I'm frankly still surprised the Ps2 is still selling. We all knew the Wii would find a market, but nobody expected the PS2 to continue dominating the market. It's more casual than the Wii. xD

If they didn't the game industry would have been dead and buried for decades already. If people really wanted variety why would yet another game about shooting terrorists in the modern day sell so much? Besides, the last time something like NSMBW was done was 18 years ago while something like Darksiders has last been done at the start of the generation with Zelda Twilight Princess and Mass Effect 2 is the sequel to a game released this generation.

Has more shovelware too

But I joke because I love my PS2...if I could still find it that is.

Anyway this is again unsurprising and I have to ask why people are still surprised by this. Yes Sony had a good thing going with the PS1 and the PS2, doing many of the things that people now berate Nintendo for doing (i.e. trying to make gaming more mainstream) and unfortunately the PS3 was their decision to try and go for broke and dominate the tiny HD market.

So it's only natural that the original industry leader would make a comeback eventually, that's the nature of competition.

How utterly dissapointing that a crappy remake tops the charts..

For once I'd like Nintendo not to be on top.

And my inner S.T.A.L.K.E.R. fan was disappointed at a lack of Call of Pripyat.
I'm a little skeptical about CoP, still ordered it (should be ariving tommorow) but it does look somewhat identical to clear sky.

Don't be.

CoP is what Clear sky would have been if Clear Sky didn't suck.

Stopped following the Wii's sales a looong time ago. Almost every Wii sold is in a bundle with Wii Sports Resort or something so where's the surprise? Nintendo still wipes themselves with silk, big deal.

I have a theory why Nintendo's games keep selling.

Its because you can play them with an actual person in the same room instead of some douche on the internet calling you an "uber-fag."

Sure, you can play MW2 and Army of Two on 1 TV, but they just don't have the accessibility New Super Mario Bros. or Wii Sports Resort does.
I can believe that. My Wii is primary system so it's both Off and Online fun. When my friends come over, we play NWSBW,SSBB,TvC,MKW,HOTDO,Wii Sports Resort,PBR. And for my online friends, we play SSBB,MKW,The Conduit,TvC,PBR,and soon Monster Hunter 3. And because some of the Wii titles don't have a mic...so to speak, I don't have to hear the idiots online unlike Xbox Live(backup system)

If they didn't, we would be playing the games that we have today.

Wow 3 years running and nintendo is still kicking ass and taking names still don't understand how many people think Wii owners don't buy games when over half of the top ten best sellers are Wii exclusive titles
Because their connection rate (games sold/consoles sold) is MUCH lower than microsoft and sony's. Put another way, if Wii owners bought as many games as their microsoft and sony counterparts, there wouldn't be any ps3 or 360 games on the list.

Fair... Fair. The Sky is Blue, Men Like porn etc.. etc..

People shouldn't be interested in sales anywyas. Great games are still great games no matter how much they sell. And Poor gamers and poor games too.
- Just Dance is fun for non gamers, but there are better dance games out there.
- Mario is great as always, even though there is no Innovations at all.
- Mass effect Is pretty damn good, but there are better RPG's to be playing on.
- And Darksiders is a very good mix of Hack and Slash and exploration gameplay

Darksiders has no excuse for being outsold by Just Dance, however. What the fuck happened there?

Yeah, why aren't they playing those new and innovative third-person shooters?

That's like saying all FPS's are pathetic because they have been done BEFORE MILLIONS OF TONS OF TIMES ALREADY. Ugh.

I don't really have much of a problem with this as the "most popular" of highest selling anything are almost always compromised appeals to the lowest common denominator. I mean more people watch shitty soaps like "Emmerdale" than watched "The Wire" (BLOODY good TV Show by the way, apparently hardly anyone watched it though).

In many ways this shows the maturity of gaming as a pastime, it no longer just a niche hobby restricted to a small demographic with certain tastes. That niche is still there but it has GROWN and really we should stop getting

New Super Mario Bros. Wii doesn't actually look all that bad, but at the same time I can see exactly why it can appeal to the mass market. I guess that is the genius of Miyamoto to please his two masters, though I still wish he would have given us a game "just for the fans" (and I DON'T mean Nintendo-fanboys, I mean everyone who liked the "good old days")

I'd also wonder how much of an uneven playing field this is:
-Wii games are sold at a lower price, especially around the world (£29 in uk = $45) while 360/PS3 games seem to be getting more expensive (now usually £45 = $72). Wii may sell more but may not be earning as much revenue.
-although a few Wii games sell EXTREMELY well, not many of them see this success as is the case Mario Kart Wii just sells at a high rate constantly selling out since 2008, but every few weeks there is a new "Triple-A" game for the PS3 and/or 360. It's kind of like putting all your eggs in once basket see.
-Wii's appeal to group-play breaks down a huge barrier to any game getting into a family home, such as the mother and/or father having bias against any video games for being anti-social and isolating. (that might be true... but the same applies to the escapism of reading a good book, ultimately it is just prejudice)

Err, no... they just haven't played any of the other games that did this all before, many of them when half of them came out.

And New Super Mario Bros. Wii does it's job quite well and captures the fun of old school side scrolling platforming, does it very well with lots of new features but importantly integrates coop play. I can only think of Contra as another game that did coop-sides-scrolling-platfomer... or at least one that did it well.

I suppose a purist approach requires that those bloody kids should just download Super Mario Bros. 3 or Super Mario 64 via Virtual Console before they even think of playing any of the new "re-hashed Zeldas"

Well I ask you, if you played COD4... did you play the first COD game? If You played Killzone 2, did you play Killzone 1? I think new gamers are perfectly entitled to play the latest games and they don't HAVE to play the classics to appreciate the modern stuff.

And to be honest, the innovations seen in Super Mario Galaxy over Mario 64 are just as significant as the improvements in First Person Shooters in the same time, essentially the same but highly evolved.

Remember, no one said NSMBW is a better game than Mass Effect 2. Not even that more people are playing it. And if anyone has, they're less tolerant fanboys than I. It's all really just a matter of accessibility. Say you've never played a video game before and your child is offering to show you the ropes. Which do you think you'll more easily grasp: "Control pad moves, this button is jump," or the interface of a console FPS?

This is the reason why denigrating "casual" gamers has never made sense to me. These people are the new lifeblood of the video game industry, even when they're grandparents. Today's casual dabblers can become tomorrow's hardcore elite. It's like the "gateway drug" philosophy. Mario is marijuana (insert magic mushroom joke here), Mass Effect is heroin. WoW is crack, but we all knew that.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a happy little fanboy dance to get back to. ;)
