I feel that since the Switch, Nintendo has done away with some of their worst practices, and overall been more consumer-friendly. They got rid of their YouTube Program, the Switch is the first console of theirs to NOT have region-locking, and they allowed crossplay when Sony didn't.
What do you think has caused this turnaround?

I feel like they've learned a lot from their failure with the WiiU.

simple, if you're not winning the console war, you become more consumer friendly to try and increase sales.

Sony currently has the most sales with PS4 which is why they don't give a shit about being consumer friendly anymore and have started doing the anti-consumer stuff like blocking crossplay and not allowing non playstation 4 destiny 2 players, to transfer their characters from xbox to the PC.

The name helps. A lot.

People underestimate the imporatance of your product's name. The "Wii U" had two major problems with its name: it doubled down on an already dumb-sounding name and, more importantly, it didn't make its lineage or relation to the other console clear. "Wii U" doesn't sound like a natural progression after "Wii", it sounds like an add-on (which a lot of people thought it was) or maybe a handheld (ie. inferior) version. On the other hand "Switch" tackles the idea of change right in the title, and the ads make it paintakingly obvious what its uses are (unlike the initial confusion surrounding the Wii U).

I also think it had a good launch lineup with BotW, Mario Odyssey further down the line and the promise of 3rd party support.

You think Sony's gonna go full PS3 launch with the PS5?

Going back to a normal controller setup and not those stupid motion controller things helped. Making deals for third party games helped a ton.

Nintendo's anti-consumerism is almost as bad as Microsoft. It'll take time for Nintendo to make significant progress.

Nintendo gets passes for doing the same shit everyone else gets shit on for like on-disc DLC. Capcom got reamed for that, but Nintendo does it even worse than Capcom without penalty for some reason. Nintendo makes the same game over and over again like Ubisoft. I could go on and on and on.
