So in a way Nintendo is like Apple and Sony and Microsoft, they want to control what you get to do with your property.
Fix'd. *cough* Other OS mode *cough*

Seriously, I could go on about how consoles are the perfect example of DRM, but then that would make me look like a elitist PC elitist (yes, they do exist).

This goes back to a rant I had during the 4.2 incident.

In short, why the hell is Nintendo trying to curtail an aspect of the community (the homebrew scene) which likes the Wii and generally continues to support it, instead of going directly for the people who are pirating games.

News Flash Nintendo: Most Homebrew users don't use it to play pirated games (unless you count emulators and even 10 year olds can do that these days on the PC).
Sorry to interrupt your rant, HBC is the gateway to run pirated games, even Wiiware stuff.
By logic block the access to it would prevent newer wiis of being modded, much the expected holiday season sales, the only problem is that people who wouldn't pirate, would "suffer" the loss of functionality, but let's face it, it's easier to get an emulator on a pc for 16 bits gen games than mod a wii just to play the relaunched (and pretty much the same thing) ones.

Wii piracy, eh? I didn't even know it existed!
I didn't either. >_> To me it seems too basic to bother hacking.
well its the best selling system so far so...why wouldn't it have piracy?
yes, but most of those sales are for small children, casual gamers, and old people. none of which even begin to comprehend what "hacking" is beyond what they may have seen in tron.
you maybe right to a point but its still a big enough deal that Nintendo keeps trying to shut it down, so either the Wii has raised a generation of geriatric hackers or your trying to discredit the system.

Also, can't these updates be avoided easily on the Wii?
It's not exactly Piracy they're trying to deal with. It's game enhancements and other Wii Hacks.
And you can't really avoid Wii Update. Not really. Some titles need the Wii Updates or they won't run.

But as said earlier by numerous people, Homebrew friendly updates are made not too long after the update is released.
