No More "Mean Mickey" in Epic Mickey

My impressions of this game fall further the more info is released about it. From the initial concept art I actually thought this was going to be an "Epic" take on mickey. But now it's just 'Mickey Mouse in Paintland'. The first blow was the screenshots, which didn't seem to reflect the concept art at all.

The whole idea was for it to be a different take on Mickey Mouse that wasn't defined by what the corporate dudes over at disney wanted to sell to the kids. And no, it's not about it being "gritty". It's about ( at least from what I was hoping for ) looking for a more outlandish take, and maybe even a little twisted, look at what could be taken from Mickey Mouse and the other disney characters.

I don't want disney to completely change the aesthetic of Mickey Mouse and start peddling products with pictures of Lovecraftian disney characters on them. But for the purposes of this game, I was hoping for something maybe a little more different than what you would expect from a Mickey Mouse game. It's not like there's some sort of shortage of normal mickey mouse products after all.

Well, Im sorry to say, that drops the game off my wish-list.

Fear of messing with the past only stifles the future. While I will admit that I remember the cartoons of my bygone era fondly, opening new doors and exploring new routes has always been an automatic thumbs up in my book.

Sorry guys. Thats one less customer.
(And to be frankly honest, Id bet my not-inconsiderable paycheck that this decision has alot less to do with "focus groups", and more to do with Disney Execs who ran a hot load of mouse turds in their pants when they saw what the studio planned to do.)
(What can you expect, from people who make a Hannah Montanna video game???)

and i can now hear the awesomeness that was shown for this game is slowly fading away by people bowing down to the demands of middle-aged over-protective moms.
and middle-aged over protective biker dudes.
they should just keep it awesome let a bunch of people buy it out of curiosity and then handle the censorship nutlobs.

Augh. That was what made that game so appealing to me, the idea of going back to Mickey's traditional prankster roots (although snarling rat seems like they would have taken it too far, as someone above has already said). So much for dusting off the Wii.

He can still be a prankster, just not a rat monster. It still retains it's Hero/Scrapper/Neutral Mickey RPG element. You can still be a mouse douche, just not a Rat Douche.

...see kids, this is why reading comprehension is so important. Thanks for clarifying that.

No problem, but it was kind of confusing to me the first time I read it, someone told me though. I was praying the RP elements were still in it (Not that it matters, I'd try being a hero or Neutral), I am glad that it is. I am still buying this game.

I lost interest after I saw the game in action, I just loved those concept drawings.

I'm guessing your test audience isn't really a gaming crowd. More like who wish was your target demographic, BUT THEY AREN'T. Wii Fit is making a lot of money yep, I got it. Your never going to get that demographic making a water-down product involving Micky Mouse. It has to have something cool to it and let's face it Micky Mouse isn't. Your trying to fix this, that's the point. Or do you just want another product tested failure?

It was a unique idea, sure, but I'm not against them scrapping it. Mickey is Mickey. He's been this way for the better part of a century and he shouldn't change now.

Haha, great picture. I love Taz.
That's actually a real show.

It was about the loony tunes fighting crime and shit.

And road runner talked :|
Stop hatin' that show was good.
Based on your comment I watched the first episode on you tube. That show was bad, it only narrowly gets beaten by Battlefield Earth as the worst thing I've ever watched.

OT: I thought focus groups were horribly unfashionable these days?
Clearly you do not watch enough TV.

God damn that picture is amazing.

I can't believe they've got rid of that bit, one of the whole two things that made this game not just another spectacularly boring disney mario wannabe.

I'm still fairly intrigued by the whole fairly warped world/characters, but the dark mickey thing was cool.

But on the other hand, it could have just worked out as well as the werehog in Sonic Unleashed...

Wow, it's sad to see a game get less interesting as its release date draws nearer. It started out with some fantastic concept art, but then the screenshots come out and the game looks next to nothing like it. Then we're told that it will have a good/evil system that allows you to help or terrorize innocents, sell off the body parts of fellow icon Donald Duck or put him back together, and who knows what else in the full release. And now we're told one of the very few interesting things about this game is being removed? By the time this comes out this is going to be another by-the-numbers Disney game that's only of interest to tykes, wierdos, and people who like things that are bad.

... I dunno, it's possible they could surprise us. I mean, Disney Interactive made Split/Second, and that game's pretty damn cool, even to a hater of racing games like myself.

...I can't say I understand the drive to making Mickey Mouse "dark" in the first place. It's Mickey Mouse. He's an established character who isn't mean or evil in any way, and it's stupid to try to change him into something like that.

If you want to make an evil Disney character, make a new one.

If even a biker was against engrimdarkening Mickey Mouse, then it probably is, in fact, not too good of an idea.

[HEADING=2]Hey fellow nerds! I understand how appealing it always seems to make gritty reboots of stuff, but please... don't. It always turns out to be a bad idea.[/HEADING]

Cue me being buried in a wave of "YOU SUCK" and "LOL KIDDIE" in 3, 2, 1.
I agree with you, entirely.

Well now, there goes my already-scant enthusiasm. Kudos to those people.

Well I don't really think of it as "Evil Mickey", more like "Asshole Mickey". The Mickey we knew and loved in the 30's and 40's cartoons where he would get into mischief, cause chaos, and then save the day. More like Jerry from Tom 'n Jerry than the grimdark Punisher.
I personally liked that Mickey more than the modern Mickey, a 1-dimensional paragon of hope and goodwill, a Goody Little Two Shoes. That's what I'm a little sad for.
The article mentions that they'll have little guardians floating around, they'll be red if you've been misbehaving with the paint gun or whatever it is you use.
See, you can still be an asshole if you so feel the need to be.

He doesn't need to turn into a "Snarling rat", which is the point I believe Kollega was making.
