humiliating the Elite Four repeatedly. Those pompous jerks have it coming.

*marks days on calendar*
You had me at "shiny" Mr. Cavalli. Got me the 3 shiny dogs back in the day, now to get the gods of Time, Space, and Shadow (I always forget Giritina's though).
Heck, maybe I should also grab Black 2/White 2 while I'm there because it's one of the only Pokemon main series games that I actually don't have. :p

As for the Elite 4's snootiness, that depends on which region really.
However, doesn't matter what region it was, Caitlin was a snooty prick in more than one game.

For those wondering by the way, this will be happening at GAME in the UK.

Who have also announced the pre-order bonus too.

In all honestly I want that, but I don't remember what the preorder bonus here is. Lately there seems to be a lot of art books. >.>

Nintendo knows they've just de-vauled their shiny versions of the Legnadaries, right? The ones of real value will be the ones that are actually caught within the game. The only problem is having proof that they were naturally caught, though.

Not to mention how uncontrollable they'll be since most are likely to add them at the beginning of the game...

Out of interest, are hacked pokemon usable in online play? Clearly tournaments would disallow them, but if they are then I can't see why shiny pokemon would be that valuable.

It's worth noting that the dates for the UK distribution are slightly different to the US ones.

Also is that a UK pre-order bonus or just US/Japan?

I kind of need that. Not like a lot, but that is seriously awesome and I wish someone over here would offer it.

the idea is probably you have beaten your game, they'll be added as a gift which usually carries some kinda special message, and nintendo already lowered shiny value when they increased the chance to find them through breeding and in gen IV when they made hem easier ot find with the seeker thing.

besides, they'll still carry value, sinceits still a legitimate legendary, and in fact will be even more valuable because they're event pokemon and those are highly sought.

OT: I'll be getting them all, and keeping them. since i never got diamond tihs will be a good way to get dialga.

As far as I'm aware it's exclusive to GAME at the moment so just the UK, at the moment. Pre-order bonuses are usually continent-based though, so this may end up being Europe-wide.

There is some form of legality checker built in to the games themselves, but if a hacked 'mon has the stats of a legitimately obtainable one there's literally no way of telling. Shinies aren't valuable except for personal value. I have a completely legit Black 2 cartridge, I refuse to trade with anyone I know didn't obtain their mons legit (not that I have anything against that really, but as soon as I start down that road I know I'll lose all motivation to breed / train and play the actual game) The shinies I have on there mean something to me because they represent something not many other people have, something that makes the hundereds of hours spent in the game seem more successful.

Also, they look nice.

But X and Y are supposed to come out on the same day for all but a few select countries. Is the UK release date for X and Y different then the rest of the world?

I think it depends on how they are going to set up the online battle system for the game. But legitimate event shiny Pokemon usually have some sort of significance and special ID. Last time they did this with the 3 Legendary dogs you were able to get Zoroark legitimately.

No, I mean the distribution of the Shinys. Serebii has the NA dates at;

Shiny Dialga Aug 19 - Sep 8
Shiny Palkia Sep 9 - Sep 29
Shiny Giratina Sep 30 - Oct 20

And UK dates as;

Shiny Dialga August 30 - September 12
Shiny Palkia September 13 - September 26
Shiny Giratina September 27 - October 12

Ah, I see.

Well your dates are closer to the actual release of Pokemon X and Y so that's probably why they did it. That way you could pick up the game and get the Pokemon at the same time or something like that. That's at least how I see it.

Despite all legendaries having a shiny version coded into the game it is impossible to actually legitimately catch a shiny legendary. Not that the odds are high, but that no matter how many times you restart the save you made before the fight it will never pop up as a shiny version. The only time you see shiny versions of legendaries are when Nintendo gives them out in events like this, and they are tagged as such so that they are not confused with people who hacked shiny versions of the legendaries into their games.

That being said, shiny versions aren't anything special, if the time I spent in the Pokemon community is any indication. Players have worked it out to such a fine science that you can find multiple guides out there which tell you how exactly how the game determines if a shiny pokemon will pop up. On the main trading forums between players there are people who specialize in trading out specific shinies on request, and the only acceptable forms of pokemon to trade for anything are shinies or legendaries.

So believe me when I tell you that Nintendo doesn't have to do anything to devalue the idea of shiny Pokemon, players have done that for them.

If you have white and white 2 and you go to different Gamestops would you be able to get the legendaries in both games?

It's one per game. You don't even have to go to different Gamestops, you just walk in, hit "mystery gift", and get your shiny. Gamestop doesn't limit it, the game cartridge does it. Meaning you get one per game cartridge.
