No DLC Planned for Final Fantasy XIII

Square Enix says stories about the large amount of content that was cut from Final Fantasy XIII [http://www.amazon.com/Final-Fantasy-XIII-Playstation-3/dp/B000FQ2DTA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1278964269&sr=1-1] were "taken out of context" and that it has no plans to release any downloadable content for the game.

It was reported in January that a "crapload [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/97532-Mounds-of-Content-Cut-from-Final-Fantasy-XIII]" of content had been cut from Final Fantasy XIII, which came out in Japan in December and hits North American shelves in March. Art Director Isamu Kamikokuryou said enough material had been cut "to make an additional game," including the main character's home, a park, a "secret base" and even a zoo. Naturally, this led to all sorts of speculation that Squeenix was holding things back for later release as DLC.

Not so, according to Game Director Motomu Toriyama, who thinks the game is fine just the way it is. "Regarding the DLC content, we feel that the final product is 100 percent enjoyable... It's the complete package. So we're not planning any DLC at this time," he told the PlayStation Blog [http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/02/final-fantasy-xiii-your-questions-answered/].

"In regard to the rumored cut content, we feel it was taken out of context," he continued. "There are a lot of ideas that are brought to the table, and then the team takes the best ideas out of those, and the final product is polished that way. There was content that were 'ideas' that didn't make the final content, but the team isn't looking to release that as downloadable content."

The "at this time" caveat leaves some wiggle room but the message is pretty clear: Don't hold your breath waiting for DLC. Final Fantasy XIII is scheduled for release in North America, Europe and Australia on March 9 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Wouldn't expect it either way...just seems weird for a JRPG to have DLC anyway. That may just be me however...

Then again, the DLC for western RPG's bothers me too, still, better than nothing at all, and I end up buying them when they release them in collected expansion packs anyhow. :3

They should release what they have as DLC. It makes no sense to keep it hidden away. I mean, if the game is already a full experience, what's wrong with charging a couple bucks for content that's already created? It beats having to make brand new content, and whoever the programmers were that coded the stuff probably worked really hard on it.

His point was that the content never WAS created. They were still just ideas on paper when they were cut.

Namco-Bandai's been doing it out the nose with Tales of Vesperia and Graces in Japan. They're mostly costumes, some titles, and weapons, though, nothing ground breaking.
That saying, FF really doesn't have any need for DLC, alternate outfits would be a bit out of place and you can't really back track, so you wouldn't beable to see anything till subsequent playthroughs.

That said, if there's an FFVII remake, I'd pay money for Cloud in a dress to be alternate costume DLC.

So long as they don't try and sucker us collectors with Final Fantasy XIII-2, I don't care if it's DLC or tossed away forever.

I hated even BUYING X-2, I've yet to even open the game. (Granted, I detested FFX, I only bought X-2 to "have" it.)

Good?

I'm glad at least one company doesn't hold back useless or pointless DLC just to re-release at a later date for no reason other than profit.

Well on the upside, they are apparently giving us the entire game the first time we buy it without tossing in DLC to "add to the incomplete experience"

I find FF games dont need DLC.

If it can hold my attention for 40 hours + Ill be satisfied.

Ill probably do 2 full runs of the game doing side quests then play it again once in a full moon.

Good thing, I hate DLC. Also, with FF I never got the idea it would have been better with extra content.

If you want a glimmer of hope for extra content, they usually do something different with the international version. I think DLC is unlikely; I don't think SqEn would have had it in the cards as it would be quite tangental to the layout of most FF games.

Well it's certainly not a 'No way'

Certainly be intresting if they didn't. Although saying that seems to be a staple for JPRPGs.

I guess a linear rpg has no real need for additional dlc, but I still suspect we'll be seeing something released down the line. This just feels like a "we don't want to make it right now" deal.

It's a little sad, actually. I think a zoo would be pretty sweet!

That having been said, I am getting a little sick of DLC. "Buy our almost-complete game for full price, then pay more money for more game! Especially if you want achievement points!" This has angered me on more than one occasion.

This type of situation still makes me rage. That is, the situation where fans are more appeased by less content than more. If they came out with early DLC people would be up in arms about an "incomplete experience" and whatnot - despite everything else being the same, they would have more than otherwise.

I suppose it's just the human condition, people never being happy with what they have, or what they're getting.

Also: the game in its entirety is not linear, I've read that explained multiple times and am echoing it here, for clarity's sake. The introduction or "first half" is; the latter part of the game is not.

that is highly depressing. i was already a bit iffy on the game even thoug i'm a ff fan (personally i think ff 13 vs is gonna be the better game) but if there is no content then what's really th point from what i've seen the graphic are great but the battle system is...kinda Xenosaga 2-ish starting a combo with on character and finishing with another. i'm not seeing what's gonna draw me to it

Is it a big deal that games don't have DLC?, i don't think so; older games didn't need DLC why does it matter if new ones don't?
