Nothing quite like a focus group to make a bunch of otherwise ineffectual, socially inept retards feel all big and important so they can then, of course, OVER-THINK every last little detail of whatever it is they're "focusing" on with the mistaken belief that they know what the hell they're talking about.

It never fails to dilute, obfuscate, and otherwise "dull & dumb down" what could otherwise be an original, thought provoking project. "I don't like it because it doesn't have a happy ending" etc.

In short, FUCK FOCUS GROUPS.

Make your project the way YOU want to make it, god dammit! Why do developers always pander to the lowest common denominator? Why do they LISTEN to these people? Just the simple fact that they were "Chosen" to BE in a focus group for something like this only serves to inflate their egos & sense of self importance, which will obviously effect their final opinion.

Did I mention Fuck Focus Groups?

Ok, just checking.

Wow, can I get a "fail" from the audience?!
Fail! Resounding fail!

OT: I really think the promise of shaking the Mickey formula up would have attracted a larger audience than any focus group could really find. Then again focus groups, in particular the many ones that stifle creativity, are another quiet blow against the videogames are not art argument (even if I think they are).

If even a biker was against engrimdarkening Mickey Mouse, then it probably is, in fact, not too good of an idea.

[HEADING=2]Hey fellow nerds! I understand how appealing it always seems to make gritty reboots of stuff, but please... don't. It always turns out to be a bad idea.[/HEADING]

Cue me being buried in a wave of "YOU SUCK" and "LOL KIDDIE" in 3, 2, 1.
I don't think any of us wanted a GRITTY Mickey, that would just be silly. We just wanted an interesting/awesome Mickey. Take Kingdom Hearts Mickey, for example. The dude's fucking Yoda in those games.
Agreeed, it's not gritty as much as it is that we wanted an awesome mickey game.

GG Disney, you lost a huge chunk of respect from me, not that you care, but your game isn't going to sell near as well because most your audience wanted morality in it.
EDIT: Wow I fail and the rest of all of you do too, they're not removing the morality, they're just removing his look of a snarling rat.

Btw Bikers are just sissies who are insecure about they're (Insert something to be insecure about).

*sigh*

The unique features of the game were a steampunk setting, visibly impactful light/dark paths, and an interesting story. So... we're down to one of those three. Not looking good.

This to me translates as "We're pussing out of what could've been an interesting spot of darkness from a company who has an otherwise wholesome image".

Focus groups and market research make alot of games puss out of good ideas. L4D got screwed out of an ongoing storyline due to people not liking the dissapointment (see: Good storytelling) and this looks to be a similiar case.

Oh good. As long as the morality of mickey is in place, and the Story is brilliant (It looks it) then I'll be happy and I'll still buy it... Although Mean Mickey would've been a nice idea... Maybe they'll have Mean Mickey as a boss now, Kind of like how Shadow Mario is Evil Mario In Super Mario Sunshine.

Not really a surprise. Small history lesson: Originally Mickey Mouse would do all sorts of mischief, but when he became very popular, Walt Disney would get swamped with letters from parents that Mickey was a bad role model. So mickey wasn't allowed do 'bad' anymore. Eventually they had to come up with Donald, who could fill the role of being mischievous.

If they wanted a gritty, mean, character then why they hell would they take a character that has been around since before they were born that does not fit that description at all and change him into that? They could make a new character of their own. I know people like dark, less kid friendly retellings of stories and characters but it doesn't always work. I agree that the game would have been cooler the other way, but they could have used a different character.

"Don't mess with my childhood"? No. Mess with my childhood. Give me something unexpected! Give me something new! I want to see Mickey do something that I'd never expect him to do.

Not really. It's not the... well yeah, it's the marketing research fault on that one. Why didn't they pick gamers for the test instead of the guys that pass by the building?

Agreed.

Seeing the same stuff over and over is boring.

I think I read somewhere that The TV show Seinfeld did bad in focus groups... Yeah, you know one of the most POPULAR TV sitcoms ever made!

Also, the gritty reboot of Batman was for the best and you know it ;)
No, no it wasn't.

It worked. There's a difference.
Fair enough. Still, in my opinion, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight are miles ahead of any Batman movie to date.

Anyway.
Mask of the Phantasm, Sub zero, the animated series from the 90's.

Also, Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker... I guess that may not count considering Bruce is an elderly dude besides in the flashback...

They should give the option at least. They're cutting out a decent part of the game just because one or 2 whiny kids found it scary or someone blurted about nostalgia.

That's just the kind of guy I am I guess.

Not that I won't consider ending the boycott further down the line, but at the moment that studio is on my shit list.
well as long as you haven't shut them down entirely :p sorry if I sounded mean, it just blew my mind that youd not play any of a studios games because of mickey not being a rat lol
It is quite alright, dear Sir.
I guess I did come off a bit harsh towards them.

I was mildly interested in seeing a new take on the age old mouse, and watching him slowly turn from What we know into something not so cheery could have made me think about maybe renting this.
But with that bit of creativity gone, it has become nothing more than a Mario Sunshine rip-off (With paint instead of water, and a different well-known character from people's childhoods).
