If the combo packs had come out to replace standard DVDs as a means of introducing people to Blu-Ray, that'd make a hell of a lot of sense. But even then, the price jump is usually pretty big on new releases. I think The Avengers was the movie I used as an example earlier, so I may as well stick with it. The standard DVD for that seems to go for around $15 to $20 in most stores, while the combo pack usually goes for $25 to $30. That's a reasonably large jump, and one that I doubt most people who want to stick with just the DVD format would want to pay. Especially with the usually crappy quality DVDs in those packs.

I've heard that they intentionally pack barebones copies of the DVD in order to keep the costs down. No idea how accurate that is, but I can confirm from all the combo packs I have that the DVDs in them are almost always inferior to the stand-alone DVDs. The quality is usually lower, and typically they're void of any bonus features.

I don't know if it does hold true about the reason behind barebone DVD copies in combo packs, but it makes a lot more sense to me that they would do something like that, considering how I tend to lean towards the combo packs just to "play it safe" when I tend to bring movies over to someone else's house to watch... But, then again, if its to subtly hint at those that do buy combo packs [with barebone DVD copies in it] to "just get the Blu-Ray version already so you don't have to always get the barebone DVD copy for your DVD player that should be a Blu-Ray player at this point", it doesn't make any sense to still keep a "just DVD" version available that's both cheaper and at a better quality than the DVD in the combo pack...

I mean, shouldn't it be just Blu-Ray versions between $20-25 (depending on if you want a digital copy along with it or not) and combo packs versions between $25-30 (again depending if you want a digital copy to come with it or not)? Still having just a DVD version available completely defeats the purpose of a combo pack... (and I was going to say something about how the combo pack would have the digital copy and the DVD version wouldn't, but even the DVD versions are coming out with digital copies included as well!)
