Is All-Female Ghostbusters Sexist?

Is the concept of hiding an all-female cast in an established franchise insulting, or a progressive step towards gender equality?

really... *eyeroll* and this is why I stopped watching No Right Answer... well that and that you guys rarely do a proper debate format. But couldn't this featured content just get rolled up into one of the 2 or 3 threads about this topic.

I was late in watching this show, but I have to admit I've really enjoyed watching other nerdy people argue about things. It was like those vs threads that always get banned, but considerably better implemented. Sad to see that the show is ending, but it hasn't been the same since one of the guys got a job that flat out banned him from making any gaming related videos.

As far as this particular episode goes: I actually thought it was one of the weaker ones. The two answers presented to the question of whether all-female ghostbusters is sexist: 1) I don't care because MORE WOMEN and MORE GHOSTBUSTERS and 2) yes and here are some good reasons. There wasn't any real discussion beyond that, mostly because it became that "more women = good" wall that goes up in these debates that just relies on repetition rather than addressing of any specific criticism. And definitely a missed opportunity to go over the motives for hiring lackluster female comedians for the first movie but pure gold male comedians for the second.

So, weak episode, but great way to represent how a discussion like this has gone everywhere else.

captcha: ladies, first. Well, at least we know where captcha is in this discussion.

Really... Really what? Really eyerolls? "Really" isn't criticism I can do anything with. "Is this really the episode that you've filmed and already presented?" "Y...yes, it really is?"

Any time I hear someone whine about how we don't do a "proper debate format" episode, I just really eyeroll. We do the traditional debate episodes, and usually we get more views and comments from discussion episodes. So if the debate was "Better episode type for us having fun and getting more audience interaction", then the guy saying "Traditional Debate Format" loses pitifully. That's really my answer. Don't worry, the show will really end on April 16th and you'll really not care.

You know, if they had a more gender equal cast, there would be problems with forcing one romantic arc and then another that'll happen presumably off-screen between the two comedy sidekick of the main characters. New ghostbusters? I'm in, as long as it doesn't do the annoying romantic comedy bit that they would if they had mixed gendered cast because I don't trust hollywood to not do that unless there's foam suits in the way.

If it's a good movie it will be a good movie.

If it's a bad movie it will be a bad movie.

Either outcome is possible if the creators give a shit and have a clue what they're doing, irrespective of what the main cast has between their legs.

Now granted, having a few more good movies with women comprising the central cast certainly wouldn't be a bad thing and on the flipside, such movies could be made without the Ghostbusters license being used, but it really does come down to something that simple.

People who can't get over the old movies will ***** no matter what happens, so just make a good movie and the rest should sort itself out.

Yes Chris, really. As to really what? You want the proper criticism then okay fine. This is yet another episode you guys have done for nothing but click bait and views. Where you take a topic you know is a hot and will probably start a debate in the thread and just go with it anyways.

Do I always agree with the topics you guys do? No, and that isn't anything you guys really need to be worried about (even in regards to this video), not everyone will find a topic you guys debate entertaining. However, I do remember when each Thursday I could look forward to some geek culture reference and You, Chris, and Dan providing counter point to each other on them. Be it Worst Father's, Best Comic book Hero, heck even the console war episodes. Then I don't know maybe a year or so ago you guys started putting more topics-de-jour stuff in some videos. (Not all, but some) To the point that it was the intro to one of them with the line akin to "Well this is a hot topic that everyone is going on about, so we will too!" That's when I stopped watching and caring.

As for the comment about debate format, I've never liked the format you guys use, and I've called you on it several times. There are a bunch of episodes (again not all) where it goes A, B, A, B, A, A Final Word, B Final Word. without B ever getting the opportunity for a third remark. And low and behold generally in those episodes A would win (assuming no spit-take). That's not debating in good faith. I have no problem with your episodes that didn't actually do the debate back and forth because the three of you were really all on the same side and you just wanted to do a discussion episode about it. However, if you're going to debate it should at least pretend to be fair.

You're correct the show will end on the 16th, and I won't really care because I stopped caring quite a while ago. I will however say that I hope the three of you have good luck with whatever it is you guys move onto. I have no ill will against any of you and I can't imagine the time/effort/work put into making an episode a week for the past four years.

So yeah, there is the 'proper' critique then.

edit: forgot Chris' quote.
Good luck going forward, I truly mean it. I hope that the experience from this helps with your future endeavors.

Kyle blew it away at the end... my hero of rationalization! :)

Anyway, an animated thing, huh?
Well, I'll sure give it a whirl after sticking with you guys for all those years! ;)

Before watching the video: Not intentionally?
After watching the video: So... Co-op or bust, then?

Anyway, why does this "animated series" sneak peak feel like the internet equivalent to Tom Goes To The Mayor?

I don't mean to beat a dead horse, but why is it that if a topic is relevant, it's us going for clickbait? Dan called me up and was excited to talk about Ghostbusters because he legitimately loves Ghostbusters, and I legitimately liked the idea of the all-female cast, which he legitimately did not. The notion of "just doing it for clickbait and views" is disgusting if you've ever seen how much we make on this show, which is not enough to care about clickbait and views. I think the last check was $130 each for roughly three months worth of episodes. We do episodes when we think about them because, OH YEAH, stuff that seems to be current seems to be on our mind. Are we supposed to look at topics and go, "Hey guys, people are talking about this and we're people too who want to talk about this, but we shouldn't talk about this because then people might want to talk about this with us." That's unapologetically moronic.

I'm sorry, I just get so damned steamed about this sort of nonsense. We're at the end of the show, we've tried to have fun since we CAN'T make a living off of this, and we're STILL trying to explain the concept of the show to people. After 4 years! And we're still going over the basic crap about what our show's tone, premise, and style is! That just makes me so depressed. -_-

As much of a bummer it is to learn No Right Answer is ending, I'm glad you're not going to the guillotine like MovieBob, Jim Sterling, and Gavin did. Who's next in line for that? LoadingReadyRun? Yahtzee?

Also, I think your upcoming animated series would look better if it were more, you know, animated.

captcha: blinded by science
I wish that was a joke from Futurama. I can easily see Professor Farnsworth using it. Well, at least it was in that short Yahtzee made out of the opening sequence to Half-Life.

Does that not kinda suggest to you that they prefer a fun debate over a rigorous one? They're going to make arguments and counterpoints, and sometimes stuff gets awarded points and sometimes it doesn't, but I know that personally I've never really cared about who wins a given debate, only the arguments they used (several of which I have taken elsewhere). It's not like they've got a big scoreboard and the person who wins the fewest debates gets kicked out of the company, it's just guys arguing with each other.

And now I think the last NRA should be "Which No Right Answer Was the Best? A Discussion Episode".

OT: I agree with Dan's argument whole-heartedly. They didn't lead the announcements with, "Hey everybody, We got Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy to be in the new Ghostbusters everyone get excited!" They started with the idea of getting an all-female cast and worked back from there, and unless your comedy is specifically about race or gender making those things the most important aspects of casting and writing seems pointlessly limiting, because it prevents you from just hiring whichever actors have the best chemistry with each other.

I'm guessing that they just gave us a rough bit from the first episode, as neither the animation or audio was really polished. They've still got a month to add in some more frames.

Soon the show will be over and no one will ask for the "right answer" ever again.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?! Are you kidding? You're kidding right?

If you're not kidding, my only reason to come here is ZP. What happened to this page? :s

If its true, I'm bummed out. I love watching you guys, your mood is catching as hell.

OT: The only one of the female leads I've heard of is Melissa and I find her pretty.....boring.

I havent seen meangirls, and I'm pretty sure I wont like it. I'm sorry guys, but in general women are just not funny. And thats not a sexist thing to say, I just dont find them very funny. Its got nothing to do with their boobs and vaginas, but all to do with their sense of humor. Are there exceptions to the rule? Of course, but they are few and far between. If I was to name a funny woman off the top of my head...I'd be really hard pressed. I might say Tiny Fey...but again...thats mostly because of 30 Rock, and in that she is utterly overshadowed by the brilliant Alec Baldwin anyway.

In recent memory, one of the funnies women to me has actually been Jennifer Aniston. I really liked her in We're the Millers, and I found her very charming in Just go with it. But thats mostly to do with decent scripts. Of course she has to have comedic timing, but I doubt Jennifer is very funny on her own.

Female Ghostbusters is about as tempting to me as a bucket of snakes.

It's true, but not the whole truth. We're not leaving, just replacing with a new show. It was time to mix things up.

Well, more animation equals not sustainable on a weekly schedule. We had to be realistic, especially since we all have day jobs and children. But test assured, the show will be fast paced, and that clip was from the pilot. Give us a few to get the flow, and you'll be rewarded.

Ya know, I just can't understand the level of annoyance some people have for the "all female" cast of the new Ghostbusters. Is it some sort of backlash against Melissa McCarthy or Kristen Wiig, or maybe Saturday Night Live in general (since the 80's and early 90's cast departed, anyway)? Is it the fear that Third Wave Feminism has finally taken control of something that geeks find actually important, like the Ghostbusters property? I just don't get it, and Dan did nothing in this video to clarify things. Hell, if this was the first video of NRA that I had seen I would actually leave this video with the impression that Dan is at the very least sexist, if not a downright misogynist. As I've seen pretty much every NRA, I know this emphatically is not the case, but damn if I didn't spend most of the video grimacing every time Dan spoke.

On the subject of the all-female cast, I'm not impressed with the line up. I'm not a fan of Melissa McCarthy; can't think of anything I've seen her in where I really enjoyed her performance. I don't watch SNL, so I can't comment on the rest of them. And even with McCarthy, I don't dislike her, I just haven't enjoyed her work. My feelings for her are much like my feelings for Adam Sandler and Will Ferrell - generally I don't enjoy Adam Sandler or Will Ferrell, but each of them has had some roles I loved. I loved Punch Drunk Love and Happy Gilmour. I loved Will Ferrell in the Lego Movie, and I do want to see Stranger Than Fiction. (which is... wow, 9 years old now.) So it's quite possible that I'll love her in Ghostbusters, and the same goes for the rest of the cast.

In the end, I'm going to side with Kyle - ain't seen nothin' of it yet, not gonna give a darn one way or another until I've seen 3 teasers and trailers. Maybe it will work, maybe it will flop, either way it's too soon to even discuss.
